20:54 "You could argue that Ethan's devotion to his rule makes him weak, but I'd argue that the only thing keeping him going at the end is the people he's trying to protect." You hit the nail on the point here. One of the most common complaints I saw about the movie is that they don't like how they don't make Ethan make the 'tough' choices (and the one he seemingly made is only in his imagination), sacrificing the few for the many, but that's totally the whole point of Ethan's character. From the first film, he lost his entire team (and the ones who survived turned out to be traitors), he lost his student and almost lost his wife in 3, and a young innocent IMF operative is killed while he's forced to watch in Rogue Nation. That is bound to leave some nasty scars for the man, hence one of Ethan's absolute resolves is that the safety of his team and the innocents come before the mission, always. Sure, this often makes his missions unnecessary more difficult than it is, but the tradeoff is that he doesn't have to lose anybody he cares about. He can deal with a difficult mission. He has a resume of pulling the impossible again and again, after all. But he won't deal with letting someone died on his watch if he can help it. It's why he's willing to go rogue to save his wife in 3, it's why he risked causing a war between US and UK by drugging the UK Prime Minister and the head of MI6 just to save Benji. It's why he let the Apostles take the three nukes to save Luther and why he's willing to make the mission in Paris needlessly complicated and dangerous to ensure zero police casualty. A mission where nobody has to die is difficult, but it ISN'T impossible. And if it is possible to pull off then there's no reason not to pick it. The thought of every life he's able to save is what keeps him going through each insane odds each time, and his teammates are all devoted to him and would follow him to hell and back because of this reason. Contrast this with villains like Solomon Lane and John Lark, both are former agents who are implied to have gone through brutal ops just like Ethan did and are also forced to sacrifice lives for 'the good of many' until they're eventually driven numb by it all and come to think that life itself doesn't really matter so long as they manage to achieve their goals. Hence, they both turned into what Ethan Hunt could've been if he had allowed himself to 'make the tough choices' and trade lives for the sake of the missions. This is the crux of who Ethan as a character is for me: he's supposed to be the White Knight. A Knight who always protects the innocent to the best of his abilities even if life punished him severely for doing so. He's as close to a spy version of Batman or Captain America as possible. And that's what made him the hero of these films. ;)
@kurtwagner3502 жыл бұрын
Excellent explanation, Hunt refusing to let innocents die in the crossfire is I think what separates him from his contemporaries and it’s why I’m drawn to these movies especially

Plot rarely matters in Mission Impossible. What matters are expertly crafted practical stunts, visceral choreography, and Tom Cruise running for the upteenth time. Fallout has all of that in spades

Something I'm sure you've had mentioned is that, during the bathroom fight, there's one point after Walker rejoins that it basically plays the Mission Impossible theme song in punches. It's absolutely hilarious and awesome once you notice it.

The twinkly piano you mention at the 7:00 mark of the video actually reminds me a lot of "Light of the Seven" from the Game of Thrones season 6 soundtrack. If you listen to that song at the 1:25 mark you can actually hear a melody that resembles it. Maybe that's why it sounded familiar to you?

Twinkly piano = world of pure imagination Charlie and the chocolate factory
@onijester565 жыл бұрын
The song, "Pure Imagination", has a similar sound to it, but...isn't the twinkly itself. The main difference is that Pure Imagination has a specific three-note/three-note core to it, even in the build-up before the song itself starts as the scene opens. You can note this with a "one-and-two/three-and-four" count as soon as you hear the first pull of the violin before a piano even plays. You'll notice a low-middle-high note upon the piano, played twice. The one mentioned in the video has a two-note/four-note core. This gives a low-middle note progression, followed by a low-L.mid-H.mid-high progression. It kinda counts "One-and/one-and-two-and". The effect is the same, building a sense of mystery and suspense. But sadly it's not that specific compositional source. *frowny face*
@JoeBob-rc3cp5 жыл бұрын
@@onijester56 Fair. I didn't actually think/mean that they had the same progression, simply that the instrumentation and progression sounded reminiscent of WoPI. Since CW was thinking of a song that sounded familiar I figured I'd give my two cents. But you're right, not the same progression, and really, only the opening bars are similiar.

When the hook hits Lark I think it's pretty cool that they showed the hook hitting him but it went so fast that it wasn't disgusting. When the hook was coming (the first time I saw the movie) I was getting ready to look away but I didn't have to. I just liked that
@lukemurphy79173 жыл бұрын
I like the way in movies when a phone screen breaks it’s impossible to fix it when in reality they just ask for a hook to bring it back to the surface (back to what ever agency that they are apart of) where they recover data, either just replacing the screen or resoldering the memory chip to a new board and everything in between

Quick question about the scene at 16:33. Had Hunt managed to drop that payload onto Walker’s helicopter how would he had retrieved the detonator to remove the key? The helicopter, Lane and the detonator would’ve been destroyed and in that lake underneath them so... Hunt can’t take the key which mean Luther and Dunn and Faust can’t cut the wires to stop the bombs.

I realised yet another thing about this movie that's delightfully hidden away. When Hunt is talking about how he'll assume Lark's identity at the beginning of the film, he uses Walker's face to give a demonstration. As the audience we're literally shown who John Lark is but nobody knows it yet. We think it's hypothetical but he's right there.

I think it's worth mentioning, even a year later, that you know that Walker is a bad guy because while the phone is clearly an Apple phone, the logo is covered. Given what Rian Johnson said about bad guys not being able to have iPhones, one could infer that that's basically the movie telling you that Walker is evil.
