Uma Thurman's character in Pulp Fiction talks about the show she filmed the pilot episode for "Fox Force Five". the ways she described the characters in that show within the movie-verse is almost exactly on point for the ""Snake Squad"" in Kill Bill.

I remembered after watching Vol 2, my knee-jerk reaction was I felt it paled in comparison to Vol 1. However over time, I found myself preferring V2 more as it felt more like your classic Tarantino film. That being said, I think 1 & 2 compliment each other quite well with V1's stylish, over-the-top action with V2's more methodical, dialogue-driven pacing.

Same for me. When I watched them in high school (when they came out) I preferred Vol 1. But as I've gotten older I think Vol 2 is better. I just love how Tarantino can shift the entire tone and genre so that we start with a bloody revenge spree and somehow end up with a poignant love story and emotional family drama and it....works somehow. These films are also a masterclass on how you can establish deep relationships between characters based on very little dialog and screen time together. At points in the films, you get an evocative glimpse at her relationship with these people before they turned on her - the "Trix are for kids" bit in Vol 1. and Elle calling Beatrix "B" as if they're girlfriends at a slumber party in Vol 2 are perfect examples of that. She fights each of them differently and the way they fight and move tells you a lot about their characters. You can tell Beatrix and Vernita used to get high and shoot the shit. You can tell Beatrix had an immense amount of respect for Oren and considered her an actual peer. You can tell she fucking hated Elle. It just does so much work to sell that these are real people who basically used to be co-workers. It feels so much more authentic than half the films now where the characters have all been focused-grouped into being by a committee of producers.

In his book The Kill Bill Diary, David Carradine gives many details about how his part in the movie was developed, and about several ideas and filmed scenes that didn't make into the final cut. Like a complete fighting sequence of him against Michael Jai White, rehearsed for months and fully filmed. And that there aren't two movies, but a single one that had to be either cut in two parts or cut of many more scenes for length when screening.
@maximillianosaben

Nice! In the full 4-hour cut of the movie, as it was intended, the audience wasn't supposed to know that the daughter was still alive unil Beatrix finds it out herself at the end of the movie. Having said that, it's a great cliffhanger to Vol. 1.

I don't totally buy the idea that QT wanted to release a 4hr version. I suspect he perhaps considered the script to be 2hr 30 or so, but once the production started to develop he released he'd have too much material to support an "epic length" for this kind of genre. It would go against all the movie styles he was trying to ape/improve upon.

@@maximillianosaben It’s true he wanted it to be a single movie originally. But after the studio nixed it, he did rewrites to the two individual parts. It wouldn’t have looked like it does now in the original version. And it certainly wouldn’t have changed style completely halfway through.
@nevrogers8198
@nevrogers8198 2 жыл бұрын
@@maximillianosaben I know, but he will have known that as soon as he started development he would have to split it for initial release, or make a bunch of ads for the interval like the Grindhouse flicks (which didn't turn out well as a theatre release strategy). A spaghetti western can be this long (but usually isn't) and some Samurai epics but the martial arts weighting it ultimately leaned towards is a genre rooted in shorter films. He will have understood that from the offset and perhaps had his eye on the "full saga" as a post-release variant.

I appreciate both for what they are, honestly. I think they're meant to convey different things b/c they are supposed to be considered one story, so I like them both for different reasons. I just hope they can work together again, after what happened, so we can get a closing Vol. 3. I mean Nakia has to come back for revenge and given the old martial arts{mainly Shaw Bros.} tropes, Elle isn't dead and had to be her master, lol. I'd love to see Beatrix and Bebe fighting together.

My favorite bit about the final act of the film is the question of who’s the better parent between the two? Beatrix was robbed of her daughter, but Bill gave her everything she could ever want. A big house to grow up in, plenty of luxury and comfort, great education, gourmet meals, etc, but the one thing that justifies Beatrix taking her away from him is that he would be fine with her becoming just as much of a monster as her murderous mother. Beatrix, though a killer, is the better parent for wanting to save her daughter from making the same mistakes as her.

You can't criticize the first film for a "lack of characterization" because these "two" movies were filmed back-to-back and was meant to be released as one long 4-hour film. But the studio wouldn't have it, and forced Tarantino to split it up into two movies. So, "Volume 2" isn't a sequel by any means, it's just the second half of the movie. And my god, it's been two+ months! Completely forgot ya even watched it. Hoped you rewatched "Volume 1" to prep for this.

The name Paula Schultz is a fun callback to the 1968 comedy "The Wicked Dreams of Paula Schultz" which stars Bob Crane and three other actors from the "Hogan's Heroes" TV series. It's set in post-war East Germany and works as a nice coda to the "Hogan's Heroes" TV series. As a child, I started watching this movie mid-way and was confused by the cast. As it was set in post-war Germany and had the same cast as "Hogan's Heroes," I thought I was watching a "Hogan's Heroes" movie or the final episodes of that series. It would be years before I found out what I had actually watched.

Bill is played by the late great David Carradine, who is best known for his role as Kwai Chan Caine in the Kung Fu TV series. He is the son of John Carradine, brother of Robert & Keith. Gordon Liu played both Pai Mei and the General of the Crazy 88. The pimp played the cop in the first chapter. They really had to work hard to make Daryl Hannah look unattractive and sound nasty. I may be wrong but this may be the first time she's played a villain and not the love interest.

The opening of the film was filmed after the fact as a way to bridge Vol 1 and 2 after it was decided they would be split in half. Tarantino had to put something to remind the audience of what happened and a way to start the film.Otherwise it'd just start with no context. I read that there was some screenings of what was called The Whole Bloody Affair which was both films edited back together. I can't recall how it was supposed to be but if it were released as one film they wouldn't just be joined back together. The scenes were re-ordered when it was split in two. There are versions available out there called The Whole Bloody Affair but they just join both parts together and add the colour back to the fight against the Crazy 88 which is worth watching again in colour. It's definitely more intense.

Vol 1 and Vol 2 are two of my favorite films of all time, and man there are so many little easter eggs and bits of trivia that my love for these films grows the more I read about them. There are too many to say in detail, but heres the one I love the most. Vol 1 opens up with the song "Bang Bang", and at the end of Vol. 2 "B.B." (the Bride's daughter, presumably named after Beatrix and Bill) "shoots her mom down" after exclaiming "bang bang" aka "Bang bang my baby shot me down." aka the main lyrics of the song. The name B.B. SOUNDS like "baby" and she's also literally Beatrix's baby. Also, while I dont think it's actually confirmed anywhere, some fans theorize that Bill's last name is "Gunn" which would lend even more importance to B.B.'s name, aka "B.B. Gunn"

Pai Mei represents the past, and tradition. By challenging it, and then submitting to it, and studying under it, one can gain knowledge and abilities. Elle had no respect for tradition (Pai Mei), so she not only missed out on the teachings but lost some of her vision. She then killed the past... But Pai Mei took revenge on Elle, through the techniques handed to Beatrix. Indeed, disdain for the past is a form of blindness. Bill also died to the Pai Mei's techniques, by (as you mentioned) a broken heart. Bill said she broke his heart when she left him... he said he broke his heart when he shot her... so Beatrix took his claims of a broken heart and made them a fatal reality. Since we're talking about the "poetry" of each character's death, even Budd's death fits his failings - his vices (greed) and his lies took the form of the appropriate symbol, the serpent, and it killed him. Nicely done.

Agree with your overall reasoning. I loved 1 on first watch, but hated 2. I like 2 now, it has some real classic moments, but it could really shave off at least 30 mins. The irony is they took the weaknesses of 1 (flashy story, lacking emotional depth) and went too far the other way, making an over-long plod with too much baggage. The first 45 mins bored me shitless, they went out of their way to portray Budd as an out-of-shape has-been but he outsmarts a focused Bride in 2 mins, making her look stupid and sucking all the momentum of the first film. But its better to treat it as one entity and I'm satisfied by the end. I'll probably always prefer 1 because of Lucy Liu, though my fave scene is Karen Kim and the pregnancy test lol

I wish I could see "The Whole Bloody Affair" Tarantino edited both films together. I think he showed it at his theater the New Beverly and it's available on Blu-Ray overseas.

8.8 is a great rating for this one. But believe me, you will think about it and not stop thinking about it and eventually feel like this film has the soul of both films, where film one is rage, revenge. Even Bills brother pausing, then “this is for breaking my brothers heart” you’re over here rooting for Beatrix and now.. wait.. she did what? Hmm what happened? How? And it just leaves you wondering. Then you hear the whole story and understand. Then when she does the deadly move on him, she realizes she can’t take it back and for the first time she doesn’t enjoy killing someone. Now it hurts. And she says “I’m a bad person” that hits me so hard. Its a phenomenal flick. I just heard you say 9.5 for both films together. Thats a worthy rating. Soo fkn good. Thanks for posting. Now I have to pretend thAt my eyes are red from allergies. Haha. 🥺

I can't rate them separentely because I consider them two parts of a single movie. I saw Volume 2 first because I saw it in the video rental place and didn't know it was a two-parter. Even so, I don't think it diminished my enjoyment of them since the whole thing is mostly out of order anyway.

Well, considering this film's release date, I guess it might be time to tell a story about Nikia Greene and Bebe Kiddo...perhaps involving a very vindicative blind teacher.

Completely fine with your ratings. I personally rated them both a perfect 100, but that´s just me. Only critique, I would have for you: You rated Kill Bill Vol. 1 a 8.8 at the end of this video. That´s the cover of Vol. 1! ;-) Vol. 2´s cover is red....

Every reactor always cuts out the Superman speech. My favorite conversation in the film, but I guess it doesn't match the editing pace.

Hey Shaun! I loved them both also. Only enough I saw 2 before 1. Maybe that's why it's my favorite. I agree 9.5. Awesome movie. You should check out Quentin's grindhouse double feature. Thanks for the reaction! Love watching you and Tom

I always wondered why Tarantino had Beatrix Kiddo buried alive in Kill Bill then like a year later when Tarantino directed the double episode season finale of CSI he did the same gag and buried one of the characters in that show alive too. It was a great double episode, don't get me wrong, just seems like a strange choice to do something he just did. Especially when he seems to go out of his way to film in a different genre each new project.

This is probably my favorite and my 4th favorite Tarantino movie simultaneously. If viewed as 2 parts of hte same movie, Kill Bill is my fav Tarantino... if viewed as 2 separate movies, it's Kill Bill volume 1, Inglorious Basterds, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill volume 2 (all four of which are 9/10 cause I don't do decimals in my ratings)... and I wonder if a complete Kill Bill with the Crazy 88 fight in full color would reach a 10 or not. I'd have to see a version like that. But it would be pretty damn close for sure.
