Hey, I studied the Yemeni Crisis and Civil War for my final project in my IS 195 class two years ago, and I have a decent grasp of it if you're interested! Here's the breakdown: The Crisis refers to the civilian hunger, poverty, and disease that has resulted from the civil war. It's bad. One child dies every ten minutes from disease in Yemen. The Crisis was caused by the Yemeni Civil War. Basically, Houthi rebels are fighting against Saudi-led forces. The Houthis are Northern reformers, while the Saudi forces include imperialist foreigners, Yemeni government forces, and separatist Southerners. The US supports the Saudis because of old Cold War ties and oil dependencies. (Neither side is really good: the Houthis want to return to pre-Cold War theocracy, the Saudis want regional dominance, the Yemeni government is pretty corrupt, and the separatists want to return to a failed communist government. There's not really anyone to cheer for.) The War is often portrayed by news media as part of the proxy war between Shia Islam and Sunni Islam, but that's all a façade to make it easier to discuss. Really, the reasons for the war come from decades of corruption, Cold War tensions, and 19th-century colonialism. It's purely political, not religious. It's much more complicated than this, but this is a decent brief overview. Let me know if you want to know more!
