Secretary is a surprisingly brilliant film. She struggles with self-harm, and he kind of guides her into BDSM instead, but in a way that shifts her view of herself from loathing to loving. She develops confidence, as well as the ability to say no to the people she loves, including him, and it’s quite the lovely (very kinky) romance.

Sooo Secretary is a weirdly fascinating love story. There's actually a really beautiful love scene toward the end but you'd kind of need to watch the entire movie to understand the context of the characters' "quirks"and motivations. For example, Leigh (the secretary) is a self h*rmer who recently got out of a treatment facility and needs to find a job so she's desperate and the lawyer (forget his name. Edward I think?) is definitely a dom but forbids her to h*rm herself anymore and helps her channel her need for physical p*in and submission into something safe for her.

I was kind of shocked nobody had really mentioned anything. Leigh's delivery of the line that she had found someone to "play with" was so innocent and sweet, it's another piece that adds context to the strangeness of their dynamic.

I guess that depends on the person. I personally I don't find it spicy but I'm a self-harmer and not a submissive or someone that it's into BDSM. To be honest, I find more apealing the parts where she self harm than the kinky ones. That cutting kit, I want one. I don't have one, because I understand is not a good idea, but I would be lying if said that I don't want one. And that's a very good reason for me not to watch the movie any time soon so I don't get ideas.

7:17 To be fair, that is in character for Jane Eyre. The whole novel, story, and context it was written in is about a young woman dealing with her precarious social standing while dealing internally with her feeling of passion. There is a reason why it was so scandalous when the original novel was published. She had a tough upbringing so she sort of represses it. In the novel because its written as a fictional autobiography, you can see Jane's inner monologue, and its wonderfully passionate and vibrant. I guess it's harder to translate it to film though in the both the novel and film it's intentionally understated as it can sometimes be typical of the Victorian gothic genre. I love this film but maybe this wasn't the best scene to choose. The passion comes from kind of the whole situation and setting as a whole rather than the characters. The soundtrack is fantastic too and adds to the overall ambience. To anyone reading this, thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
