*About the dining scene* It is often brought up that the scene is racist and portrays the Indian people in an inaccurate and racist way, however it's *not meant to portray Indian culture at all.* Let me explain: In the original Temple of Doom screenplay, both Indy and Cap. Lumbert comment about the food. Indy questions wether their hosts were trying to scare them away, but dismisses that possibility quickly because "A devout Hindu would never touch meat". This is a clue to what we later find out in the movie: *They are in the "Black sleep of the Kali Ma",* meaning everyone in that room except of Cap. Lumbert and maybe Chattar Lal (as he doesn't eat anything during the whole scene) is possessed. Also in an earlier scene which is still in the movie, Indy eats the food from the village, even if it's not very "appetizing", but doesn't during the dining scene (Again, because he knows nobody should be eating those things).

Fun facts: the actor who played the little boy "Short round", recently won the Oscar for best supporting actor in the movie "Everything, everywhere, all at once"! -They didn't have CGI, like we have today, so the minecart chase scene was done using Stopmotion animation. -This movie, Gremlins and a few others, were instrumental in creating the *PG13* rating. I saw this movie when I was 10 because my parents were with me. After the rating change, I had to wait a few years.

The filmmakers of this franchise always put in gross out scenes. That's why they had the nastiest stuff they could find for the dinner sequence. Also, at that time in the film's plot the palace was cursed by the evil Thuggee priest and his demonic forces.

The Indian government did indeed ban the production crew from filming in India because they found the script offensive since it depicts black magic in seeming relation to India itself so they had to film all of this in Sri Lanka. I don't know if it was dinner scene specifically I just think they found the whole theme of the film distasteful and were probably worried it would give the wrong impression to westerners if they obliged the material.

I've been eager for them to react to this one! I'm glad they called out the ridiculous aspects of how South Asia is portrayed, like the food, and I love that they recognized Amrish Puri right away. I had the opposite experience as an American--I grew up with this movie, and started watching Hindi cinema as an adult. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was one of the first that I watched. I recognized Amrish Puri immediately in the first second! Amitabh Bachchan had a cameo in another American film, The Great Gatsby, in 2013. The movie is a mixed bag, but his scene is great. Not really in the traditional sense though, they didn't use the term prequel back then, the only reason Lucas set this a year backwards was cos he didn't want to do Nazis a second time and if he'd gone another year into the future (the late 30s) then Nazis would've been more prevalent as the world started sliding into the lead up to WW2. A prequel is telling a precursor story to explain origins of characters usually, this isn't really a prequel cos it's just Indy on another adventure and apart from Short Round being with him there's nothing different here.

The reason Indian culture was displayed so inaccurately was because the Indiana Jones movies were based on old adventure stories from the 1930s that featured exotic locales like India or China in very exaggerated and bizarre ways because neither the writers nor the readers knew very much about those cultures and were trying to paint as entertaining a picture as possible for their readers, so many liberties were taken in their depictions, and George Lucas wished to capture the spirit of those stories, which is why you see such strange things in the movie

I became aware of Amrish Puri because of this movie. He appeared in a couple of other Hollywood films, but when I started watching Indian films in the early 2000s I was floored seeing Mr. Puri as Kajol's father in Diwale Dulhanya La Jayenge, a wonderful film. I was so used to him as the evil Mola Ram in this. I have since realized how they got so much of Indian culture wrong from what it really is. When I started watching Indian films, I started deep diving into the culture, the food, the spirituality, and other aspects. I have even picked up the odd bit of Hindi...so seeing Naved and Mansoor talking, I can understand about 10% of what they say...maybe 15%. Anyway...thank you for doing the Indiana Jones films!

amazing how many morons like you comment without reading first. 1. The Thuggee Cult existed and did human sacrifices to Kali with well over a million murders attributed to them. 2. The British did attempt to uncover and eradicate the cult which had their own language and fathers raised their sons into the cult. Hence not all of them got found. 3. Human sacrifices in particular are periodically reported in official Indian gov't publications. Usually worshippers of Kali identifying as Thuggee but also on the orders of Indian Holy Men 4. There are regions of India where tribes of cannibals exist and legally while the murder of people to consume them is outlawed, tourists are advised to not go into these regions without armed escorts. 5. Indian food from region to region varies so much that Indians from one region would considers the others food to be alien. 6. Indian culture is not the same from one region to another with differences being so extreme that a cultural misunderstanding can result in violence. 7.You have no Idea about the caste system and the evils that occurred under it. 8. the feast scene was to backup what had previously been said that an evil was at the palace. a deleted scene has Indy and the Brit officer discuss the meal and state no Hindu would eat those things especially a feast meant to celebrate their ancestors and traditions. 9. The Indians that worked and consulted on the film had no issues because they had an IQ higher than room temperature water. 10. Amrish Puri shaved his head for the role and liked the look, so he kept it for the rest of his life

The film depicts Indan food like this for comedy, mostly. Indiana Jones was inspired by 1940s serial adventures, which often took advantage of the ignorance of Americans of that era concerning the customs of foreign countries to depict them as 'backward', 'primative', or 'uncivialized'. We now recognize that type of depiction as culturally insensitive, but George Lucas, who was a fan of those old serial adventures, decided to include that depiction to make the film more authentic to what he was trying to accomplish. Of course, it could also be explained away as this food is part of the perverse customs of the evil cult that has taken over the palace.

I don't know if this was mentioned to you guys; i understand you saw raiders; this film is set 1 yr before raiders. What they call now a days a prequel. Willie unfortunately does alot of screaming; but she is believable as a fish out of water night club singer from america would be. and most of us would be probably very scared too. The dinner scene at the palace was over done to have the feel of the old 40's films (like Gunga din and others) alot of this film was inspired from Lucas's like of old films like gunga din etc. The film is darker also because George Lucas had been going through a divorce and it went really bad; spielberg had asked the writers to look into history of the era for a good villain and of course they embellished it. The Thuggee were real and did worship Kali ; but not like the manor in the film. The heart scene i feel they shouldn't of done, plus the fact later it gets darker. if you guys get bored look up the original script; it was way darker and interesting. Armish Puri; Spielberg wanted to get to play Mola Ram and he did! He did a great job, and Spielberg wanted him to be that scary.

Realize enjoy your reactions! 😁 (I apologize that I am not able to send more support at this time.😔) As I understand it, the gross-out dinner at the palace was not to depict standard/normal cuisine of the region. (I imagine that the meager offerings at the village are much closer to reality, under such drought/famine conditions.) It was meant to show the palace’s unexpected guests that there is nothing there for them, & it was merely an attempt to make them leave the evil place, that they had come to, before the next sunrise. When it didn’t work, that is when the assassin attacks Indy, in the bedroom. (At least that is how I see it.) I hope that you will get to watch all 5 of the Indiana Jones flicks, & that you will enjoy them all! Best to you! 😃

In the end Steven Spielberg was not thinking in a worldly way when he came up with this. He was firing for effect and was not concerned with casualties; which I regret that the religious interpretation was entirely fictitious -cartoonlike in fact. But then, he's shooting for old-time movie feel; a time when people were much less worldly, which is slightly counter-productive. He did not consider the Indian sensitivity to a sort of evil image being exploited. If there are dozens of popular Indian movies depicting positive images then forgive me. I don't watch movies like I used to.
