Mostly we wanted to continue celebrating the release of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie coming up, but we also thought we'd go ahead and knock out another one of those animated movies you guys don't think we do enough of. The result? Everything Wrong With TMNT, the 2007 animated ninja turtles film. It's pretty much as sinful as the live-action ones.

for anyone wondering why this absolute gem of a movie never got a sequel: imagi, the studio that animated this, also did astroboy (2009). it was such a failure in the box office that they pretty much had to close everything to save themselves from losing even more money. kinda sucks seeing as how the animation team and the staff overall really knew the material they had and honored it. they could've made a marvel sized killing out of these movies if astroboy didn't cause them to close their doors. imagi definitely seemed to respect tmnt's roots and the following films after this could have been hella good

I actually didn't mind this movie when it came out since it was based on the 2003 series which is what I grew up with. From what I understand, it was closer to the original comics than the old series. It was also more violent, with Baxter losing more body parts as the series progressed and some incidental villains actually died. Also, Bishop: better expensive-suit villain than Smith from Matrix.

Raph is in red. Seriously. Red is a design/marketer's dream color. Its a color of passion, anger and fury, aggression, etc. So its easy to assign those traits to a character with visual cues like that. Leo and Donnie's personalities can be completely interchangeable based on whatever incarnation of turtles is watched. Michelangelo is kinda trademarked for being a big kid. Raph is the Wolverine of the brothers for no other reason than he is in red.

Another thing I noticed. When they mention the final monster. It was believed that the little gremlin thing in the restaurant was the final monster right after the stone general said it should not be found, but then Casey and April are being chased by another monster during the finale. Not only that, but the little gremlin was unexplainably captured somehow. I don't remember seeing anyone catching that thing. Especially when it was thought to be the 13th monster.

Ehh, the plot is typical of Hollywood today, but at least it wasn't "This is the story of how the Turtles became the Turtles" and "Let's fight Shredder one more time." The movie took a real chance with some unknown monsters to fight, and in that respect, was far closer to the original comic than any movie so far. Oh, and part of the mythos is that April is being taught martial arts by the Turtles. Hence, she knows how to fight, which makes sense given the sheer amount of trouble she gets into. They even allude to it in the movie, with her practicing with a Bokken. Not a masterpiece, but a fun movie nonetheless, and a decent Turtles movie.

You know what I hate the most about this movie? The 2003 cartoon - in season 4 I believe but I haven't watched it in a while - set up the Leo goes of by himself for training story line a lot better. He'd failed his family and was falling apart, to the point that he almost kills Splinter. And he doesn't come back until his family is in danger and he was welcomed. This move had a perfect model to go off of and managed to completely f it up by doing the exact opposite.

Never understood Leo's problem with the Nightwatcher. A batman-like guy who doesn't seem to be hurting anyone more than we ever did is probably bad, but a psychopath who's oiginal plan was to bludgeon criminals to death with sports equipment is totally fine. Also, the only reason they trusted Casey in the first place was because Raph liked him, but now this other vigilante that Raphael want them to trust shows up, and they all hate him. There's no difference.

The rooftop fight between Raph and Leo is .THE. reason TMNT fans need to watch this movie! The animation is fantastic. It's so well choreographed, and the tension is amazing. It's the first time (on film) the dichotomy between Raph and Leo was truly depicted and the hurt it created between them.

I used to love TMNT and then I kind of stopped, but then I watched this movie and I KNOW it's bad, but after I watched it I started getting back into the series/franchise again.
