I stopped watching CinemaSins when they started doing things like dinging movies for being confusing when the guys were just purposely leaving out information the movies presented. Like "What in the world is going on? How did they get to that location all of a sudden?" when literally the very previous scene in the movie would be the characters traveling to said location. They're either incredibly dumb or disingenuous, neither of which appeals to me.

I don't know what's so surprising... As far as I'm concerned, Cinemasins are just plain crude humor while Cinemawins really sounds like he's cocksucking these creators sometimes. Heck I might even make the argument that Cinemasins are just brainless jokes, insulting it may be, it's still just a stupid trashing compared to Cinemawins who *maybe* really does just honestly praising these movies while ignoring it's flaws or bad points (sure you can set those things aside if you don't care, but it sure make you sounds like corporate shill). I doesn't hate either ones, but both are decent at best.

It's dumb to say that he "ignores" the movie's flaws when the entire concept of the channel is to list the positive aspects of often-underappreciated movies. As the channel matured he focused less on maligned movies and more on popular content, but the premise of the channel continues to be about concentrating on the good. And even then he still lists the occasional flaw.
@shira_yone
@shira_yone 6 жыл бұрын
1 2 well fine, I'm just saying how much of a shill that made them sounds and that's it. On the other hand, Cinemasins are based on the entire concept of nitpicking any aspect of a movie as much as possible but it didn't stopped them from removing a sin everytime a movie nailed something so well. That's where I'll go back to my initial stance, Cinemasins are Jackasses and Cinemawins can really *really* sounds like blind fangirling. Both are decent, neither is better than the other.

I agree with most of this. I remember when Cinema Sins actually made short and concise videos in which they actually pointed out badly used Cliches and continuity errors, bad shots + the running jokes of logos, storm trooper aim and the Prometheus school of running away from things which add a little bit of humor. It poked a bit of fun at films but never implied the film was bad because of it. I think the channel could be made better if the "sins section" of the videos were 5 minutes or so like they used to be, then maybe they could do a very short overall review (like 2 mins) where they actually credit the film fairly and at the end have the 3(ish) minutes of mashups that they do now. this would improve the quality of the sins, prevent damage to the artists who did a good job, and still let them just about hit the 10 minute mark for the revenue. Also there is a channel called Cinema Wins which is really enjoyable and also gets into a bit of philosophy and meaning behind the films as well as pointing out cool moments. Another channel that pokes fun at films in a good way is Editing is Everything. - just a few cool movie channels that I hadn't heard of until recently.

i dont really consider cinemasins much of a "criticism" channel. they don't really do much critique with their videos as much as they make jokes about small things that they were personally annoyed with. if people are watching these videos and taking them as legitimate media criticism then that's probably an issue and shouldnt be too hard to solve. personal insults aimed at individuals who worked on the movies is in poor taste and offhand "bashing" without point or meaning isnt very worthwhile in any context though.

I kinda stopped taking CinemaSins seriously as a comedy channel, when they pointed out the unlikely timing of events in Thor Ragnarok as sins, when clearly they're intentionally set up jokes because the movie is a comedy. I think it was when Thor was chatting with the skeleton and its jaw drops off or something, they referred to that unlikely event as a sin and I was like "c'mon! So gag humor is a sin now?" I mean, I thought it was funny and it immediately clued me in to the type of movie I was going to be watching, and Thor's hilarious monologue with that skeleton, and the dumb gag of its jaw falling off, simply CAN'T be considered bad writing because it elicited exactly the effect that was intended - it tickled my funny bone, gave me a new perspective on the character of Thor and who he was going to be, tone-wise, in the movie. Most importantly, that gag told me immediately that this movie, unlike the previous Thor movies, would NOT be taking itself seriously at all - which is something that Ragnarok needed to establish IMMEDIATELY in order for the movie to work. The more I think about it actually, the more that silly cartoonish gag starts to seem like a stroke of writing genius xD And the CinemaSins review continues to point out further obvious comedic moments and gags as sins, which made me roll my eyes because how the hell is a supposed comedy channel, taking shots at a comedy movie from a literal perspective, ever supposed to hit home? CinemaSin's best content comes from valid criticisms that surprise you because you never thought of them and you agree, or because you already noticed the problem and you're stoked to see they did too. It does NOT come from nonsensically critiquing for the sake of critiquing.

Totally agree. Heard SO many people talking shit about a movie and the literal only thing they could bring up was "the cinema sins video", people that would probably have a totally different opinion otherwise. They point out some plot-holes in funny ways but A LOT of the sins are pretty much bullshit, just jokes that dont even adress a flaw but still add to the sin counter, or insults. I mean, I love watching some of their videos but "satire" does not really apply for some of the things they say. Even if it might not be their intention; it teaches people to nitpick movies rather than find constructive critizism

I'm sure they know quite a bit about movies, but literally all they say is "this dialogue is shit" or "this plot is shit" rather than give any form of improvements at all. I know that it's not their intention to give improvements, they just want to do "comedy" basically, but none of what they say justifies insulting individual people working on those movies that much. It could be a somewhat enjoyable format if they weren't as toxic as they currently are, but my biggest issue is how many people, who don't know much about film take it literally and become these annoying nitpickers as well

Real talk anybody watching cinemasins looking for a honest criticism about the quality of a movie just stop. Channel always leaned comedy nitpicks over critical flaws. Longer the videos met they would include more comedy. Cinemasins should not dictate if you watch a movie or not.

If I watch a CinemaSins video for a movie I haven't seen, it is because I have no intention of seeing it anyway. I don't always agree with them. For instance, I think they were unnecessarily harsh with Shrek, a movie aimed at kids. However, I still enjoyed the video because it was entertaining and it gave me an interesting viewpoint about the movie. Watching CinemaSins these days is like watching a review of the movie. It's just their opinions, and that's all. If the name of the videos were changed to "Things I Didn't Like About ____", hardly anyone would be complaining. But it's called "Everything Wrong With ____", so people think the channel is trying to tell audiences what to think about the movie...

And it's called Everything Wrong With because that spells EWW. It's another joke. And I totally agree with you, I often watch CS videos of movies I'm sure are detestable (Kong Skull Island is a good example, the King Kong remake by Del Toro was already bad enough) and will never watch. But I also watch their videos for movies I loved (The VVitch is a good example) and I still laughed a lot and loved their video. Directors who get offended/feel threatened by them are snow flake imbeciles, as demonstrated vastly by the movies they make (I downloaded and watched Skull Island, then deleted it instantly, it's so terrible, the characters are so shallow and chicle, it's on Transformers level of bad).

I was able to find some fun moments in kong skull island but felt sorry to watch talented actors given try to bring their mundane characters to life. Outside the kong scenes the movie fucking flawed. Cinemasins states before the video starts no movie is perfect. A person favorite film should be able to handle a being nitpicked.
@RYFAMO
@RYFAMO 6 жыл бұрын
+Alexandre Martins I don't think that offended director are "snow flake imbeciles". They are just witnessing, how months of their work is made seem bad in fornt of a large audience. I do understand their complaint, although criticism (good and bad) is part of the film industry. CinemaSins is always pointing out, what's bad in their eyes. But sometimes we forget, that every movie with it's plot, characters developments and actors caters a different audience. Most of these movies are just not worthy to watch (for me - in my opinion); you could even call them trash, but that doesn't mean they don't make money and that there are no people enjoying this kind of movie experience - even if it is forgettable. I still enjoy CinemaSins and their content. And I guess a part of their audience sees most flaws in some of their criticism or line of argument as I do as well as appreciates the jokes and where their "sins" are completely right. Still the film industry puts a lot of money and effort into making these movies. So let them complain.

Thank you for genuinely making not only a fair case against Cinemasins but also a respectful one. That seems like something people keep misunderstanding when offering criticism to a content creator. The issue with that is that a lot of viewers are catching onto how low quality the videos are and how much of its critique is not earned. A lot of viewers want to be more than just entertained. It has gotten to the point where some of their fans actually believe the "Did we watch this movie" aspect is the joke, that their videos are supposed to be so ill informed that you are meant to laugh AT Cinemasins (As in the problem is so bad, people think it is intentional)

The problem is, at least for me and seemingly a lot of other people as well, it fundamentally doesn't even work as humor. Humor has to make a certain kind of sense, it has to be relatable; for a channel like CinemaSins, the humor needs to be paired with a fair criticism -- which was the case for their earlier videos. Only then can I have that appropriate reaction of "Haha, yeah, they really did mess that up." Now they're deliberately making these excruciatingly construed pseudo-criticisms in order to *seem* clever and increase run-time. It's not fair criticism, it's not funny, it's outright obnoxious.

Occasionally, Cinema Sins' droll and smug banter accidentally grazes across an actual flaw, but most of the time, the videos are inept, unfunny, and disastrously incorrect. Almost every "sin" is no sin at all, and quite often is completely made up or wrong. When such confidence is wielded like a weapon, you better be able to back it up. And they can't. Their subscriber base is full of people in love with hatred and willful stupidity.

Sin 1 - Your comment came across droll and smug, almost grazing the actual flaw of CinemaSins. Ultimately just inept and disastrously incorrect. Sin 2 - Unless you have a list of "almost every sin" and reasoning to why it's incorrect, completely made up or wrong, you better sheath that confidence. Or at least back it up. And you can't. Sin 3 - To group an entire subscriber base as people in love with hatred and willful stupidity based on a joke channel is almost like saying the entirety of your comment proved to me you are pretentious, only muster surface-level comments (the fact that what you said can be boiled down to "Cin Sins is boring. CinemaSins USED to be deliberately innocent and ironic. The "flaws" weren't meant to be flaws, but deliberate nitpicks that you can laugh about. At some point the tide turned though - probably the Star Wars prequel videos - and it became less about laughs and more about bandwagon hatred, perceived logic flaws and recycling running gags once too often. CinemaWins was set up as a kind of parody of CinemaSins, but I find that it's outgrown its insipiration by a fair margin (again, with the exception of CW's very poor Star Wars-bashing videos).

I personally like the videos that are longer because it reminds me of mystery science theatre. Not all the jokes are quality but it's more true to their brand of knit picking stupid details. Cinemasins is created for those who have ALREADY seen and maybe enjoyed the movie already. Like, seriously. And after every movie EVERYONE critiques it. EVERYONE! We pick all the things right and wrong with it. How it's believable or not. And usually talk with friends about. And some friends say more than the other. Some are funnier. And that's what cinemasins is about. Bitching about PEOPLE CHOOSING to watch comedy aimed critiques about a movie that should've been experienced first.....actually first....is dumb. Bitch to people. Not against Cinemasins. They pretty much let you know it contains spoilers. Know why? Most people, normal people, don't want to hear the full story and one sided opinions of a movie before they see it. They're basically saying, "🤔 Do you guys want to hear a funny, one-sided, nitpicking, opinionated critique on a movie BEFORE you watch it? Cause this contains all that and spoilers. I'm not responsible for your enjoyment. I just want to be funny." And whomever chooses the answer, "yes", Is the dumb one

i actually disagree on the subject of cinemasins saying that its satire as, other people have noted, many of the 'nitpicks' also show up in their serious before and after videos. which means that at least half of their 'eww' videos are serious. that makes it hard to tell if its serious or not : \\ also, to everyone who says that doesn't matter, IT DOES. people who see it as serious will just not watch the movie, meaning that the producers will lose viewers for the movie, which affects their ability to KEEP making movies. and then people who don't take it seriously (and are fans) get overly defensive when people criticize cinemasins. and that's not even taking into account that they're showing a great amount of the movie IN their videos, which means that people might just not watch it because they saw the footage in the video!!

Filmento Man, I am SO glad I didn’t see their Ghost in the Shell video when that first came out. What you’ve shown there was exactly what I feared their video to be: just them continuously and oh so harshly trash the film by saying all the annoying stuff a lot of other people have been whining and complains about instead of actually finishing something in the film that’s actually worth being counted as a “Sin.” I mean, that goes far from them just nitpicking anything, like what they’ve been doing recently. This was just pathetic. Their video I mean, not yours. And I’m glad that there are more and more people starting to seeing past the BS they’ve been spewing as of late, including the director of Kong: Skull Island himself.

But the GinS movie was terrible! And no, I'm not comparing it to the anime, it was just terrible as a completely standalone movie. Most things in it make no sense, starting with the Evil Corporation schlock, which was silly since Robocop (the first one), but we forgave it because it was the 80s. The characters are paper-thin, the plot is a ridiculous vengeance-turned-justice story, the scenes that reference to the anime are out of joint because they're only there to show they're copying the anime and not to be an organic part of the whole, the excessive CGI all over the city is only there to stress the movie's budget... And Scarlet Johansen is a terrible, terrible actress who should only play an emotionless Terminator.

Your average moviegoer doesnt care about Cinema Sins (or even for that matter who the director is), they see a trailer they like or hear that it's good from a friend and go. The people that watch CInema Sins have already made their mind up on a movie long before a video comes out 2-3 months later. You can criticize them for what you view is lazy content but don't make them out to be something they're not. Also really, we're going to act like Rupert Sanders is some sort of victim here. Asshole cheated on his wife with a younger employee (that's the relationship, he was her boss) and should be immune to attacks from it?

I hadn't watched CS in some time, and was wondering why I started seeing videos giving flak to a channel that always seemed to just be goofy. Your video definitely beats watching 3 hours of shaun rant about it. It is sad their quality declined, when in the beginning they enabled to look at movies with a more critical eye but these days their videos are riddled with weird invalid finger pointing.

Excellent vid, points made were very valid, the only issue I had was when you brought up reviews. I've watched thousands of films over my years and never once left a review, just because a review is left doesn't really mean much. I've watched films with super bad reviews but personally found it entertaining. Considering the amount of people that have watched a film, especially a hollywood (or similar well known studio) then check reviews clearly not a lot of people actualy left one. I've been binging on this channel so much recently and all your vids are entertaining and make you think about the films you're talking about a lot more than just the "surface" ie watching. Keep em coming 😎👍🏽

Brad Smith because Cinemawins clearly inserts lot more effort for his videos. He analysis themes, hidden meaning, directing, character development and so on. Cinemasins is complete idiot who can't take criticism, who never admits he is wrong, and has terrible points in his reviews. His fans love to defend him by stating that "he is not meant to be taken seriously". I believed his bullshit for a while, until I watched his real reviews that he posts on his other channels and uses the same freaking points. Dude is funny? Yeah. But is he good critic? Not even close.

I remember all the times cinemasins would give a movie a sin for an actress not giving Jeromy a lap-dance in every scene she was in. It's quite sexist, objectifying and unnecessary. As much as a male chauvinist I may be, it seemed a bit too vulgar and rude for me.

Bobo Boy, there's a difference between begging the audience and giving a friendly reminder. You're kind of pathetic as a youtube channel if you don't say at the end, "don't forget to like, subscribe, and share." It's also not even remotely close to begging.

+George Daugherty true. Saying that they beg is kinda harsh. Plus, when I don't subscribe and I want to watch another one of their vids, it's kinda hard to remember what was the name of the channel. I subscribe more for myself than anything else. And if I want to support the channel more, I turn the notification bell on. It's no big deal really.

To be fair, if you're going to be a director, writer, whatever, in any area of literature or art, you should have thicker skin instead of getting pissed off that some person on the internet is talking shit about you or your piece of work. Sure you spent a ton of time on that piece of work, but that doesn't mean you're immune to trash talk or criticism.

They aren't immune to criticism but they shouldn't have to ignore incorrect or unjunjustified trash talk, which is most of cinemasins content these days. Why do cinemasins get a free pass but filmmakers can't point out when they're incorrect and spreading mis information that can harm the sales of their movies? I miss the days when cinemasins was actual critisism.

Personally, I never watch a Cinemasins review of a film I've not seen. There would be no point. There ARE critics (eg Mark Kermode) whose opinions I listen to before deciding whether to see a film or not - but no-one in the industry lambasts newspaper or radio critics, even though their impact on a film's success is far greater. I DO eagerly check out Cinemasins for films I've already seen, however. Example - over Christmas I watched Kick-Ass for the first time. As a film, it had style wit and panache; and I was thoroughly entertained. Then I checked back and was delighted to find that Cinemasins had covered it - and was entertained once again by their amusing critique - not least because it was clear they loved the film as well. This is an important point. Cinemasins doesn't hate every film. Bad films (eg The Great Wall - and I still want my money back, not to mention three hours of my life) get torn to shreds, though not always as badly as they deserve. Good films get treated affectionately. A recent example of this is their review of Paddington, which no fan of the film could possibly object to, and most would find very funny. Or take their review of Se7en, in which they break off to lambast themselves for "criticising a masterpiece." Yes, their style has changed over the years - it's improved. Their writing is sharper and funnier, and their delivery much better. As for the money they make - more power to them.

I agree with everything you just said, BUT it does feel that recently they do like to ignore plot points, dialogue etc for some reason. It feels like laziness, because it's still the same nitpicky stuff it's just not based on what the movie previously clearly stated. Yes, there's still genuine jokes. There's also some videos, where they flat out hate the movie and it's really obvious. People like to generalize though, so now everyone is divided into 2 camps - hate or love. Meanwhile I think it's just a mixed bag.

Cinemasins is just a pool of negativity. They demolish a well crafted or poorly crafted movie, making you either feel guilty or stupid for liking it or feel angry at them. I like Cinemawins due to how much the guy puts positive energy into the movie. He points out the good parts, complements the writing, actually teaches me about cinematography, writing, lighting, and special effects. It allows me to gain a new appreciation for movies I love and at least respect movies I don’t. I get that positive, feel good content isn’t the only thing we should consume, but Cinemasins has just become a pool of hate trashing a popular movie for clicks. There’s no respect for their own creation anymore.

I've listened to their podcast channel and they actually have a genuine love for movies and the art of film making, really the whole Cinema Sin's counter is more a play on the people who love to nitpick the little things. I get the sense of humor they are going for and while I can admit that sometimes it can get overlong like they should really go back to videos being ten min at the most I can still see where a lot of what they are saying is coming from, we've all had these thoughts while watching a movie at some point in time. They just decided to put it into video form.

dannytheman1313 honestly you bring up a very good point here... I can remember countless times especially as a child first getting into watching movies when I’d come across a scene that just didn’t sit right in my mind. over the years I’m pretty sure all of us just decide to glance over those scenes rather than think about it but CinemaSins definitely does do a good job in that matter with pointing out those questionable moments that didn’t feel right.

I'm sick of people calling them nitpicks when 75% of the time they aren't even nitpicks and they literally have stooped to manipulatively editing movies to fit a joke. Go watch their Mad Max: Fury Road video where they "sin" them for making Tom Hardy inaudible in the opening narration. This isn't even true, he is perfectly audible during that narration, but watching the CS video he sounds inaudible. This is because they literally edited the audio of the opening lines to make it sound worse so they could ham fist in a lame Dark Knight Rises Bane reference. They do this all the time and the only reason it's done is so they can pad the length of the videos to fit the KZbin algorithm they swear by.

Oh. oh no... like the fact she thought of that as "a review" shocked me.
