As one of those people who thinks the Michael Myers story was wrapped up at the end of the original Halloween II and everything beyond that is fan-fic, it kind of IS all about Laurie: she's the one who Michael is single-mindedly stalking throughout those two films; everyone else either got in his way or was a bit of warm-up practice.

I can never get over how when Michael gets stabbed in the eye with a coathanger in the first film, he grunts and is clearly in pain. Yet here, later that same night, he takes a bullet through each eye (and effectively two into his brain) and seems just inconvenienced by not being able to see. Two completely different thoughts that key into Mikey getting shot and the damage inflicted on him between the two films. Carpenter had his arm twisted into being involved with this film by the original producers, and he didn't want to leave himself open to being dragged back again. So, he wanted to completely destroy Michael at the end of this film, down to him being burnt to a crisp and blind. Skipping past H3, there was a thought that Michael could still be alive, but a blind, charred husk waiting to escape from the hospital at the beginning of H4. In the early going, the "evil" was driving Michael to continue to function despite the 13 bullet wounds we know of, the lack of eyes, etc. Instead, the fourth part just pretty much ignores everything we see at the end of H2.

I can’t wait for the Michael-verse with all these different Halloween timelines.
@Lightshade3933 жыл бұрын
I know, there's so many freaking timelines. Time to put my nerd hat on for anyone wondering about them. Timeline one: Halloween (1977) as a standalone film. Timeline two: Halloween and Halloween II (1981) as a duology. Timeline three: Halloween, Halloween II, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, and Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (which has both a theatrical and director's cut), which some fans refer to as the "Thorn timeline" because of the emphasis on mysticism and druids and crap. The second portion focuses on Jamie Lloyd, Laurie's daughter, being stalked by her uncle until he finally kills her in 6, which is a serious bummer. This is also the timeline that features Sam Loomis the most and personally I think the series lost something special when Donald Pleasance sadly passed away shortly after 5 finished filming, which somewhat accounts for the two different cuts of 5 when they needed to do some reshoots and reedit. Timeline four: Halloween, Halloween II, and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. The timeline where Laurie comes back and which ignores 4, 5, 6, negating the character of Jamie Lloyd, Laurie's daughter, and bringing Michael's total kill count waaaay back down. There is also a nebulous Timeline "four point five" where there was going to be a scene in H2- which canonized 4, 5, and 6 but this was deleted during the script portion, ostensibly to focus on Laurie, but also probably because the weird leap of logic that Laurie would fake her death and *abandon her daughter* to be thrown to the wolves in case her brother ever came back while still having a son she apparently decided to raise and focus on made her character seem VERY unsympathetic. Timeline five: Halloween, Halloween II, Halloween H20, Halloween: Resurrection. The timeline that definitively ends Laurie's character arc in this particular timeline as Michael finally kills her and seemingly retires until they decide to film a reality show in his old home. Yeah, there's a reason Resurrection killed the franchise for a while. Timeline six: Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009). The Rob Zombie timeline where he did his own spin on the story. A lot of fans have mixed feelings about these films given how different the tone and style is for them. Timeline seven: Halloween (1977), Halloween (2018), and the upcoming films Halloween Kills, and the supposed "last film" of the franchise (until they need to make more money, of course), Halloween Ends. The timeline where Laurie becomes a survivalist nut and Michael Myers is still treated as the root of all evil despite only having a one-night killing spree forty years before the next one occurs. CinemaSins has pointed out this timeline MIGHT have made slightly more sense if they kept Halloween II in continuity to explain Michael and Laurie's connection as well as make him seem more fearsome and this great mythical killer everyone keeps talking about but I digress. PHEW! I think the Halloween series has more verses right now than the MCU!
@MariaTex33 жыл бұрын
My favorite thing about this movie is how Michael does not seem to understand how to operate doors. He doesn't kick them open or use the handles, he just walks forward and they break around him or are forced open by him just walking through them as though they don't exist.

It wasn't about Friday the 13th, but about the slasher craze in general. People forget that the first Ft13 had almost no gore in it, and the second barely had any more. It was really more about competing with films like The Evil Dead, The Prowler, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning, Nightmare, Maniac, Madman, etc. Most of those movies have been forgotten (except Evil Dead, obviously) by all but horror nuts, but they were huge at the time.

To your comment at the end, yeah Halloween 3 is weird until you look at it from the perspective of what the studio was trying to do: they were trying to make a Halloween horror anthology series. It wasn't gonna be centered around Michael Myers, that was just going to be the first 2 films, hence why at the end of Halloween 2 Michael was supposed to be legitimately dead. They were going to keep making different horror movies titled Halloween but they'd involve different characters and killers and whatnot, but after Halloween 3 got such a mixed reaction, they decided to go back to Michael.
@SymbioticDivisions3 жыл бұрын
This is almost right, except that it was Carpenter that wanted the anthology approach for the films, not the studio. Matter of fact, for the second Halloween Carpenter wanted to go with the theme of the urban legend about "razorblades in the candy" story, which is why we see that one kid going to hospital after he just ate some candy that cut his mouth up. The studio and producers interfered and wanted a continuation of the Myers story, so Carpenter wrote it with the ending that Michael would burn to death in hopes that it would end the Myers story. Then Halloween III came out, was poorly promoted and no one was explained to that the Myers story was supposed to be done....and well, the rest is history.
@amityislandchum3 жыл бұрын
Yeah basically, Carpenter never wanted a sequel to the Michael Myers story. But it made so much money, the studio forced him to write a sequel. He wrote the script in one weekend and definitively killed off Michael and Loomis so he could get to his anthology idea. Eventually, we got Creepshow and Trick 'r Treat and The Twilight Zone movie and all those other horror anthology movies. Nothing that really matched what Carpenter was going for, but that's probably for the better.
@JoelKellenProductions3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I heard about that. What they should've done was make Halloween and Halloween II just a three hour long movie. Then Season Of The Witch would've been Halloween 2. If that happened, I'm pretty sure everyone would've been fine with the anthology.

See, I wouldn't describe Laurie in the '78 original as tough as nails. Resourceful in her fight to survive (despite being terrified), yes, but she's not that out of the ordinary when we meet her and her friends, and that was her appeal. It's only when JLC returns to the franchise playing a traumatized adult that she becomes a fierce badass. I have some fondness for Halloween II while acknowledging that its script is a few drafts short of being ready for the cameras. But then, I also have fun with its ridiculousness, like the deputy saying, "He came out of nowhere. I couldn't stop." So, was the deputy's original plan to plow into that van at a high speed WITHOUT killing a pedestrian? Why was he driving that fast in the first place, considering what he was there to do? It's not as though Leigh's daughter was going to get more dead.

Later in the film, after the guy in the fake Michael mask was rammed by the cop car and burned up, some other YOUNG kids reported that their friend Ben Tramer was missing, and that he was wearing a 'dumb mask'. Loomis realizes that it was probably the Ben kid that burned up, and not Michael. HOWEVER - earlier, after Laurie is begging Annie to call Ben Tramer back and tell him that she (Laurie) did not ask him to the dance, Annie says that she can't call him, that he went drinking with Mike Godfrey, and wouldn't be back until late, and that Laurie would have to call him herself, tomorrow. If Ben is the typical teenager out running around drinking and getting high, like Linda & Bob, Annie (and probably Paul, who has no clue how lucky he is), there is no way he is then going to be trick or treating in a costume/mask with little kids AFTER going out drinking with Mike Godfrey (again, another lucky guy). Just my 2 cents.

@@amityislandchum I can tell you if you want but I make long posts. The problem with Halloween II is that in the 3 years it took to come out, two Friday the 13th and hundreds of slashers came out. Right away they knew they had to amp up the body count and the gore. That ruined it, thinking it could just get by on doubling the body count, drowning ppl in scalding water, draining their blood on the floor. Could you really see the stalker Michael, who strangled and just stabbed doing that? That made it boring bc otherwise all they did is have boring ppl having boring conversations in a quiet, boring hospital. Laurie spent most of the movie being boring while Loomis ran around screaming the whole time. It was also the worst Michael and it introduced the brother sister subplot. It was supposed to follow the masterpiece OG Halloween as its sequel, but they knew casual fans wanted gore. It wanted to compete with all those other movies instead of Halloween - it succeeded.

And of course Dick Warlock makes the film; whereas Nick Castle played The Shape like an unsettling maniac, Warlock’s interpretation is demonically deranged. I fucking love this movie.

It’s because this remake series parallels the original movies. Look at the remake from 2018. It’s basically the same plot as the original except they flipped it to where Laurie was the one who copied Michael’s moves and they decided to say she’s NOT related to Michael which I think is stupid. It makes sense to make them related since he kept going after her. Anyways, that’s basically what it is and this sequel to the 2018 version is basically the same plot as the second Halloween movie. What they should have done was completely revamp the remakes to where they could tie in her plot(should have still made her related to Michael) but not rehash the original storyline. They should have been original. So in other words, these are just remakes of the originals with the same storyline but modern. It did annoy me because I wanted to see something fresh and not a remake of the original since that was what the 2018 version was toted as. I might as well have not wasted money and just stuck to watching the original since that’s pretty much what I watched with the 2018 remake.

The alternative ending was that paramedic Jimmy @17:18 did not actually die from his injuries with Laurie emotionally saying "We made it..." twice before they are driven away. I think that should have been the actual ending as it was far more canon.

I find it very difficult to believe Laurie Strode had 20 years of living in fear and when Michael comes back...she has a snub revolver.. which already was proven to not kill Michael in the first two movies. Not a shotgun, not a big bore, not anything bigger...
@CBrown3 жыл бұрын
@@VorpalDerringer Eh. I think someone saw what they did with Sarah Connor and said "yeah let's just do that with Laurie". Which was dumb. I'm sorry but she never came off to me as some strong heroine, just a girl who survived. If you want be to believe it's because of the PTSD then I counter with high doubt she'd have stayed anywhere near that town, and raised a family, if she thought the whole time Michael would one day come back.
