In part 2 of our... takedown? of Twilight, we investigate: Is Edward a pedophile? Or merely an abusive, controlling, manipulative stalker? In case you couldn't tell, we don't much like this guy.
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker, and unlicensed filmmaker Alan Seawright dig in to the 2007 megablockbuster TWILIGHT to figure out whether you should emulate Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, move to Forks, Washington, or just buy a steel drum full of body glitter. Also, what to do when someone who is 86 years older than you sneaks into your room to watch you sleep. (hint: don't fall in love with them.)

Hi everybody. Several of you have pointed out insensitivity on our parts calling Bella "a moron" and "an idiot," suggesting that these insults could be taken as our views towards anyone in an abusive relationship. We apologize. Our frustration is with the writing and the character. Real-life victims of abuse and neglect are NOT idiots or morons. Very intelligent, capable people are manipulated, hurt, controlled, and used every day. We'll try to be more mindful of what we say. Please keep in mind that Twilight brings out the worst in us.

I haven't had the chance to read all the comments but what I think you guys are missing is the author. Stephanie Meyers the author of all the twilight books and the host is a Mormon. if anyone bothered to check into the goings-on and the teachings of the Mormon faith you would find that the way Edward is towards Bella is exactly the way that most Mormon men are towards there forever wives. I am not defending Stephanie Meyers in any way shape or form nor am I applauding this series of books... Mormonism is a very deeply rooted faith and children of Mormons are taught from a very early age that the men have all the say so, they go with their women shopping they hang back and keep an eye open make sure no one follows or stalks or does anything derogatory or untoward to their female family members. and yes it does seem like he's either a pedophile taking into account his actual age and or he is a stalker a very controlling one and yeah that is exactly how most Mormon men act towards their women be it their mother their sister their aunts their grandmothers... the men of the Mormon faith will basically follow and be there to help out or to most onlookers it looks like they are very controlling and they are compared to what the rest of us grew up with faith wise in our Lutheran or Baptist or Catholic churches the Mormon faith is very very alien to the rest of us but keep that in mind that's why it was written that way and that's why Edward comes off in that light because Stephanie Meyers is Mormon.

@@lmlafromboys it may interest you to know that Alan and I are both Latter-day Saint, and we would argue with pretty much all of this. We certainly don't follow our respective wives shopping (only got one each, contrary to popular belief), nor do we have all the say so (quite the opposite). Our wives are strong, independent, no-nonsense career women who can take care of themselves. My father honored my mother, deferred to her, and treated her as his equal. Which, by the way, is what we learn at church. So much of what I learned about respecting women came from observing my parents marriage and that of my grandparents. It's a reason we oppose Twilight so much. It's our culture reflected in a funhouse mirror. We certainly take issue with certain aspects of our culture and history (we're both very LGBT-supportive, for instance), but what you're describing is not our lifelong experience.

I think the whole relationship is built upon the fact that Bella's life was so miserable and boring that she was willing to literally flirt with death just to get a spark of happiness and enjoyment. She was too desperate to see how messed up Edward was, all she saw was that he was a hot vampire who could turn her into one and bring a change in her stale life.

@RissaFaith94 3 жыл бұрын
I've said this (the boyfriend's side) to friends before. Like, it's great that you appreciate me and that you feel like I'm a positive influence in your life, but I'm human. I'm mortal, and apart from that, not all relationships of any nature last for life. I don't want someone I care about to be so dependent upon me that they couldn't function if something happened to me or if we parted ways. I would want them to be happy and fulfilled with or without me in the picture. If someone you know is actively trying to convince you that you need them and that you wouldn't be able to function without them, that is a problem and NOT a mark of true love. (Side note, this is why I personally hate phrases like, "No-one will ever love you like I do." Most people probably just mean to express that their love is so strong they can't imagine anyone else ever matching it, but what it sounds like to me is, "I am the only person who will ever truly love you, and if you think you can find anything better outside of me, you're lying to yourself," and like... that is such a narcissistic and potentially toxic message to communicate to someone you supposedly love.)

another huge red flag about edward is the way he describes her peers, people the exact same age as her, as children. it just really emphasizes how old he really is and the fact that their relationship is pretty much grooming. Twilight works better as a horror story of a girl completely deconstructing who she is as a person just so she can be desirable for this perfect being she puts on a pedestal, who in reality is just some creepy old guy with the face of a teenager and the lust to literally kill her.

Yup, twilight wouldn't have happened if Edward wasn't so pretty. Turn to any page where they're together in the book and all she can think about is how perfect he is. If she'd met him in his true form, a 103 year old man, or even if he just looked like Mike, a regular teenage boy, she wouldn't be so enticed. Bella in the books is extremely shallow, it's difficult to re-read the books as an adult.

@@misspriss2482 In Charlie's defense, Bella isn't exactly good at life. I mean, the two guys she's closest with are manipulative, creepy, and borderline abusive (Jacob literally assaults her at one point, and Edward sneaks into her room to watch her sleep). She isn't really able to keep herself safe, because she's very naive. While I do think that's an overreaction and that he should never have done it, I also don't really consider it to be as bad as Edward or Jacob.

I would add manipulative and abusive to Bella's list of traits, she isn't so naive. She knows what she is doing when she threatens to kill herself to stop Edward leaving or begins putting herself in harms way to gain his attention. She also repeatedly tries to emotionally manipulate him when it comes to getting what she wants, from him dating her to trying to convince him to sleep with her and turn her. Okay, hear me out. As a teenage girl, the thing with the "you have a problem - is it my fault" really was an issue. That stuff was ingrained in every single girl's mind I have ever known. (Well, maybe one or two where it wasn't and they did get problems because of that.) And it STILL happens today. A girl gets raped, the immediate reaction is: what was she wearing? Was she attractive? Did she act "reckless"? Girls ARE framed to think like this. And THAT is why so many females could identify with or understand the character of Bella. *Because this is literally what we were brought up to.*

The whole "as if you could outrun me" thing really bothers me too because with such a power imbalance, Bella really cannot give consent to anything in their relationship. Thanks to his superpowers, things are the way they are only because he lets it be that way. She cannot possibly reject his advances if he was determined to get his way, ever. With this implied coercion or threat, none of her decisions can be her own. That could never make for a good relationship. I'd like to see this explored more in superhero movies, ngl.

A superhero story where the hero is dating a civilian but the civilian can't get out of the relationship because of a severe power imbalance and media pressure to be a perfect darling couple and even if they managed it they'd forever have a reputation of being the person who broke their golden hero's heart and potentially be osterised from society for inadvertently breaking down the perfect image the public holds of their beloved saviour? Yeah, I'd read that.

It exists and it is so fucking underrated as a film. I'm pretty sure Cinema therapy themselves did an episode on it too. Like, I agree, I'd love to see MORE films explore it and in different ways too (Megamind was a kid's film and therefore rightfully restricted in what they could show, and Hal was portrayed as a shitty guy in the narrative long before he got superpowers handed to him), but at the very least we do have Megamind.

I thought they meant it in a trashy tv way cause I'd grown up watching bad movies with my sibling because we thought they were hilarious so I was actually really excited. About halfway through the movie I'd already made a few snide comments about the movie and a couple of the girls there started saying things like "omg Edward is so romantic he's my dream guy." And it just got progressively worse until I realized I was trapped at a spend the night with a cult of Edward obsessed highschool girls. It was terrifying.

I think guilt plays a role in getting with a "bad boy"... You can see them hurting, despite the toxicity, you can see their actions come from a place of hurt, and if you're anything like me, you'd feel an obligation to make them feel better. I've fallen into this trap in a platonic friendship, let me just say that no one is worth sacrificing yourself over. If you're in the freezing ocean, get on the damn plank. It sounds harsh, but it's worse to look in the mirror one day to find a miserable stranger staring back at you. Be "selfish" enough to aid your own survival before you lend a hand to others.

I think it is important to get a bit closer to the distinction between entering a relationship with someone who has flaws and someone who is a “fixer-upper”. The rough distinction can be made through this question; Can you accept this person as a romantic partner as they currently are, or would you enter the relationship only because you want a relationship with who you think they could be? Everyone has improvements to make, and when you are in a relationship both in individuals need to grow in order for the relationship itself to progress, but the relationship often necessitates and determines the direction of that growth. However, if you are not able to accept the person in their current state, that is probably a strong indication that you should not enter a relationship with them

She is so infuriating to me because she doesn’t respect his boundaries I mean ok? Yeah he watches her when she sleeps which is weird but then again, he’s a freaking Vampire. He tells her he won’t turn her but she keeps begging him to do so, I mean I can only imagine how constant that argument is, then when it comes to his agreement with one condition and that’s to marry him because that’s what she “Wanted” to be with him forever and ever right? But then she complains of old age which just makes her completely selfish and honestly I find Bella annoying, manipulative and emotionally unstable, I mean the poor guy was trying to chase her away from him in the first place because she’s human because in his world she’d be in danger, but Bella is like YOLO. Well, partially true. Cannabis and hallucinogens like LSD are quite safe as long as you don't try to drive high or some dumb shit, but I mean yeah, obviously not for kids, much like alcohol, except alcohol actually has nasty longterm physical, emotional, and relationship effects while weed and mild hallucinogens have generally no known harmful side effects and tend to alter the users' mood and thinking in a quite positive way, even after you're not high anymore. Anyway, kids shouldn't do drugs, but that doesn't make some drugs not helpful to adults and I just wanted to make you aware of that. Have a nice day!

My mom literally told me in 7th grade that I should be quieter & participate less in class because I'd never get a date that way.. And then in 9th grade when a date tried to assault me, she told me it was, of course, my fault because I must have led him on, and honestly what did I expect? I actually wonder if they think stuff like that BECAUSE they saw/read it in... EKHM... MASTERPIECES like Twilight, or if MASTERPIECES like Twilight tmjust brought that out, like providing them with a well known example of what they think relationships should look like. I have such a like-hate relationship with Twilight myself. Like the world Meyer set up could be a framework for a fascinating, smart fantasy story. But then combined with your typical fanfic-like level of bad writing, and idealizing abusive relationships, it's just a no to me. BTW I think I subconsciously view a story in a better light if all the stuff around characters, especially main characters, aren't there just to justify a plot convenience. "Stuff" being family, friends, hobby, work etc. Like having Anastasia in 50 Shades work in that publishing company or wherever she worked so that her boss can abuse her, people can praise her and Christian can buy the company so he can control her etc. Or Tessa in the new After movie - she becomes an intern in a publishing company or whatever the heck that was just so we can have her boss tell her "you did a good job cleaning up that desk that no self-respecting company would ever allow to exist, now pack your things and we're flying to wherever on a work trip so we can show nothing of your work to the audience but instead get you drunk so you can drunk call your abusive ex boyfriend". Like wtf. Or having a character play piano just so they can do the "you can't play piano, let me show you" **awkward kinda hug from behind and then they kissed** The world around a person is not just background noise to a relationship, it's a valid part of that person's life on its own omg I can't-

It also broke my heart that he loved her so much and tried so hard for her, and she was like, "Oh, I suppose it'll be hard when he dies, but I'll have Edward, so oh well." My dad is the most important, loving, supportive man in my life, and I know that relationship will change when I find someone to have a romantic relationship with that I end up wanting to spend my life with, but he will always have a huge chunk of my heart. He's done so much for me my whole life, and continues to, and I know he always will. I know he'd do what Charlie would do and more in a heartbeat, and I know that one day my dad will be gone and that thought scares me, so the fact that Bella has such a blasé view on never seeing him again and living without him (and at one point the plan was to make him believe she died prematurely and shatter his heart and she really just glazed past that like she didn't give a shit) really blows my mind. I'll be honest: Charlie deserved a better daughter and family. Bella was a seriously selfish, one track minded little bitch and always brushed off just how much he did for her like, "Well, he wasn't there for me as a kid," as if she CHOSE to not see him even for holidays and abandoned HIM despite his best efforts.

And Jonathan is exactly right, Edward used tactics to terrify Bella away from him ON PURPOSE... so HOW and WHY in the HECK would she still want to be with him? Other than how "stunningly gorgeous" he is, what is so alluring about him? (This isn't me throwing shade on Pattinson, he is really pretty and I have no ill will towards him or Kristen Stewart for their looks and talents. I just think the YA novel trope of having the gorgeous female lead character look past ALL the shortcomings and straight-up toxicity of their love interest, especially if there's a love triangle, just because they're "pensive" or "melancholy/moody" and drop-dead gorgeous too.)

I recently watched all of the Twilight movies, and there is one thing that really stuck out to me about Bella. So in the first movie, it is mentioned that Bella has spent most of her life being the parent of her own mom. The main reason why she is with her dad is to give her mom some space. So in the start of this story, she has moved in with her dad, and is finding herself with more time on her hands. Charlie doesn't need her the same way as her mother did. Then she meets Edward, and he shows her special attention. Even if there are red flags, if she is even aware of the red flags she is seeing, the idea of having someone there for her, paying special attention to her and not the other way around, is a powerful drug for her. Having Edward watching her sleep makes her feel safe and prioritized. Any uncomfortable feeling she may have is pushed aside by that feeling. It escalates when the Cullens family all pitch in to protect her. Even Rosalie, who thinks Edward is being reckless by bringing this girl into the family, agrees to throw off the scent when the crazy killer-vampires decide that Bella is a special snack. So now a girl who has spent most of her life being a caretaker becomes the one who is being taken cared for by not only this creepy dude, but also his family. It also mirrors real life, how abusive fuckwads like this prey upon those who are vulnerable. Which is the tragedy of Bella Swan. She is vulnerable and with very little sense of self, so her relationships become her sense of self.

I never realized how scary Edward is. Honestly Jacob probably is scary too because he is meaner than Edward.

Her need for a relationship overrides the processing of the risks. Because humans are social creatures, and when you deprives them of a sense of community and self-worth, they will settle for anything.

@@cdorothy444 I mean... kind of? You can't choose how you feel, you *can* choose how you respond to those feelings. She can't just stop liking him like turning off a switch, that's beyond her control and not how emotions work. She *can* stop perusing him romantically when he tells her to stop.

@@mykodibear17 That isn't accurate. You choose whether to be respectful of other people's wishes, and you choose how you view situations such as this one. She chooses to view 'I don't want you' as an invitation to pursue rather than 'this guy doesn't want me, and I don't want someone that doesn't want me'. If she chose that philosophy, she would naturally stop feeling desire towards him. Emotions are not exactly controllable, but how we choose to react or ignore external input and reason have an effect on our emotions.

@@saribeepo.o5111 yeah, but how does one choose to look at a situation differently? I understand the "you can choose your responses to feelings" thing, now, but the worldview thing, like how you interpret situations, that shit only comes with personal experience and time I think because it certainly isn't something I can "just do" or some bullshit like that. Genuine question, sorry if I come off defensive, it's just my emotional investment in my own personal growth is really high, but my resources to accomplish that are very limited at this time, so I'm doing all the online sleuthing I can to learn how others view the world compared to me.
