21:11 I’d just like to point out that in ASL, the way to sign someone’s name is the first letter of their name and a special gesture to describe them. In the first two movies, the other apes were shown to refer to Caesar by signing a C over their foreheads, because of his intelligence, but in this scene, Maurice signs a C over his heart instead ❤️

4:24 As a general rule of thumb, horses can carry a rider that is about 20% of their weight. So if Luca and the other gorillas weigh 350lbs, they'd need horses that weigh about 1750lbs. Luckily there is a breed that more than meets this requirement: the Shire Horse, which can weigh anywhere from 1870lbs to 2430lbs

14:42 these two moments really are incredibly deep, in that moment Nova restored Ceaser's faith in humanity and then his fellow apes restored his faith in himself, he always thought they would naturally follow the strong and couldn't show weakness, but even at his lowest, they still follow him, it's a beautiful way of showing just how far they have really come.

In the DVD commentary for War for the Planet of the Apes, co-Writer and Director Matt Reeves revealed that the filming of Caesar's final scene where he says goodbye to Maurice before he dies was extremely emotional for everybody involved. During filming, "pretty much everyone on the set" was weeping openly at the deeply touching acting of Andy Serkis and Karin Konoval. Serkis' mother & Reeves' father had both died during shooting.

I've always kinda wondered whether a lot of the appeal Maurice holds is due to the character being a big, strong, clever dude, who is portrayed by a little old grandmotherly black lady? The warmth, the gentleness definitely comes through in the movies. How much is due to the animators, how much is due to the mocap performance? Hard to say for sure. A pretty incredible achievement for all involved.

According to IMDB: The final shot was originally Caesar's eyes closing for the last time, than a cut to black. After discussing the scene with Andy Serkis; Matt Reeves and Serkis decided the audience needed to see Caesar actually die, with Maurice stroking his leg to comfort him as he died. In addition, Maurice's final speech was originally written as sign language. While filming, Reeves decided it would add emotional resonance to the scene if Maurice spoke the words. As it would be the first time in the trilogy that his character talked.

I saddens me that quite a few people missed out on these movies because they assumed they were just weird. I have many friends who never saw them believing them to not be serious movies, and that's such a shame because they are in fact amazing movies. Had the movies not been about apes the writing action and cinematography would easily carry it on its own, yet on top of that it has the unique hook of being about super realistic depictions of intelligent apes. Luckily most were able to look past it and they of course were pretty damn successful, but I honestly feel like they deserve even more.

I think it was combination of the two. Part of them was killed by cromagnones, part of them bred with them. Also, there is the fact that cromagnones were generaly more efficient hunters, which meant they managed to snag most of the prey. Note that I didn´t say "better", but "more efficient". While neanderthals were stronger and bulkier, they usualy preffered close combating the target (also made sense since they lived mostly in foresty areas of Europe), which led to higher risk of injury. Cromagnones used mostly ranged weapons, like spears, so they could get prey more easily. Also, their slimmer, not-so-big-and-bulky-boddies needed less energy, and thus less food. So we basicaly outcompeted them. Also, fun fact, every white person (or, basicaly, every person except the ones whose ancestors never left Africa since the dawn of humanity - and yes, those still exist, mainly in some african tribes) has at least SOME percentage of Neanderthal DNA.

I only now noticed that Bad Ape has the best grasp of the spoke word out of all the apes in three movies. All of his lines are verbal and unlike the other apes, you don’t get the sense that speaking hurts or is uncomfortable. The spoken word sounds natural to him and that’s pretty impressive. Also let’s not everrrrr gloss over how incredibly life like this film looks. It’s so easy to forget that you’re looking at a fully computer generated image top to bottom as opposed to real apes.

War is absolutely my favourite of the trilogy, and it's for something that you only touched on here. Nova's relationship with the apes. Going from travelling with them out of necessity to becoming invested in their plight, joining the salute and getting her name (honestly amazed you missed out the "brave?" "BRAVE!" exchange between her and Maurice) is kind of the reverse of the decision to kill Koba. Koba made himself Not-Ape, Nova made herself Ape. In a way it's also a chance to do what Will did for Caesar, but Caesar's not in the right state of mind for it and so Maurice has to get the acceptance started (because he's the best like that). I'm also just easily persuaded by stories where someone is accepted as they are.

Bad Ape is what Sméagol could’ve/wanted to be. Caesar and Koba are basically professor X and Magneto (and therefore MLK & Malcolm X figures) Woody Harrelson’s Colonel is effectively Bolivar trask. This trilogy has no right to be as good as it is but having such strong foundations in characters and allegories is exactly why it works so well

4:35 i always loved how evocative the score was of anakin's dark deeds from revenge of the sith - both tracks do an excellent job of hammering home just how brutal their respective scenes are and i don't think either scene would work as well as they do without the soundtrack

Speaking of Bay Area of the Apes, while the Simian Flu was definitely global, are there intelligent apes outside of North America? I can’t imagine Caesar’s crew crossed the Atlantic or Pacific.
@veronikamajerova4564
@veronikamajerova4564 3 ай бұрын
Maybe none of the apes did, but the original serum that was mass produced could have been shipped overseas, and when there was noone to maintain it (since, ya know, most of humanity was wiped out), the containers could become loose over time and start leaking the gas. Also, there is the fact that Simian flu is not only transferrable from ape to human, but also could be vice-versa. So if somebody took their kid in early stages of the sickness, when nobody knew exactly what it was and how dangerous it was, to a zoo or circus and the kid or parent sneezed at the ape exhibit...

Rocket really is the unsung hero (but in the video he gets his right wins) as he went from Caesar’s first enemy to his left hand man then a brother, who follows him since Caesar showed him mercy and lifted him up like the other apes. He’s just a loyal best bro 😎

I've always loved the dichotomy of Rocket and Koba, one of them was Caesars first rival and later became a trusted friend, the other one went from trusted friend to actual villain Also Apes holding guns will never not go hard, Luca with an FN FAL is probably my favorite

Apes Together Strong was such a great score that was sprinkled throughout the film that gave that light hearted note in such a war heavy movie. First starting when we’re introduced to Nova that was the human element that kept Cesar not going full hatred towards humans. To then being in such an impactful moment where she aided Cesar in the cage giving him the motivation to keep going strong with the rest of the Apes. Was hoping this was going to be talked about more but there’s so much to love about the film and the trilogy so it can be easy to look over but such an important piece of the puzzle. One of favorite scores from a movie and by the legendary Michael giacchino. I hope we get more soft light hearted scores like this in whatever his next soundtracks are.

This is my favourite series released in modern times. It's so well written, acted, the CGI is amazing, the film making and cinematography is beautiful as well as foreboding. It's such a magnifying glass on the human condition. There are some people who want the chaos, there are those of us with empathy and compassion but as a flip side to that coin that compassion and empathy can cause someone to loose their humanity. Ceasar is an amazing protagonist, he doesn't kill out of malace it's all to save his people. He looses his way and lets his emotions take over but he always comes back to the greater good of his race. Koba haunts him, was he right? Was he stronger, was he the one who understood more then Ceasar? Can humans be good as all he has seen of good humans was rare. It's brilliant story telling. I'll watch these over and over Its one of those series. Every single one is good in their own way. It's sorely missed in the average films of the 2020s. These films are the way you send a message not jamming it down people's throats. Connecting with characters who are flawed but ultimately do the right thing. Amazing films absolutely amazing.

I'd suggest The Thirteenth Warrior. It's my favorite Viking movie that got a lot of hate from critics back in the day. Maybe bc imdb existed past 9/11 but having an Arab see the Northmen wasn't in vogue. It's great
