From a character model perspective, I love the realism in Moana’s body specifically. Her arms especially. She has pretty muscular arms from what would have been a fair amount of physical work over her 16 years of life, and you can literally SEE the muscles tensing and relaxing realistically below her skin. Amazing.

i love how disney has been giving their females more 'bigger' arms. I loved how in encanto that isabella had bigger forearms and mirabel did too, it's great rep to see because a lot of their characters have smaller arms which is completely normal as well, but it's great to show that bigger arms are normal too.

I know this is more than two years old so someone has probably already mentioned this but a quick scan of the comments revealed nothing similar so: The ocean didn't pick Moana JUST because she saved the turtle, it was how she did it. Moana could have easily picked up the turtle and carried it to the water, but she didn't. She kept it safe as best she could while the turtle made the journey on its own, just like the ocean did for Moana. It chose her because it believed she understood that people need to do things for themselves, even if they have someone there to watch over them.

@yukisuzu74964 жыл бұрын
This is so true! There were numerous cases where people thought they were saving animals by providing too much help, so much so that the animal loses its abilities to survive on its owns. For sea turtles, they lay eggs on the beach, and a lot of the baby sea turtles DIE in the process of crawling into the ocean after they hatch. Had Moana directly picked up the turtle and put it into the water, she would be violating natural selection a whole lot more than she potentially already has.

10:13 You appear to have missed the point. Before Moana, each chief put a FLAT rock to make the island taller. They put flat rocks so their descendants will have a flat surface to put their own rocks, to further solidify their insistence on staying on the island. By placing a non-flat object on top, she still made the island taller, BUT she also forces the future generations to go elsewhere to put their rocks on top of, because they won't be able to place anything on top of the shell. She broke the cycle not by "being unique", but by physically preventing its perpetuation.
@harmenbreedeveld80264 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about this point as well: the next chief will have a difficult time placing anything on top of that. Maybe it is as you say, maybe the writers "simply" went for the symbolism of turning away from the land to the sea. Or maybe both. It was a smart scene anyways.

How did she put her kingdom in jeopardy? She was just incredibly naive, which was a result of being locked up for most of her life because of her sister. She thought that she'd found 'The One' and pressed for Elsa's blessing - which yes, wasn't very smart because of Elsa's ice powers, but she couldn't have KNOWN that Elsa had those powers and would freeze Arendelle. She then set out to make it right and she only trusted Prince Hans because he'd pulled the wool over her eyes - again, due to her naivete. She never intentionally put the kingdom in danger and she tried to make it right as soon as she realised what Elsa had done, and then she stopped Hans from killing Elsa once she got out of the castle after finding out that he was evil.

Another win, the song We Know the Way was a huge advancement for Disney in incorporating the character’s native language into the song that they’re singing in such a culturally sensitive way. The best we had before that would probably be Brave or Lilo and Stitch with the lullabies, as they were both not only sung by the characters in a personal and intimate manner, but but also were relevant to the situations they occurred in. We Know the Way was still huge in that it’s used to try to convey “these characters speak this language. This is how they communicate.” Additionally, when it switches to English, the music style and emphasis stays pretty much the same, which is extremely difficult when writing bilingual music due to phonetic differences between languages. This celebrates the Polynesian culture and invites the audience to cross the cultural divide in just a perfect way. There’s a video that explains it better that I’ll link and give the title for: How Disney Uses Languages kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKXbi3qwjNGmg9k

When Moana and Te Kā touch noses and breathe together, that also has significant meaning e.g. hongi for Maori, honi for Hawaiians. The theme of identity as about knowing who you are and where you are going by where you come from is also culturally important, and embodied in the principles of ocean navigation (wayfinding) that Maui teaches. I like how she has to grow up a bit before she's ready. She wants to go now, but even her grandmother to not just shrug off her father's advice. She needs to find a reason to go on an adventure. Her journey all about saving her people. Finding Maui, restoring the heart, even learning about how to sail save her island. People, people I know, have said that she is in defiance of her father, and she does a bit. But that's part of being a Chief, finding a stable path for your people. Her father tells her: "Our people will need a chief And there you are There comes a day When you're gonna look around And realize happiness is Where you are" ...and that's what she does. It's nice to find a movie that is a nice medium between independence and responsibility without saying either is inherently bad. ♥

10:16 Actually, I think there's a different meaning to that shell. Every chief puts on a flat rock to make the island taller... but also to allow the next chief in line to place his own rock and perpetuate the "stay only on the island" mentality. By putting on an uneven shell, she puts a stop to this grounded custom and allows her descendants to put their rocks on different islands, if anywhere at all.

One thing I particularly love about Moana is how it addresses trauma. While one main theme is definitely identity, the loss of identity is through severe trauma, and healing is the only thing that allows them to regain their identity. Maui breaks the world because he’s so traumatized by his parents’ abandonment of him that he will go to any extremes to impress and prove his value to humanity. Moana’s father keeps them on the island and refuses to let Moana even learn to sail because of his trauma after trying to leave the island and having his friend die in the process. Te Fiti turns into Te Ka, who people basically see as a monster, because of heat was essentially a horrific violation by Maui, having her very heart stolen from her. It is only through Moana’s acceptance of their fear, of their doubt, of their anger, and her *refusal to be stopped by it* that heals them. She shows her father that you can leave and come back. She shows Maui that you don’t have to save the world to be loved, just take responsibility for your actions and maybe be a good friend. And she shows Te Fiti that someone can recognize you and still show compassion and empathy for you, even when you’re so traumatized and enraged that you barely even recognize yourself. *starts crying every time that “You Know Who You Are” scene plays*

What took me by surprise was probably the first song of the film. Cause I didn't know much about the movie going in, so I thought the main conflict would be about her wanting to leave and overprotective dad going "no." While it does do that for the first act of the film, I was surprised that Moana was actually a strong and respectable leader of her community. Unlike another Cheif's daughter who was a "free spirit" and tended to venture as far away from people as possible to have wind blow in her hair and pose attractively with Blonde Mel Gibson. I thought it would also go the route of Brave and so many other "Modern" Disney Princesses where they don't want to be a princess. But Moana never really shyed away from leadership. It does show her rebellious side, but it shows her accepting a leadership role at a young age and is pretty competent at it. Unlike so many other "Princesses" who usually go "Responsibility and community?.. eww. I don't wanta be a princess or leader" I just found that her motivation to save her entire island unique and I can't recall seeing it in another Disney Princess flick. Well maybe accept Mulan but she never wanted to save all of china as her motivation, that kinda fell upon her. Her main motive was her father.
@sillau97 жыл бұрын
BellyThat Productions lol,you made me crack up about your description about Pocahontas,lol..but yeah,I liked that they had Moana accept and take her role as a daughters chief and be prepared how to lead,even tho she had conflict with her father disobeying anyone to go beyond the reef...but that she took big responsibility to help her people and her homeland/island
