So there was a huge storm last night and it knocked out my internet. I'm currently on my Mother-in-law's wifi uploading this video. I had planned a brand new video for today, but the power and internet being in and out has really screwed me up. Hopefully it's back tonight and I'll be able to get the new one up. It's Matrix Resurrections, why be coy? It's ironically a 2 parter because I'm still in the early stages of editing the second half and it's a long movie. But I wanted to get something real and new and great up for y'all, so as soon as it's done I'll publish it, hopefully Monday. In the meantime, another combo! Yayyyyyy. ;)

As someone who saw this movie "blind" to outside controversy, I enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect but movies, including Marvel movies aren't perfect either. As far as the archetype of "strong character suppressing their feelings" it's one that I don't mind and that Brie Larson did well. Pick almost any action movie and the lead is usually some stoic badass with a history of being awesome without context behind it. And I am happy that women are getting more characters to look up to. I always thought one of the big issues with Captain Marvel was it was released between two big avenger movies and it failed to connect them. It would have been MUCH better to have planned for Black Widow during that time and have them examine life during the snap. Instead... well I don't want to assign motives where I can't prove motives, but looking at the movies released around this time it seems there was a bit of a backlash against stuff going on in political straw men in America at the time and I think Cpt. Marvel unfortunately got tainted by this trend needlessly.

"You should smile more." "You're too emotional." "You should be quiet." Being talked over. Being talked down to. Having your ideas taken by someone else and presented as their own. Confidence and assertiveness being characterized as "bitchy", "shrill", "whiny", etc. These are all things that would have a lot of women nodding their head in recognition. I would be shocked if a woman reading this hasn't experienced at least one of the above, whether it was directed at them or they watched it happen to another. A lot of the above themes and attitudes were shown in the movie directed at Carol Danvers, which is why it resonated with so many when she succeeded despite the attitudes of the other characters towards her. Why the scene of her getting up every time someone tried to drag her low felt powerful, and why the line "I have nothing to prove to you" struck home. If the exact same performance had been given by a man, without changing a line, inflection, or facial tick, people would probably be saying it was a decent performance. For instance, Keanu Reeves in the Matrix was even more deadpan, and yet the Matrix was highly praised. Tom Cruise in Top Gun was just as cocky, but that's considered a classic as well. Could the movie have been better? Undoubtedly. There are parts where the action falters, the dialogue needed tweaking, and the script could have gone a different way to heighten the drama. But that doesn't change the emotional core of the movie, which is not letting others hold you down and keep you away from realizing your potential. It's something a lot of people needed to hear. Especially girls who want to do something that women have only been allowed to do within the past 30-ish years, like being a combat fighter pilot. Women were first allowed to pursue that career in the US Military in 1993. That's only 31 years ago. I really appreciated the discussion of empathy at the end of the video, as well as adding the historical context. Thank you.

It takes a special kind of world to complain about being told to “smile more.” Some would call it a First World. Anyhow, I miss the Madam Curies of a century ago who struggled against actual patriarchy and contributed more than most men today. It says a lot about people who complain about struggle when they neglect mentioning the great achievements of those who went through actual struggle. It’s all subjective, though. As for being ALLOWED to serve… It was kinda nice getting the right to vote WITHOUT the mandatory requirement of signing up for the draft. So much for equality, eh? My favorite irony of this whole woke infection… whining about cultural appropriation out of one side of their mouth and gate-keeping out the other. What, exactly, are the parameters for when a group of people has their culture protected from appropriation or required to share lest they be branded “gate-keepers”? Cause, here’s the thing… the MCU is a product of NERD culture which was a response to exclusion by the popular crowd: jocks and cheerleaders. Now that those NERDS have grown up and become tax-paying citizens able to grow the behemoth that’s is the MCU, they have their NERD culture summarily APPROPRIATED for the sole purpose of lecturing NERDS about inclusivity. I don’t know how many words and phrases that I used which cause you confusion, so I’ll recommend one phrase for you to look up for your homework… Tone deafness. Cheers 🍻 and you should smile more. 😃

Thank you for all your work man. Love your stuff. As a straight white male myself, you reminded me that I not only liked Carol as a character, I *really* like Carol as a character lol. I love her struggle of trying to figure out her past, that was genuinely moving for me. The montage of her standing up over the years got me good and still gets me good too. I love how her overall arc in the story is about just letting loose and embracing herself for once. Damn Kree! VERY effective conflict there. I even just love her operating in an average scene!! I love her subdued sass and little smirks. She's not boisterous or peppy like I feel most people wanted/expected her to be, but she does have a certain confidence/swagger to her like you said. Her "wanna fight?" before sparring with Yon Rogg at the beginning was the moment I kinda fell in love with her lol. I even love the way she squares up when Talos and the Kree show up, she's got a great battle stance and I love her powers in general. I genuinely can't bother myself to hate her or Brie as people. (I always took Brie's interview humor as sarcastic from the beginning.) Everyone who is mad about them is wasting SO much energy. I will say the way they navigated her in Endgame was very clever--letting her kill Thanos would've been an unsatisfying conclusion for everyone--but I honestly hope they keep working on Carol as a character. Make people love her. Earn it. Push her through some more conflicts and force her to make tough calls and have to step up and be a leader for the Avengers. I don't think she should be "the main character" of the MCU, I think that would more comfortably fall onto Spiderman, but I could see her still being the leader character if that makes sense. She's a good person! She had some small but tender moments in Endgame, such as tearing up seeing all the peoples' identities who had been snapped, not to mention being the first to kneel to help Tony when he collapsed.

Brie Larson isn't wrong when it comes to critics, just think back to Turning Red and the kind of critics that movie had, saying it was "unrelatable", when it was about a young girl growing up. As an autistic woman, it can be frustrating to read critics and hear viewers praising movies with autistic characters that are bad representation from an autistic point of view (autistic characters being used as props to help the neurotypical character evolve, bad acting, lack of understanding of autism as a whole etc.), while leaving movies with good autistic characters to die in oblivion (I will always be angry about Power Rangers 2017 and how this movie is not getting a sequel). I'd love to have more diversity when it comes to reviewers, who will get what they're been shown and will be able to add their own spin because of their experience. I'm also pretty convinced that the "nothing about us without us" is the best way to get better representation (even if it's just someone on set helping to accurately portray whatever they're trying to portray). Fun fact: for an episode of Dollhouse, one of the characters was blind (long story if you don't know the show, but the character's basically a blank state and memories and life experience are put into them for various missions), and they had a blind consultant helping the actress. After a while, the director decided to exaggerate the blind character's blindness, becauste the able-bodied viewer wouldn't believe that she was supposed to be blind if they didn't. Isn't that infuriating? Anyway, my point is that we definitely need more diversity, and the best way to get that diversity is to involve diverse people on the writing and casting team, as well as other teams necessary to complete a movie/show/whatever. Otherwise, you're just gonna miss the audience you're representing. Even if you weren't targeting them (I'd argue most movies with autistic characters are made for a neurotypical audience), you have to be aware that they will watch your movies and they will see themselves on screen. Telling them that they're a burden on everyone is not the best way to get them on your side.

As an autistic trans woman, this, a thousand times this. Depictions of autistics are either the fully internalized, no outside interaction characters that are basically living props and symbols of hardship for their caregivers; or they're socially awkward super nerds with eidetic memories and a "unique world view" that helps their fellows grow (I'm looking at you Good Doctor). It gets frustrating. Then, of course, there's the men jumping at roles of trans women, and women playing trans men, with no input from the community being depicted, let alone actual trans performers. I'm excited to see Patty Jenkins's future projects though. I think she toed the line on keeping dudes interested but less challenged and empowering women (vacillating from one side of that line to the other as she went) .

I didn’t watch it when it originally came out but I remember all the stupid controversy mainly surrounding her acting with her feelings. But now seeing it myself I can tell she played this perfectly. Women are constantly taught to hide their emotions, to not be so emotional to it react and that’s what she did. Once she finally did let herself feel her emotions she was her most powerful. Such an important and great message. Definitely one of my favorite marvel movies

I don't think girls are less allowed to emote than boys! It depends on the emotion. Boys who cry are often reprimanded & they get a clear message from their peers that being "a sissy" might even get them beaten up! Girls, on the other hand, aren't allowed to get angry. We get accused of "behaving like men" for just displaying our natural personalities & emotions & get called a bitch for exactly the same attitudes as men who are praised for being aggressive, etc. So both men & women are punished for not "staying in their lane" & acting "like they're supposed to." In fact, men die sooner than women BECAUSE they stifle their emotions. If you're a man & you don't feel things, fine, but don't attack men who cry or show tenderness for being "weak." They're probably going to outlive you. I'll take that kind of "weakness". Survival of the fittest (best adapted) & all. Likewise, if you're a woman & actually enjoy being a stay at home mom or being more passive than men, great. But don't curry favor with men by attacking women who are naturally more aggressive or assertive or competitive. And vice versa. I think the error made by most people is just not letting people be human first, experiencing the whole range of human emotions without condemnation or criticism for those emotions or how they interact with other people, unless that interaction becomes violent, manipulative, abusive, or otherwise genuinely harms someone. Today, we seem to have the idea that harming people outside our tribe (those of a different opinion or political position) is justified & heroic, while we won't tolerate anyone offending ANYONE on OUR tribe, even with the gentlest of language & no ill intent. The feelings of people on our side must be protected at all costs. If someone is on our side, no criticism of them is ever allowed, even for egregious & abusive behavior, hate, & threats of violence, while if someone is perceived to be in that other tribe, then they're Nazis or fascists or hateful or bigots. Never mind the evidence. Don't bother reading what some perceived "enemy" actually wrote or even watching videos showing what was said or done & evaluating for yourself if your tribe is engaging in groupthink & you have been believing everything they say without question or asking for the evidence. That's prejudice (pre-judging without knowing all the facts). That's a hivemind. It's so dangerous. Ironically, the very message of Captain Marvel is that sometimes our tribe deceives us & uses us to fight the people THEY say are enemies. It's painful to realize this & admit we've been wrong or that we've been duped or used. But we must if we are going to be "free thinkers" indeed, searching for what is true & good, & not just being "on the right side" in our own imaginations, where we are always "Heroes.... Nobel warrior heroes."

I'm glad you brought up emotions and how the movie plays with that theme. It was one I enjoyed and found great that they explored. Carol is human so she is supposed to have emotions. She was trained that they make her weak. As you said, they knew she was way more powerful than them. Also I love the play on emotions when it comes to women as well. Brie plays Carol as emotionless to pull off the tough guy act and because she feels it's a weakness because she doesn't know who she is. Also women are called emotional as a bad thing. It also can be tied to men as well. We aren't supposed to show emotion because it doesn't make us look tough. So it's a great theme that I loved to see. Lastly, I'm glad they showed her OP. I love seeing OP characters. It sucks that people complained about Brie not smiling and being flat because I feel that she was supposed to play the character that way but oh well. The lives of women are of being told we are "too emotional", when men going around punching drywall and it's "well, he was angry." Men aren't supposed to have "soft, feminine" emotions. No one belittles a guy for showing anger, rage, even aggression (circumstances aside). They might judge him for acting on it, for whom he directs it at, but not for having the feeling or showing it. Any emotion from a woman is "too much". That's what this story is, telling her she has to hide who she is to fit into the masculine/Kree world. They limit her power, then tell her she is only what she is because of them, then belittle her for trying to rely on her own power instead of what they "gave" her (her suit, weapons, and training). For men on a Hero's Journey the story is about going from powerless to powerful, because in the gestalt consciousness the worst thing a man can be is powerless, is weak. For Carol's story it's about overcoming the strictures, bounds, and judgements of the society around her to recognize not only her own power, but the power of relying on and working with those around her. That is the quintessential woman's empowerment story. Not training under a master and becoming better than your mentor, but recognizing, acknowledging, and embracing your own strength, your own standards, your own judgement. And this movie embodies that perfectly, and dudes can't get it because it requires, you know, seeing things from a woman's perspective, and that might lead to realizing all sorts of bad things about our society and their own actions and assumptions.

100% this. This movie hit me just right, and I think the fact that it dealt so strongly with the emotion issue is why. Being belittled for being a woman and assumed to be emotional is so draining. Also, frankly, there are so many male characters that are praised for the same sort of "tough, emotionless, quiet" schtick, so it was fun and felt novel to see it with Carol as a character. People were bashing her for emoting as much as we see captain america or superman or batman or indiana jones or boba fett, etc etc etc... that felt like just another sexist blow to female and women's existence. Makes me really glad this channel did a wins cover of it.

We as men are told to be emotionless, so its somehow good to not emote at all (and as you pointed out, anger is fine when directed at the right things/people, cuz it's what we're good for I guess), but women are supposed to emote less.... no not like that! People are just unhappy with anything that points out these issues, on any level. I think a part of it is that we're all kinda powerless to do much about it. I can talk about how emotions are perfectly fine, behaviors are what you need to focus on, for the rest of my life... but my own footprint on that purpose will be extremely minor compared to the entire effort needed to make that change. Reactionary takes on the other hand are easy. Things already are that way, have been that way, theres history attached to them. Theres "power" in supporting them because you've been "winning" for the past however many years depending on the facet of society you focus on. Plus, you get to point at whatever issue and claim it's a result of that new change... Women are empowered and working? Clearly that's why dudes are lonely! Lack of emotional support and teaching mental health? No, it's the women, obvioisly. Theres deflection, "your problems aren't your fault!", so... it sells well... It’s the exact same criticism that was thrown the way of Kristen Stewart in Twilight and Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games. Both Bella Swan and Katniss Everdeen (in the books) are meant to be relatively emotionless characters on the outside. We read their POV and see that they are very turmoiled on the inside but they deliberately keep their emotions hidden (Bella because she’s introverted and Katniss because she self-describes as fiery and hiding her emotions keeps her safe). When the actresses then played the characters exactly how they were supposed to, everyone hated it because they stereotype women as emotional, so seeing a woman playing a role as an emotionless Keanu Reeves-type gets criticised. Larson, Lawrence and Stewart are all still getting s*** for it to this day. It’s internalised misogyny and it’s horrible.

Most that hated it where just salty she offended then, I can understand a general criticism about it being a setup for another event. However several movies in the MCU have done that, oddly enough the only 2 that are minority centric (Black Panther & Captain Marvel) are the ones that get the most hate. You can't count a few movies that are used as a plot device for Infinity War or Endgame. Antman And The Wasp, Dr. Strange, also where used basically to set up a character for a event. Ironman 3 set up Age of Ultron & Shang Chi all the way back in Phase 2. To say that Marvel was pushing characters & they were boring in the comics should be used across the board, like every character was that way. Literally Ironman was a unheard of, Thor, Ant-Man, etc.....

I have to say, the show One Punch Man made me love a hopelessly overpowered character - they can be fun and done really well. I think that's what happened in this movie - it felt done well, rather than a cop-out, especially when we wave her away as "busy" so that other beloved Marvel heroes can have the spotlight for crazy conflicts for story coherence. When all your heroes are going to win anyway (but we just don't say that out loud), why not have a hero who is just totally OP once she's figured out her powers?

When you look at a lot of the complaints about captain marvels character and personality, a lot of those issues can be pointed to male characters in the MCU yet they’re still loved. I’m not saying captain marvel gets hate bc of misogyny and/or sexism but it’s kinda hard not to see how others think that it is. The others don't make the cut for me, including Black widow, Wonder woman etc too male gazey for me. .🤷♀️ I was hooked by Carol's ugly war scream in battle. I was ecstatic! I remember being so disappointed in WW when gal gadot was making sexy faces _in the middle of a battle_ ! I don't mind a confident smile or smirk, but that was just too male gazey for my liking. Before I watch, I just want to say that the first time I saw this movie, there were several moments where I thought to myself "oh, the sexists are going to make fun of this part." Not only was I right, but about half of them are moments that literally appear in other MCU movies, but didn't receive any ire. Why? Because men did those things in the other MCU movies. One moment in particular is when she just yells at the alien as intimidation while her hands are still locked up. Thor literally does the EXACT same thing, yet I see Captain Marvel's moment used as an example of why her movie's bad countless times while not seeing ANY negative reaction at all to Thor doing the EXACT SAME THING. This movie simply is not as bad as the general public would have you think. They're just very closed-minded.

I am a big fan of the movie, and have loved seeing greater representation regardless of whether people say it feels "forced" or not. To be honest, all of Hollywood storytelling is forced. It's a cloth made of choices, even more so when it has a nine digit budget behind it. So yeah, even the eye-rolling parts are fine by me. If it made women feel good to see some version of a struggle they can identify with on a screen, I applaud it. And this movie was full of those moments. On the "other side" of the argument, I'm fine with the your charitable perspective of the anti side - up to a point. Where I stop being friendly is when groups reach the point of organized review bombing and intentional market manipulation. They'll claim "well, the movie is just bad", when it's statistically obvious the IMDB or other score systems have been systematically attacked and abused. You saw the movie and hated it? Fine, drop your one star review and complain in a long-winded rant. Totally understandable. But organizing thousands of people on forums to overwhelm systems - then claiming it as mass evidence of poor quality - is just being intentionally disingenuous and dishonest.

It's so utterly okay and functional as a movie that the wave of hate for it seemed absolutely hyperbolic and childish to me. I will admit it gets kinda boring and dragged once she was on earth, but her conflict with the Kree and the Skrull's backstory plot twist I found to be genuinely enthralling concepts. As a protagonist, she was again totally fine. I even liked her! Trying to figure out her history and pushing back against the Kree was something I genuinely got behind. It seemed more like hate for the actress and peoples' fear about her place in the MCU (ie, potentially killing Thanos) that were the driving force of the hate. I know this is only a response to one of your points but I disagree about the comparison to Black Widow and Wonder Woman etc to suggest that men clearly don't have a problem with female leads/superheroes. Both of these characters were HEAVILY sexualised throughout their time on screen. They may have been badass fighters (and I love both characters) but they were also portrayed in a way to appeal strongly to men through skin tight or skimpy outfits, flirting, sexualisation, and not being outspoken about anything feminist. Captain Marvel wasn't egregiously sexualised in that way and wasn't put in skimpy clothes or made to be cute/seductive for a male audience, but rather kick-ass and strong for a female audience. That definitely played a part, in my opinion, in why there were so many men online raging about how "woke" and "men hating" the film was and so I don't think you can use those examples to claim men don't have a problem with strong female superheroes. I mean look what happened with the Black Widow movie where they significantly toned down the sexualisation of her character from the iron man films and even made her costume less sexualised - there were a tonne of men slamming the movie and saying it had "gone woke" because to these men, not focusing on making female characters sexy and attractive to a male audience is going woke, apparently...

I think what you are overlooking in the "controversy" here (and I mostly ignored the gamergate folks so there wasn't a controversy without them) is that the issue people have with this particular female lead is that she was coming in as being more powerful than the male heroes that they identified with. The examples you mentioned didn't contain that element. If they did an atomic blonde/John wick mashup and made her demonstrably stronger than John Wick, the same folks would lose their minds. It is all silly anyway, Iron Man is magic and can do everything the plot requires and fix everything. Doctor Strange is magic and can do everything the plot requires and fix everything. Hulk is magic and can do everything the plot requires and fix everything. Thor is a god who is magic and can do everything the plot requires and fix everything. Absolutely none of them make any sense if you stop and think about it. Thing is, people accepted all of them but then reacted at this. Dr Strange is extremely OP but didn't get the same reaction. I think that the actors involved are far more correct about what was going on whether or not you like their responses. I didn't bother with any of that until after I watched the movie. It is just odd though, I don't like any of Clint Eastwood's politics or what he says but why would I let that effect my enjoyment of a movie he's in (or a movie he directed which he is also excellent at)? I mean, I get not wanting to watch a movie because the director/actor is a terrible human being. I watched the 9th Gate before I was aware about Polanski. I still think it was an excellent movie, I just won't watch anything else he's done. But if they just have political opinions that I strongly disagree with? I can ignore that and focus on the movie.

The problem with that analysis is that Iron Man, Dr Strange, Hulk, and Thor fight things in the same or bigger power scale. Iron Man fights things with even better tech than his suits. Dr. Strange fights evil deities and the most powerful witch in the multiverse. Thor fights other gods. The standalone Hulk movies flopped way harder than Captain Marvel did, so Hulk is counterevidence to your argument. Fanboys DIDN'T like that OP man. In any case, Hulk is physically OP but not in a super useful way. Few of the threats the Avengers face are seriously threatened by a superstrong giant in a blind frenzy. He contributes to the team but causes as many problems as he solves so he doesn't FEEL OP in the same way Captain Marvel does. Captain Marvel in her own movie never fights anything that is even close to equal to her power level. Once she comes into her power, there's nothing in the movie that can remotely challenge her. She's Superwoman in a universe without kryptonite. Add onto that that she's an unlikable character for a lot of the film and it's easy to see why people didn't like the movie. This isn't to say that I didn't like the movie. I thought it was fine, and understood that being emotionless and unlikable was what her character development was overcoming. But I agree it would have been nice to see her fighting something that was out of her league powerwise.
@grizzledsentinel46912 жыл бұрын
@@survivordave My point is that there is no such thing as an equal power in this universe where all of the characters can do whatever is required to win every single time. I mean, take Infinity War as an example. They had Black Widow fighting super powered aliens and holding her own. Does that make sense? Hell no. They had Iron Man take a moon to the face. Is there any universe where a suit would protect you from that damage? No, that isn't how physics work. Our bodies are still squishy. Even if your suit was fine you would be a puddle in the suit as your body was bashed up against it. I mean, cars are designed to protect us in ways a suit which fits around your body could not and people don't walk away from 90 mile per hour crashes with a tree. Imagine a 600 mile per hour crash with a moon. I get the point that she is superman and doesn't fight anyone of her power level but nobody in these movies do. They make zero sense and all the characters are magical and can do whatever the plot asks of them regardless of whether it makes any sense. You have hulk who got an OD of radiation which obviously would kill any human but magically turned into a being with muscles which don't conform at all to logic. None of the fighting he does in the original avengers movie is possible. At the very least with Thor they don't try to hide that he's a magical super being by pretending that science has anything to do with it so the laws of physics can go right out the window without having to struggle so much for a suspension of disbelief. I just don't see how she is more OP than characters who have zero limits when the plot requires them to do something. If anything, the writers are just a bit more honest about it. As for her not being likable, that's just a matter of opinion I guess. She's a snarky asshole who is a bit too full of herself. Of course, that is 100% the description of Tony Stark and Doctor Strange. I'll admit it turned me off of Ironman a bit in the beginning but I eventually got over it so I was fine when Doctor strange and then Captain marvel rolled out with the same character traits.

@@grizzledsentinel4691 I very much enjoyed Captain Marvel but I think the thing that gets me and weakens the finale of the movie for me personally is the way in which she wins. She just kind of flies through everything. It just kind of feels lazy on the part of the film makers. That's more of a nitpick than anything else though. I will say that I loved how she was used in Endgame because she saves the day but at the same time is used to show that brute force isn't enough to put Thanos away for good. I will say in comparisons to other characters in the OP category, Carol stands at the top and in not necessarily the most satisfying way but that's not her fault since she hasn't had enough time on screen. When you mention Dr. Strange as OP, that feels more informed than really anything shown on screen. In his two movies he didn't win so much as he made his opponents give up since he couldn't meaningfully hurt them. He lost to Thanos, but everyone lost to him, and he got outsmarted and trapped by Spider-Man. It happens with most of the other characters. Tony doesn't overpower Stane, Vanko, or Killian. Thor can't beat Hela. Hulk spends most of his time getting beaten by anyone who isn't a foot soldier. The only exception to this is Cap and that's because he mostly fights people with guns. Black Widow got whooped by Taskmaster, drew with Yelena, and beaten by the other Widows. Carol just kind of walked through everyone but I'm sure she'll get a challenge whenever her sequel movie/series comes out.

@@dwightlewis3519 Carol got captured in this film. Then she got captured again by the Kree AI before she broke free. Don't really see any difference there. In the first avengers movie, they literally have Hulk just diver through a metal alien ship. Don't really see any difference there. Nobody has to like any of these heroes. For instance, Iron man/Dr. Strange/Captain Marvel are all basically exactly the same personality and I can certainly get someone not liking the personality. It took a long time for tony stark to grow on me but I was more willing to accept Dr Strange when he came along with the same smarmy know-it-all asshole attitude. Captain Marvel was more of the same. If anybody disliked all 3 it would make perfect sense. I just don't get singling out Captain Marvel when everyone before levels up in power as the plot needs them to and she does the same. Her personality and Dr. Strange's personality were basically the same as Tony Stark although perhaps a bit muted. As long as people are consistent in acknowledging that she's really not any different than the others, then it is fine to like and dislike any of them. I just don't like it when people have an adverse reaction to her and struggle to justify that emotional response by pretending to be logical. Just own up to the reaction and move on, there actually isn't anything wrong with that.

I saw Captain Marvel in theaters and this was coming off of Infinity War. I feel that Captain Marvel is a good movie that unfortunately has to exist in the greater context of the MCU and I think this messed with my enjoyment of the film since I felt I had to balance it with the rest. It made me feel about Carol what I felt watching Superman in the theatrical cut of Justice League, this character feels story breaking. Superman just shows up and stomps out Steppenwolf while everyone else was getting beat down. You mention Carol being more powerful than the male heroes and I can agree with that being a key thing upsetting dudes. Me personally, the problem wasn't gender as much as it was introducing the far and away strongest Avenger for the first time just before the big finale but that's something to blame Marvel Studios and Disney for. I could never understand how some people would complain about Brie Larson showing very little emotion in this film when that lack of emotion is a major plot point of the movie. She's been trained and brainwashed as a warrior and the villain, 'Yon Rogg' - someone who Carol trusts a lot - commands her to supress her emotions which she does because if she doesn't obey command. the Supreme Intelligence would take her powers away and she would be worthless. She still has outbursts of emotion which Yon Rogg manipulates until eventually Nick Fury, Maria Rambeau & Talos unlock and harness that emotive side to her. Besides, Carol's emotive language throughout the film was through micro-movements and eyes that you could clearly & easily see through, facial movement, eye positioning, glances & body language. Even in her human flashbacks, she's very bubbly, charismatic and stands up for herself and Carol affirming her name is 'Carol' and not 'Vers' shows she's cut herself from the Kree propaganda and the Supreme Intelligence's lies and the montage of her proving she's human still gives me goosebumps. Unfortunately, that minority of fans that despise her describe her as 'cocky or arrogant' when she's neither of those things and is actually sarcastic, sweet and stands up for herself. From the years of 1995 to 2018, she goes from unaware of her self-maintenance, capabilities, power & humanity to acknowledging all of that and being very self-aware. She's still flawed and I believe, just like Ahsoka Tano, she'll go from a some-what likeable and flawed character to a strong & powerful character but not just from their abilities, powerful from their actions and words. Not everyone can relate to a hero but everybody can be inspired by them and I hope that's the case with Carol in the future as she's so harshly judged from only two appearances. On a positive note, the films pacing, visuals, characters, directing and sound track were amazing. I always get goosebumps (no pun intended :)

Technically, so is Dr. Strange if faced with an enemy that fits his realm of expertise, I.E. Magic threats. He is literally the last line of defense from specific kinds of incursions. He's a magical nuke. But in his own movie he's played off as just a kinda powerful, but cocky idiot. The Hulk was destroyed by the MCU. He has one storyline, that Ragnarok paid a bit of homage to, called World War Hulk where he literally kicks the crap out of ALL earth's heroes. In the comics Thanos and Hulk have thrown down several times, sometimes Hulk even won, but in the MCU he's ganked easily. So, why, when all these super powerful heroes were so carelessly powered down for the movies was Captain Marvel kept at full power? Edit: After rereading this I feel like I should say that I would feel the exact same way about the apparent powerlevels if this had been a Sentry movie and he had been kept at full power instead of powered down like those who came before him. @CaptainPikeachu2 жыл бұрын
I’ll be honest here, the Brie Larson hate/drama never made any sense to me. Even IF there’s issue with her delivery, the message of it wasn’t wrong and anyone who knows the message ought to be fine with it because they’d know that the film industry and film reviews have their issues and biases that need to be fixed with more representation. And as for how people viewed her, there’s certainly plenty of armchair psychologists and behaviorist making videos about how she seems but I feel like everyone forgot that when this stuff was being talked about, Don Cheadle publicly defended Brie and called out that folks were taking her interview behaviors out of context. Confirmation bias is a thing, people were wanting to find things wrong with Brie. And while I do understand that you’re trying to see all the sides and the nuance, I think it is incredibly important to note just how vitriolic the hate got for her, or how certain big KZbin channels would literally make dozens of videos day in and day out just trashing everything about her and influencing people’s perceptions through lies. You bring up other female superhero or lead films, and yes they didn’t get this kind of backlash but it’s important to also remember that people aren’t threatened by female heroes as long as they stay in their lane. Or rather, the actresses stay in their lane. Women can be allowed, but in conditional ways that doesn’t “bother” or “upset” certain people. The female heroes/actresses in the MCU before her didn’t directly speak out about issues in any “threatening” way, they stayed in “their lane”, but like you said, Brie spoke, and she spoke directly in ways that directly threatened white male hierarchy in the industry. She didn’t stay in her lane and just let things be what they are. By voicing it, she put an issue into the spotlight that some folks didn’t want to necessarily address. And it’s also important to note that many of the films you did name with female leads are also female characters made with a male gaze in mind that tends to sexualize the characters as desirable. Carol is not made with that in mind, and in fact outright goes against that viewpoint by simply just being her, not smiling, not desirable, and stating “I have nothing to prove”. Yes this film wasn’t hated solely because a woman is leading, but it is being hated on because a woman spoke up in ways that some people (often men) did not like and was not traditionally appealing or conforming. And the reaction was to try to bury the movie and the actress. THIS is how women can be treated in various spaces that may be dominated by men. What happened to Brie and this film is a microcosm of what happens when women do speak up in ways some folks deem “inappropriate” or “incorrect” or “undesirable”. Now is this movie some groundbreaking thing? No. It’s just a decently made film. So I don’t really care if people like it or not, but Brie Larson was given entirely unproportional hate and for what? Because she pointed out an issue in the industry that made certain people uncomfortable about their privilege? Even if the movie doesn’t deserve much, Brie deserved better than people trashing her and trying to tear apart her whole personality because she dared to speak to a real life issue that effects people still to this day.

You are definitely right. Its sucks how we live in a world where men blame women and women blame men and one race or belief to the other etc... It honestly does suck and wish we didn't have to live in a world so divided because "Someone said something I don't agree with so now I need to attack them with more of my opinions (Or just brainless verbal abuse), I just wish everyone would not necessarily all just get along but respect the other persons belief or idea (And no I'm not saying if they believe in being racist or sexist that it is good). Love you CW!

@@ephemispriest8069 Which nobody did. You will get called a misogynist, if you call a movie bad with misogynist arguments, not because you simply didn't like it. And pretending that you are somehow not allowed to dislike a movie for other reasons plays in the hand of people who do use those movies to fight some sort of culture war (or, to put it differently, to create a outrage culture in order to pull people to the right). Since I keep an eye on such channels and I am pretty sure I have seen your name in the comment section there...I don't think that you have much of a leg to stand on.

I see your point about people not *openly* saying they didn’t like this movie because the lead is a woman, but a lot of the subtext is misogynistic or at least an expression of internalised misogyny. The examples you gave that no one objected to mostly weren’t leads - Gamora is a secondary character in GotG, Black Widow in IM2 is basically a background character, Wasp is a co-lead at best and there was criticism of Wonder Woman by a very vocal minority (and she wasn’t even the lead in her own movie - she was a co-lead with Chris Pine). The misogyny for this movie is subtle but it’s there, even if it’s not explicit. When the actresses then played the characters exactly how they were supposed to, everyone hated it because they stereotype women as emotional, so a woman playing a role as an emotionless Keanu Reeves-type gets them criticised. Larson, Lawrence and Stewart are all still getting s*** for it to this day. It’s internalised misogyny and it’s horrible.

I would point out that every other female hero you listed that didn’t get hate were either love interests or heavily sexualized. Like Gamora, Wonder Woman, or Black Widow in Iron Man

Wrong WW2 received a lot of hate.
@jjanglesandfriends2 жыл бұрын
@@EgoHead710 I believe he was referencing the first movie. I’m aware of the hate for the 2nd. I wasn’t saying Captain Marvel was the only woman hero to ever get hate. But when Wonder Woman 2 got hate, people had very clear and existing reasons like the weird sexual assault aspect of the movie. One of the major waves of hate for Captain Marvel was around likability. The other women heroes didn’t struggle with that despite being arrogant or temperamental too. I’m suggesting them being love interests affects what they’re willing to accept from a female character sometimes. Honestly a lot of fans decided Zendaya’s MJ was only likable once she was turned into a love interest

THANK YOU! also a bunch of those female characters weren't the main characters either, it was a dude who was just as, if not more bada-s than her. (disclaimer, i didnt hear ANYTHING about alita battle angel at the time, so i cant speak on that movie) point is, there are more factors as to why those female heroes were acceptable vs the controversial captain marvel.

This video is the best explanation on the philosophy of cinemawins and why it's my favorite film channel. Talking about out-group mentality, empathy, and why the worst movie can be someone's favorite gives such a great look at how to look at movies in general. Tbh it's why I feel so annoyed by cinemasins videos, aside from the fact that I think cinemawins actually does analyze the movie in as many components it has--vfx, camera work, plot, acting, etc, cinemasins feels superficial and one-note.

First things first for me - I saw this movie 5 times in theater. I do still love it. Of course it has its issues, but I genuinely enjoy it through and through. The writing leaves much to be desired and they definitely could've tried a bit harder to ground Carol, but as it stands, I love it. I will say, something I feel needs to be added is how the LGBTQ community latched onto Carol, specifically Carol & Maria that I haven't seen happen much in the MCU except for Valkyrie. That to me is sort of a gray area, because as incidental as it was, a lot of people (me included) read a lot into the brief glimpse of Carol & Maria's relationship that most just overlook because they haven't HAD to look for scraps in every interaction. This isn't meant is a jab, it's just truth. Whatever your feelings are towards canon Marvel ships, most of the former leads have/had someone regardless of how it served the story, made sense or even had basic chemistry for that matter. Most of my favorite Marvel movies don't - CM & Ragnorak as obvious examples. I for one am extremely excited for The Marvels, granted it could be absolutely garbage and I'd still probably love it if it meant there's more development on Carol's dynamic with Monica - and personally ecstatic at the rumors of a Maria flashback and rumors of Valkyrie making an appearance. If people hate it, great! I couldn't care less, I personally relate and identify with Carol in ways I never could with most any other MCU character. Some of my least favorite MCU movies are hugely popular, it's simply just taste & boils down to character preference and truly how directors/writers interpret them

@@heroic_antagonist759 hey Bears watching. Tony pays for his overconfidence and arrogance. More than once. Ask Gabrielle says, it's a liability as well as the strength. Two of the three movies are about Tony losing everything because of his hubris and then clawing his way back up to even. And it was clear from interviews that Morgan Downey Jr loved the customers. And that he played the character for his kids which was endearing.
