Two things. Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon is inspired and I can no longer buy anyone else in that role. The final scene where he finds the Joker's card is actually chilling now that we know what would follow.

Honestly same. I didn’t see it in theaters, but the only thing that kept me convinced it was a Batman movie was that Christian bales character was named Bruce Wayne. At that time the only Batman villains i really knew were joker, penguin, catwoman. I had no idea who ras al ghul was, and I remember at the end thinking “Liam Neeson was cool and all, but I wish they made scarecrow the villain” cuz scarecrow was a guy in a mask. Of course eventually I grew up, I figured out who ras al ghul was, and now he’s up on my top 3 Batman villains with the other 2 being joker and two face

Scarecrow was the perfect secondary villain for this movie. Batman blames his childhood fears for the death of his parents. He seeks out a way to turn fear against criminals. But it's only after he confronts his deepest fears that he can prevail. By the time Batman had his final showdown with Ra's al Ghul, he wasn't afraid of anything. And that's why he prevailed.

I love that scene where The Scarecrow's like, "Dr. Crane isn't at the phone right now". 😂 On a serious note, scenes like that give us a reason as to why he's not affected by the gas he dispersed throughout the city. It's because like Batman, The Scarecrow's not really afraid of anything. And, The Scarecrow likes to use his fear to his advantage but for all the wrong reasons.

@@Alfei22 I couldn't disagree with you more. If what you said was true, then they would not have killed him off. Not only that, but RDJ as Iron Man is awesome in Infinity War, Endgame, and the Avengers. And Iron Man 2 is far from a masterpiece. It's easily one of the weaker MCU movies. I find it strange that you decrying the use of Iron Man in *AVENGERS* movies... like you do realize that he belongs in those movies for purely story reasons and it has nothing to do with making money? The *only* movie where I could see this complaint as justified is Spiderman Homecoming. Iron Man wasn't necessary... but at the same time his presence wasn't some cheap cash in. They actually used him as the character that made the most sense. But that movie came out in 2017. Iron Man 2 came out in 2010. So I really don't see what you mean.

I love this movie. Great job with this video but you forgot one major win. When Bruce defeats Ra's in the train he reiterates his line to him. "You never learned to mind your surroundings." Yes, it was another repeat of a line from earlier in the film, but the delivery of the line in that moment was simply excellent. His voice seemed to choke up a bit, deeply saddened that his mentor and a man who had become a father figure to him earlier in the movie was going to die in seconds. The fact that the decisions Ra's had made to potentially destroy Gotham could not enable Batman to save him. Christian Bale simply does not get enough credit for playing Bruce Wayne and Batman. When Affleck shows me some actual substance, I might entertain that he is at least on par with Bale in this role.

5:18 THANK YOU ! This is exactly why the "shaky blurry cam" was used. It is not meant to be an epic fight scene with slow mo and stupid effects with over dramatic punches and kicks, it's meant to show how Batman uses fear, confusion, and illusion to get a great advantage fighting groups of bad guys in a realistic way. This portrays perfectly how the baddies are experiencing him, almost like a shadow coming out of nowhere with a vague dark shape. Something more than just a man. Meanwhile, crapfleck runs around in his overdimensioned bdsm ironman suit with no regard to proper physics, while the bad guys all willingly wait their turn to get hammered.. I'm so in love with this movie. There are so many mirrorings and layers to this film which become apparent after repeated viewings. Begins' structure is a beat for beat play of The Hero's Journey as explicated by Joseph Campbell. Bruce loses his father with the words, 'Don't be afraid'. Ra's becomes Bruce's new father figure, and passes with that same line. The major theme of fear ties together with the character's development, where a childhood fear is harnessed and mastered by the adult. So the theme of the movie itself is the driver of the character arc as well as the premise of the plot. That's a triple win. The transitions between past and present are written and edited so as to be perfectly seamless. I can't think of another movie where the flashback sequences are so naturally blended into the story.

I already had Lenny's Fact 6 left thigh tat before this even came out so I'm a huge Nolan fan. To me, Batman Begins made me want to BECOME Batman. Thomas Wayne wasn't just some guy he was a great man. Bruce's first outing to meet Gordon is one of my favorite scenes in any Batman film ever and he's not even fully Batman yet. "Now we're two." Bravo The police escape is lifted directly from Year One and on a side not, the holding tank and police escape scene in the Batman is my favorite part of the film. He was the Producer and Story Writer for Man of Steel, and Executive Producer (aka the man basically financing the whole production) for Batman vs Superman. And he is also somewhat tied to Bat-Fleck and Wonder Woman. Warner Bros Studios is not going to easily let the man go, who is almost wholly responsible for making successful Batman and Superman movies and bringing the DCEU in full swing.

You know what’s interesting to notice? In this first version of the Bale Batman voice, he sounds like he’s trying to be more whispery and raspy, as opposed to the later versions of the Bale Batman voice which seems like an attempt to sound more gruff with extra rasp. Like there’s two different forms of intimidation that these two versions are going for, and I kinda like the first one more, it sounds more reserved, like he’s talking that way because he’s close to you, and you don’t need to know who they are, like an actual attempt at hiding their voice. Meanwhile the more that he goes on, he has to start grunt yelling like he’s trying out for a death metal band as a means to be intimidating sounding from all measures of distance

Bat Begins deals with Bruce overcoming fear and turning that fear against his enemies. Dark Knight finds an opponent entirely immune to his tricks and intimidation with no clear motive. Everything he learned in Begins is made irrelevant and he has to learn a new way to fight pure evil and the embodiment of chaos. DK Rises deals with Bruce having lost all fear of death and having to find it again to climb out of a literal and figurative hole to once again do the impossible and return to defeat his strongest opponent yet, with a little help from a nice lady who doesn't share his code against using guns on an opponent. I want to be honest this is my favorite of the trilogy, not hating The dark night by any means or even the dark knight rises they are still phenomenal, but truth be told there's something I've noticed with every single Batman movie or cartoon even that they eventually always do, there's just so much emphasis on the joker and while he's a great character for sure I think the reliance on using him in everything is becoming a bit stale, this one we have Ras Al ghul and scarecrow, less popular sure, but also just as important as to why this film works. Even the new Batman movie with Robert Pattinson has him in a deleted scene, and I don't mind that at all because of course it wasn't in the movie so it didn't take away from The Riddler plot, still I hope he doesn't become a crutch.

There is a nice throwback in the first scenes where the guy proclaims himself as 'the devil', and after the fighting scene Ra's al Ghul shows up. Ra's al Ghul can translate to 'demon's/devil's head' in Arabic, so it is interesting that he shows after the fight scene.

You missed one. The tram sequence with the Waynes on the way to the opera is visually based on Fritz Langs "Metropolis" from 1927, complete with with a gigantic Tower of power at the center (Wayne Tower), and misery hidden below. Seriously, compare 1:25 with the opening sequence of Metropolis, and you get the same picture, and you can possibly connect the themes of understanding the source of the problem.

I also like the matching of Ra’s telling him it’s not a dance and head butting him to when he pulls Falcone of the car and knocks him out with the same move…theatricality and deception can be powerful but brute force and seeming super human when he wasn’t also play into the fear around the bat

I believe the quick cut fight scenes are meant to imitate fights in a comic book. Most fights in comics give a different angle in every panel, and every punch gets it's own panel. Zack Snyder's Watchmen did something similar, but he chose to recreate panels almost perfectly, using slow motion any time a shot was a panel recreation. It gets a bit tedious and I personally prefer the way Nolan did fight scenes in Batman Begins. It was a risk and it made the fights extremely hard to watch when I was 10, but now that I have gotten around to reading a few Batman comics I kinda love the Dark Knight Trilogy fight scenes.

The theme of fear is incredibly strong in this film, and it's a real shame that in my first watchthrough I didn't understand it. It's worth pointing out that in The Dark Knight, the Joker comes much closer to succeeding at the League's goal (using fear to destroy Gotham) than the League ever did, and he did it with a few bombs and strategic kills, plus some unpredictability. It's really a fascinating parallel. I really hope that when you win The Dark Knight, you mention that the music and the film both build and build and build to a massive crescendo, where the stakes and the dramatic tension never, ever stop stacking until it all releases at the end.

My favorite comic book trilogy of all time. One thing I love about this trilogy is that it wasn't just dark for the sake of being dark. The tone fit with the themes of the films. It fit with the characters, and the stories Nolan wanted to tell. But it had plenty of humor, that worked, and more importantly, it had hope. That's what this Batman fought for. The hope for a better future. These weren't just great comic book films, they were also great films. Great films with well developed, multi-layered characters, fantastic dialogue, great performances from both main and supporting actors and amazing soundtracks. However, it's not flawless. While I don't think the hand to hand combat was TERRIBLE, it certainly could've been much better. And Rises is definitely the weakest film in the trilogy IMO. But what I love most is how Nolan took all these characters, put his own spin on them, and yet somehow, still stayed true to the core of the characters. That's why this trilogy was so special. It did its own thing and still remained faithful where it mattered. I wish DC could go back to being this great, in terms of their movies

Aaaaand this is why 'Gotham' is great. It took a lot of bits from this trilogy, and a bit from other sources, and melded them into something spectacular. Not making Bruce amazing from the beginning, having him live on the streets, paying more attention to people who aren't Batman (Alfred, Gordon, every villain), focuses on the world as a whole, and gives us believable reasons for most everything. So, thank you BB for giving us a reason to have another great superhero show!

Just my two cents, since I love this channel's positivity: Batman is such a difficult character to portray, his iconography is so much more well known than his personality, as opposed to Superman who's optimistic personality is a permanent piece of his character and shows up in different interpretations no matter how varied. Particularly, it seems, playing the duality of Batman is difficult. My gripe with a lot of actors in the role has been that they don't fit both the Playboy and the Batman. Christian Bale, to me (Batman voice aside) was a great Batman, but he didn't sell me on Bruce Wayne. And this is a consistent issue, George Clooney's famously awful Batman was poorly balanced by his more natural Playboy persona. This movie did it right, in that, they focused more on the Bat, because that's who we really care about. If we can't have both, we at least need the Bat. And what really excited me about Batfleck in BvS is that he seems to be playing both roles so much more seamlessly than I've ever seen. For all the flaws of that movie, I will forever love the first intro to Batfleck, he really sold me on the Dark Knight AND Bruce Wayne.

It's funny that you mention Batman as the World's Greatest Detective, because he really isn't here, and that ties in to my biggest problem with this movie. Let me start by saying I think this movie is incredible and - less Heath Ledger's performance - I think this was the best movie in the trilogy. However, I have to say that Christopher Nolan's Batman is a victim. As you said, every important lesson he learns, he's taught by his enemies. The thing is, that means he's never proactive. Everything he does, it's because someone (including Rachel) pushed him there. To me, this isn't as big a problem as the way Clark Kent was portrayed in Man of Steel. The Dark Knight trilogy still really works. I guess I just feel that these movies are more about their directors than about the characters, and maybe that's why I find the MCU so preferable.
@3Rayfire
@3Rayfire 5 жыл бұрын
While I disagree, I do understand. Batman as a character and a person truly is a victim, the difference is that he reacts to the circumstances in such an impactful way. In the Untold Legend of the Batman, the first Batman origin story I ever read, Joe Chill was killed by a mob of criminals when they realized that Batman existed as revenge on all criminals for what Chill did to Batman's parents. They killed him before he even was able to reveal his identity. The lack of the strong detective elements is one of the few weaknesses in the trilogy, but when everything else is so strong it's forgivable.

Still prefer Katie Holmes as Rachel, shes cuter. lol Plus actor changes makes me have to remind myself who they are until a few movies in. Like when Dumbledor's actor changed after the original died, took a little while to get used to the new actor because his portrayal was a bit different. With Rachel both actors only got one film with about equal screen time so they might as well have been separate characters. :P Would've been a lot sadder for me if it was still Katie as Rachel in Dark Knight.
