I really dislike the lonesome superhero trope. These are people who are supposed to make huge sacrifices to protect others... but how could we expect them to keep interest in doing that if they don't have a love interest to ground them with humanity? We'd end up with Doctor Manhattans who end up just saying "Okay, I'm out. Do whatever you want, humanity." So this spiderman movie is my favourite of all of them. It has MJ tell Peter that she isn't just going to let him go.
@phellips10
@phellips10 2 жыл бұрын
He wasn't really depressed. His personal life was falling apart in every aspect and the reason was because he was spider man so he began to question if he should keep being spider man. It all goes back to the uncle Ben line "with great powers comes great responsability" but at that moment he started to question why he should take that responsability onto himself if he couldn't do something as simple as be at certain place at a certain time anymore. But he was still conflited about it and didn't undestand his fellins so that confusion started to apear fisically and he began to lose his powers as why of his mind telling him that maybe he shouldn't be spider man anymore and just live his life

Alfred Molina was actually impressed enough by the puppeteers that he would cut up and talk to them in-between takes. They were behind screens and such, so Molina would talk to the tentacles. He even named them: Harry, Larry, Flo, and Moe.

@wolfkniteX
@wolfkniteX 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, if his strength is anything like in the comics then it's a considerable amount. There was a few years where Doc Ock managed to switch bodies with Peter Parker and left Peter to die in his old, dying body, so Otto was "The Superior Spider-Man" for a while feeling that he could be a better hero than Peter was. It was his time as Spider-Man when he discovered just how strong Peter was when he fought The Scorpion and punched his lower jaw right off. It was only then that Otto realized just how much Peter was pulling his punches every time they fought.

Spider-Man pulls his punches about 99% of the time in order to not kill and maim people. If he wanted to, he could knock Doc Ock's head clean off in a puff of red mist. The scene of him leaving his costume in a dumpster is pulled direclty from a comic panel, in a story called "Spider-Man No More". In the story, he wasn't having "performance issues", but his life as Spider-Man was SERIOUSLY affecting his life as Peter Parker in a bad way, and so he quit for a while. This story also marks the first appearance of the Kingpin, who later became much more associated with Daredevil.

And that is what I feel MCU Spiderman is missing g that’s making it hard (for me, at least) to accept him as Spiderman. MCU Spiderman has everything handed to him and he doesn’t learn responsibility (until…) Every works out for him one way or the other. This Spiderman learns about power and responsibility. He learns that he can’t have everything. If Spiderman wins, Peter Loses; and if Peter wins, Spiderman loses, and when Spiderman loses, people are in danger. There isn’t a win-win here. But MCU Spiderman always finds a win-win and never learns the meaning of sacrifices (until…) So that’s my little rant on the subject. Spiderman 2 is a personal favorite of mine because it nails exactly who Spiderman is suppose to be. I’m not getting anything from MCU Spiderman, other than if you have friends in high places, everything will be handed to you.

I think it's more that she also kissed Spiderman in the rain. And when she kissed Peter in the end of the first movie the kiss felt similar to that. She had her doubts. When she kissed her fiance with his head titled backwards (kind of like the one she did with Spiderman when he was hanging upside down), it reminded her of that doubt, and she wanted to confirm it 100% if peter is spiderman or not. That's why she just randomly tells Peter to kiss him in the cafe. Also the fact that she says that she kind of knew Peter's identity confirms that it was just the doubt she was carrying all this time.

In the comics when doc oc temporarily takes over Spider-Man's body, he discovers this when he one punched scorpion's jaw away. Heck he even pushes his body away so that normal people don't break their arms. He only uses his full strength against people like venom, goblin or other super powered people.

16:00 - Spidey holds back a LOT when he's fighting most villains. There was actually a storyline in the comics a few years back where Doc Ock was dying because of the years of getting beat up. yes its literally performance issues. the first movie with the biological webs were an allegory to puberty when a young man starts producing his own... webs... and the troubles that come with that and like many people already said. yes spiderman is canonically so strong that in the 90s cartoon he was not allowed to throw a single punch during its run cause if he actually punched someone the person would just turn into a red mist. also cause he is so sturdy, not only does he not punch with full power he also rolls with punches thrown at him cause anyone hitting him would break their arm from the impact with him, basically hitting him is the same as hitting brick wall

That's actually interesting. What if the trilogy is actually some kind of message about puberty? The first movie is representative of what happens when you first get hit with it, (Unexpected changes to your body, crazy hormones, etc.) the second movie showcases performance issues/anxiety that makes you unable to perform in high tension moments, and the third movie is about what puberty does to you mentally with things like rebellious/douchey phases and making bad decisions.

One of the times Peters been accused of crimes in the comics JJJ funded his entire defense anonymously (I think anonymously anyway). He's always had a soft spot for Peter but he also has a reputation to uphold. The best was when he fainted right out of his chair when Peter unmasked in Civil War.

An exceptional film. The performances, the writing, the direction, everything just on a whole different level to the Garfield and Holland films and superior to the comics in some respects. That's a really good point George made about Doc Oc taking punches from spiderman because in the comics you find out Peter has been pulling his punches all this time when Doctor Oc switched minds with him and ended up punching scorpions bottom jaw off and he realizes that spiderman could've killed him at any time but chose not to.
@smlshin
@smlshin 2 жыл бұрын
The common explanation is that Spidey holds back his punches. To further this concept, there is a great comic story called Superior Spider-Man. Long story short, Doc Ock and Spidey swapped minds. Doc Ock as Spidet was once fighting a criminal and he paralyzed him with a punch and Otto realized that he now knows Peter always held back whenever he fought him. Otto concludes that Peter is superior over him. All those times he took punches from Peter he held back cause he didn’t want to kill him. It was a profound moment for Otto. He never realized a lot of things about Spidey.

Things in each film people are way too hard on. SM1: Goblin's costume. Yeah it's difficult to make a comic-accurate Green Goblin costume in live action and not look rediculous, so this was really the best option they could reasonsbly go with and keep the dynamic of a guy in a costume who argues with his mask in tact. And while it doesn't necessarily work 100% of the time, it's still an amazing design and Willam Dafoe sells the crap out of it. SM2: Mary Jane. Look, her timing on her decisions isn't the best but it's understandable at least from her perspective and no matter how great a guy John Jameson might be, if she doesn't truly love him they're both better off. And to hear the way a lot of people talk about her when complaining about this I have a sneaking suspicion that they'd be a lot more forgiving if the genders were reversed. SM3: The whole movie. It is compromised by executive meddling in a troubled production, but it still manages to be a solid 8/10 movie in spite of it and is a perfect thematic continuation/conclusion to this story.

MJ deserves a break on this movie. She was trying to move on and Peter, from an outsider's perspective, was being a dick. He was trying to charm her while telling her they can't be together. The entire thing is a mess but you get it because he's Spider-Man and she is in love with Peter, and she tries to move on with her life. Also props to her with the "is not fair for us to be half alive, so let's make this work even if it kills us young". Also, I feel people are way too hard on MJ on SM3, and that I just don't get, that entire movie was about Peter being a dick, even without the new costume. Agree with SM3 being thematically strong and a good thematic conclusion to the trilogy. The first one is about accepting power and responsability, the second about truly making that for yourself, not just because "it's the right thing". And the third one is about using the power responsibly and not letting it go to your head.

I always loved the concept/prototype goblin animatronic mask that was super comic accurate but I agree it would've scared younger audiences, including me in 2002. I chalk up MJ's decisions due to her growing up in a troubled home and being treated badly by her exes, Spider-Man 3 isn't bad, like you said it was mostly studio intervention that pulled it down from what its core story could've been

I'm probably one of the only ones, but I absolutely love the militaristic Goblin armor. Personally not too big a fan of the latex/rubber mask Halloween costume style from the comics (How does a mask even work that well?! He looks as if he was a genuine goblin monster instead of a guy in a mask with how that thing moves) But I like it a bit. I do think it's pretty much impossible to accurately translate it to a live action movie, dude would just look plain goofy, and yeah I've seen the original 2002 prototype mask. The static militaristic mask is probably the best we could've gotten not counting the no-mask hood and goggles from NWH.

Octavius being beaten up by superheroes is a plot point in the comics, which resulted in severe trauma and a few months for his inevitable death. This eventually leads up to writer Dan Slott's magnum opus, Superior Spider-Man, where Octavius swipes minds with Peter and becomes what he thinks, is the superior Spider-Man.

Once upon a time, the reason I thought they decided on organic web shooters was because they were planning ahead for a Man-Spider arc, where the spider mutations continued and Peter turned into a human-spider hybrid. Given Sam Raimi's knack for horror, it seemed only logical.

Still my all-time favorite comic book film. The original script included each individual arm having their own distinct personality and influence over Doc Ock. This subplot was phased out during the filming process and none of it was retained in the theatrical cut other than when Octavius exclaims "you listen to me, now!" at the end when he overpowers the arms with his own will once more. The full body shots with the arms were all GC, but almost all of the close-up shots of the clamps and individual arms were done practically.

Doc Oct is such a badass villain; both the comics and the movie took the time to show his back story. Which gave his character a multi-dimensional depth to it that explores the deep psychology of psychosis and revenge. Evil never thinks its evil, since there is no self-reflection involved. Evil operates from a narcissistic base and all of its decisions and actions are driven by that motivation. We all want to have things go our way, villains will stop at nothing to get their way, no matter how people get tossed in harm's way.

Fun Fact: that train fight sequence was originally storyborded for a film called "Crimewave" which was Raimi's second film after "The Evil Dead" and the first one he made with an actual film crew. because it was his first time with an actual film studeo, he didn't get the budgets, permits, or timescale right and it was a complete disaster and several of it's more ambitious segments were never filmed, incuding the train fight he later re-used in this.

When aunt may is moving out of her house, she explains to peter what a true hero is, and the scene where he embodies that true hero in his very nature, by entering a burning building without any powers to rely on. A true sacrifice that trumps anything he did as spiderman.
