Not only back then, but most vessels today still lack air conditioning except in areas containing vital electronics which would malfunction or fail if they got too hot. Everything about warships is about efficiency, whether it's energy, personnel or just physical space.

Served 2000-2012 and little or no air-conditioning on board ship.... when I got assigned to a new vessel the air-conditioning wasn't working it was pumping hot air (slow clap) instead.... and we got deployed to the gulf.... thick flash hoods in a pressure cooker... Good times 😆

Well, I was never on a carrier, but we had AC on the destroyer I served on from 83 to 88. So I'm sure there was some kind of AC on the carrier. Having said that, the AC was always inadequate in the crew or officers quarters. The only place it was decent was in areas like the combat information center, because all the electronic gadgets needed to be kept cool.

fun fact, canopy collision deaths were a pretty big issue with older fighter jets, even when a plane wasn't in a flat spin. there are a lot of incidents where the canopy did not separate properly and the ejecting crew were killed or seriously injured. the issue has been mostly resolved for pretty much every modern airframe, but modern ejection seats are still designed to extend well above the pilots head, and usually have a sharp spike, or a steal arm designed specifically to shatter through a canopy should it not separate properly.

They actually changed the ejection sequence in the f14 by having the crew ejecting the canopy before firing off the seats.

At least on the destroyer I was on, the AC worked great especially in the berthing spaces (gotta keep fungi from growing). The hangar and anywhere else outside the pressurized hull had no AC, but inside was always cool.

This is one of the weirded things about military budgets, especially in the US. The amount of money they go through is ridiculous, especially when it comes to technology, but then they'll have very little money for basic comforts like A/C. Essentially, the personnel will handle equipment worth six figures and up, but usually be awarded the same quality of life as someone living in a run down trailer park.

3:56 you’re absolutely correct, and on top of that he should be wearing a helmet. 26:45 fun fact about Anthony Edwards - the whole cast were taken up in jets for this film, reportedly Edwards was the only one to not throw up. Fast forward 30+ years to the sequel, the cast were taken up in the jets, most of them threw up… one of those who didn’t was Miles Teller, who plays Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw. Like “father”, like “son”. Can’t wait for you to do TG:M when that time comes.

In regards to the proximity to an airfield thing, the parking lot for my college campus is right next to a runway. Granted it’s an aviation specific school and they use the runway as well as the city airport, but it’s still close enough for the engines to block out any sound.

I saw the sequel yesterday and it was absolutely brilliant. It wasn't like most sequels which are made after a long time because it didn't find a way to taint the original. If anyone hasn't seen the movie yet, I'd highly reconmmend it. It's a brilliant love letter to the 80s, with thrilling action and a movie which leaves behind its own legacy whilst ticking all the boxes which we had when entering the cinema to watch the movie.

The GPZ 900R is probably the most iconic ninja that Kawasaki launched next to the 250R Ninja that almost every motorcycle rider began riding on as their first “real” motorcycle. (My first was a 2009 250R) I love that they kept with the Ninja line in the new Top Gun movie but with the beast that is the supercharged Ninja H2R.

The picture at 21:19 was a WW2 study of after action combat damage of planes that returned to base. Initially they wanted to armor up where the red dots are because that’s where the damage was but then they realized they were looking at planes that made it back. So they armored up the clear areas and plane survivability increased.

When Charlie leaves the bar and goes back to a table, she's sitting with an guy older than her, and that's Pettigrew. It also makes sense from the point of view that she'd be having a drink with one of the instructors.

People always talk about how Topgun increased recruitment for US Navy. Well, that only tells half the story. Every kid that watched it wanted to become a fighter pilot. A close friend's dad became one because he saw it as a kid while studying in Istanbul. Not just Americans, had the same effect for every country.

My dad watched it many times as a kid, he loved planes and wanted to be a fighter pilot, and at 17 he enlisted in the marine core. He then climbed the ranks, went to college and became an officer, and someone picked him to go to flight school. He then flew the f 18 hornet for many years. He also fought in Afghanistan. He is now retired after 20 years in the military. The crazy thing is, he now flies A 4 Skyhawks (like in this movie) training the Air Force in dogfighting as an instructor. He is literally Jester in this movie now, and he is one of the best fighter pilots. It's crazy to think about how much of an influence this movie has. And the newest movie is a love letter to people like my dad who watched top gun as a kid, who became real fighter pilots.

Fun fact: The hard deck was meant to simulate the ground for the training exercise, so by going under the hard deck.. even momentarily is equivalent to crashing into the ground. Maverick lost that engagement when he crashed into the ground. :)

True enough, but given that he chased Jester out of the engagement he should have called it a maneuver kill and rolled out victorious. The whole point of it, though, is that Iceman is right all along. The only time he isn't right is the incident that gets Goose killed. They're supposed to be a team and his moment of weakness is not wanting to give the W to Maverick. The competition can drive them to new heights of excellence, but when it becomes toxic accidents happen.

Yes maverick should be reprimanded for following him, but if your instructors break the rules of “don’t cross this invisible line or else” how can students in a HIGHLY competitive environment (it’s not like this in real life to be fair) be expected to follow orders as well. Iceman is such a good contrast to Mav. He’s the perfect pilot, what mav could be if he matured. I like how he doesn’t let his dislike of Mav muddle with his professionalism. There’s still a baseline respect, but Mav has none of that for him (Walk in the park line) which rlly shows how much of a child he still is. SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR THE NEW TOP GUN That’s my one gripe about the new one, the meanie Hangman is pretty one note (until the end) and doesn’t give a rats ass about professionalism. He’s just a bully.

Spoilers! I think they made Hangman like that in the new one to show how Mav really acted back then and how it was perceived. They also flipped it with Rooster acting more like Ice because he doesn't really react to the teasing until the little fight

They are their call signs essentially and it’s made pretty clear that both styles have their merits. Iceman is more reliable but predictable Maverick is instinct and unpredictable. By the end they come to understand each other and incorporate what they learned from each other to be better pilots.

Viper has the biggest win in the movie when he absolutely destroys Maverick after the first mission against Jester. He doesn't raise his voice, doesn't do that faux macho growling, doesn't yell or get angry or anything. Just stands there not even looking at Maverick and Goose, tells them exactly how it is in that ice cold matter of fact no room for interpretation way. He comes off as so far above them that he doesn't need to lose his composure, he is a wall of 'don't even try it' that even Maverick can't mess with. See how Maverick swallows hard and takes a brief moment before responding, that look of fear in his eyes. That's how a commanding officer handles issues. No 'roid rage, no screaming, no insults. Just stone cold do what I say because I'm the god damn boss around here total obliteration of Maverick's attitude.

I was the kind of kid who wanted to be Viper isntead of Maverick, Obi-Wan instead of Luke, and Mr. Miyagi instead of Daniel. Thankfully, now that I'm older, Viper's example is far more realistic for me to emulate.

One personal win for me is at 12:38 where you can see Goose's kid holding a G1 Starscream toy. It's a cool detail for us Transformers fans, while also following the theme of the movie!

Fun Fact: The scene where Maverick and Goose “keep up foreign relations” and Goose takes a Polaroid is sorta true. During Freedom of Navigation exercises in the Gulf of Sidra, two f14s intercepted two Libyan mig 25s over the Gulf. During which one of the f14s formed up alongside one of the Libyan migs. The RIO (the guy in the backseat of the Tomcat) decided to give the mig “the birdie” and took a picture of the mig. If you look up “Gulf of Sidra incident mig25” you’ll probably find the picture of the bright white mig25. Apparently it was super common for RIOs to bring cameras on sorties. There’s even a picture of a RIO reading a magazine with the f14 on the cover!

That said, the side shot of the two aircraft, is physically impossible to pull off in real life. There is no way to orient an F-14 and F-5, so it matches that shot, without tail fins coliding with each other.

@@digitalutopia1 Yea I that’s why it was sorta true. First of all that’s a huge bubble violation (term meaning you are way too close) on top of literally not being possible. A pilot who helped with filming said that they just took a video of the f14 up side down and an f5 going straight and spliced the two together. They also say a -4g dive which isn’t possible for a human body to even handle

I was in NJROTC in high school, and we’d watch Top Gun a few times a month when we didn’t have anything to do. We also had a Navy Ball every year (big dance for all the cadets) and those of us on the Armed Drill Team would sing You’ve lost that loving feeling to our instructors (retired navy captain and senior chief). They hated it. They told us every year not to do it. We still did it. Was worth it every time. XD

I would disagree about the part where you said it was 4 minutes in before we meet any actual characters. The fighter jets were very much characters in their own right in this movie, especially when you consider that the Navy was really hoping Top Gun would be a nice little recruitment campaign for them, hence all the cooperation in making it.

I did ROTC in high school a few years ago. One of my instructors was Lt Colonel Seckinger, the pilot of the mig that Maverick gives the bird too. He’s a Major at the time of this movie but you can see his name in the end credits. Pretty cool stuff

My dad is an F18 pilot, Colonel in the Marine Corps. He graduated Top Gun in the 80s when the first movie came out. We celebrated his 65th birthday on Friday. We saw Top Gun on IMAX then took Dad to the regional airport for a discovery flight on an Extra 100. He got to show off his fighter pilot skills. The grin on his face was priceless. 18:03 Bit of Trivia, Sundown's call sign is a nod to the Sundowners, an actual Navy Flight unit established in the 1950s. The symbol on his helmet is the same one they have on their tailwings and he wears a "Tomcat" patch, which Sundowners would also wear which was a nod to the type of jets they'd fly, the F-14A Tomcat . My guess is Sundown either was either a part of the Sundowners at somepoint or has some connection to them, or maybe he was inspired by them.

Okay, explanation time: the F-14A had a massive flaw in its engines. The process is complicated on why but I'll do my best to explain here. So, jet engines have a front air intake, taking in air so that fuel can be combined with oxygen and then combusting the mixture to produce thrust. The F-14A's engines were delicately dangerous that jet wash, dirty air coming from the afterburner leftover from the mixture, can damage it and its ability to produce the thrust necessary to keep the aircraft in the air. No thrust means a stall, which can lead to a flat spin that pinned pilots forward. Most couldn't eject because the ejection handles were behind their head instead of between their legs like we have now. Regardless of its flaws, the F-14 is a thing of beauty. (Also, can we get EGA War of the Worlds 2003? Love that movie.)

The issue with the Pratt and Whitney TF-30 (the standard F-14A engine that was upgraded to the General Electric F-110 in the F-14B) wasn’t that it was particularly susceptible to jet wash. Every engine has issues with FOD or dirty air getting into the engine. The TF-30 specifically had issues with compressor stalls. These were triggered when the pilot made throttle adjustments too quickly or pulled very high AoA. Less commonly the TF-30 would suffer compressor stalls at high Mach speeds. These were called, as is no surprise, high Mach stalls.

It meant the canopy could be jettisoned by itself, giving time for it to fly clear of the cockpit before the crew ejected. Before that change, it was a single rapid 3-stage sequence - canopy, RIO, pilot - all within a second.

9:08 The cool thing is my dad actually does this now. And he actually flies the a4 Skyhawk, training the Air Force in dogfighting as an instructor. Before that he flew f 18s in the military. i watched maverick two days ago with my dad, and let me just say i loved it so much, definitely one of the best movies i’ve seen in years. i wasn’t alive when top gun came out, i was born like 20 years later but my dad got me into it and i loved it so much, but i must say the sequel probably is better for me. i understand that isn’t everyone’s opinion because obviously there is some great nostalgia for many people on the first one but the sequel was just so amazing i want to watch it again instantly

In regards to the propaganda element. Top Gun has become a sort of "low-hanging fruit" for those who want to talk about propaganda in film. Heck. When you read reviews for the new film, there are a lot of critics who are a bit too obvious about their discomfort with liking a movie franchise that pop culture has so deeply associated with propaganda. A lot of reviews seem to include an almost obligatory "Let's talk about how Top Gun is propaganda" as if they had only read a few blog posts about how the Navy helped make it therefore it was built from the ground up to be a pro-war propaganda piece. The problem starts when you actually start reading up on the production of the film. While a good argument could be made that Top Gun became propaganda on release, a equally good argument can be made that it wasn't exactly written or produced as such. Moreover. That the Navy was so directly involved doesn't mean that they took a strong, hands-on role in writing the script. In Top Gun's case, the Navy's input on the script was largely technical in nature. They helped the filmmakers and cast act and talk like Navy pilots but when it comes to the underlying plot and characters, the Navy was largely hands-off. They didn't really need to change much because the movie didn't really have any strong statements that stood out. Without really wanting to sound dismissive, the script wasn't exactly flush with political or ideological meaning. It was (at its core) a sort of sports film with the Top Gun pilots sharing more in common with football or basketball players than anything else. The Navy didn't really have to step in and say "Please change the plot to make us more appealing" so their contributions ended up being much more technical than creative. That being said. After release, it is undeniable that Top Gun had propaganda (in the most traditional use of the term) value. It is well noted by this point that Navy recruitment shot up and the public's view on American fighter pilots skyrocketed. It did something that every propaganda film always wants to do. It became a part of pop culture. Still. Was it by design? Was the movie made as propaganda or did it just become propaganda after release? It seems like semantics but it is a important distinction. If it is the former, a lot of criticism, college essays, blog posts, and critical work is correct. If it is the latter? Suddenly a lot of that content is pointed at the wrong target and has just been kinda accepted by a lot of people just because it sounds smart and politically savvy. If anything, Top Gun is a good example of how the artist doesn't always have control over what happens to their art when it is out in the wild. Top Gun was probably not written or created to be propaganda but it became that after the fact. With that being the case, can blame be laid on Hollywood, the filmmakers, or even the film itself? Would it make more sense to add a bit more nuance to the propaganda label that is so eagerly (and sometimes desperately) applied to the film for the sake of honesty?

A big part of this imo is Tony Scott. I don't think he was trying to make a propaganda film either, but he has a background in commercials. He's one of the greatest commercial directors of all time. He won all sorts of Advertising awards before going to feature films. The man had an incredible eye and knew how to make shit look cool AF in a way very few ever could. Even now, most commercials look lame as hell compared to any random frame from one of his films. He was a master of his craft and knew how to make something look appealing as hell. And this also extends to the homoeroticism of the film as well. Tony isn't gay or bi as far as we know, but he can't help but to lovingly gloss his camera all over these shirtless men when they play volleyball. Because that looks cool and awesome. It's clear from even his very first film that all of his work fucks. He knows sexy as well as anyone and that goes back to his commercial roots.

@18:17 I remember first time watching this movie thinking I have no idea what Iceman was going to say. He's setup as the antagonist of the film but never the villain. So I wasn't sure if he was going to console the grieving Maverick or mock him for it being his fault. It's really cool how there's so much hesitation in his speech. He knew he had to choose his words very carefully. It's hard to imagine that Maverick would want to hear anything from the guy he's been chasing so hard and might have killed his best friend trying to beat. You can also see it in Tom Cruise face he's tense and waiting for the smallest comment he can misinterpret to turn around and knock Iceman out.

Also, fun fact: the USS Oriskany (the carrier Mav's dad deployed on) was a refit Essex class, which didn't employ the F-4. The first time I watched Top Gun I didn't like Iceman because I thought he was a jerk but watching it again as an adult he was never really a superjerk, he mostly points out mavericks immature behavior in the air and in his own way wants him well. It's a good rivalry without being true enemies!

The knew top gun was so good (NO SPOILERS HERE). I saw it in 4DX (basically those immersive seats where they throw u around and spray water and wind in your face) And I highly recommend that experience. The movie is a perfect homage to the original whilst making use of advancements in cinema technology/capabilities to deliver a fresh spectacle for the new generation.

They didn’t use the same term “heart desk.” It’s “hard deck” which stipulates an altitude that would represent the ground, and anything below that in training, you’d be considered “dead.” Although it’s an aviator term (specifically fighter pilot jargon), we as skydivers also use the term-just not in the same context obviously.

I’ve been watching Top Gun since I was a little kid (i fast forwarded to the flying scenes and re-enacted those scenes with my matchbox airplanes while they happened and had the script memorized when most kids were reading Green Eggs and Ham) and it’s the reason I decided to follow my dreams to become a pilot. I watched the original to get amped up for my first solo flight and my check ride for my private pilot license and now I’m using the sequel to get me amped for my instrument check ride. My dad watched this movie in his teens and because of it he became a fighter jet pilot. Many years later I watched this movie as a kid and loved it, the soundtrack and the jet scenes are what stayed with me the most, I'm sure a lot of people can relate. It should be pointed out that at the scene at 10:22 - this is something I only learned of today but the "hard deck" mentioned is a training device. The altitude of the hard deck is to be treated as THE GROUND, and it's set some 10K feet up for the sake of safe training. So when Maverick says 'There was no danger, so I took it' he's essentially saying he (as far as the training scenario goes) flew underground for a few seconds. Definitely NOT fine. He'd be dead in a fireball on the ground if it wasn't a training exercise. So, yet another example of his reckless and dangerous flying that would eventually get someone killed.

Anyone training folks makes a point that you can't think like that, but it's there in a bunch of fiction anyway to give a protagonist an arc where they look cool until they meet reality and can't sim their way out of it.

Bryan Adams was also asked to contribute his song "Only The Strong Survive" to the soundtrack too, but he turned down both offers because he felt the movie glamorised war. To be fair, he's not wrong. It is often held as a prime example of the DoD using Hollywood as an ad agency. The navy even had recruitment tables set up in cinema foyers. Fair play to Bryan to turning down money and sticking to his principles. That said, as a 16-year-old who saw this at the cinema I thought it was great fun. Older me, recognises it has some flaws - but I still admire the flight choreography.

I’ve loved this movie for as long as i can remember. Me and my dad watched it growing up and it stuck with me until my first pay check i got when i started working at my local Theater. Bought top gun in a grocery store. Even put it as my favourite movie on my name tag. Then I got to watch Top gun Maverick in that same Theater (still an employee there) and it was amazing. I just cant believe how good the story and plot, the acting, the music, the shots, the scenery, and even the sound of the movie. Hadn’t felt like that since Ford V Ferrari. It’s awesome. If you haven’t seen this film or the new one, i suggest you do so…. By the way there’s a comment from someone who also works at a Theater who cant stop popping in and watching the intro to the movie while working… I am doing the same thing.

Saw the sequel and it was AMAZING. It respects the original without beating you over the head DisneySW-style, has it's own modern flavor, has MIND NUMBING flying, develops characters incredibly well, and infuses it with real heart that makes it more than just an action movie. Even if it wasn't a Top Gun movie, it was a good FILM. Also, regarding the flat spin in the OT Top Gun, it was really dangerous. The stunt pilot they had replicating it for takes actually died while performing a take for it. RIP.
