Intro to Dan Brubaker’s 20 Qur’anic Corrections - Quranic Corrections Episode 1

These talks are to help Christians who are working with Muslims, and to help Muslims deal with some of the problems with their foundations.
This particular series concerns the Qur’an, and whether it has been perfectly preserved. Back in 2014 Jay did a debate with Dr Shabir Ally in Toronto where he introduced from the front a number of corrections out of a total of 800 which had been found by Dr Dan Brubaker and included in his doctoral thesis.
Since that time that debate has been watched by over 500,000, and Muslims have responded by saying that Jay couldn’t be trusted because he doesn’t speak Arabic. That is why Al Fadi has joined with Jay in this series, as he is an Arab from Saudi Arabia, speaks not only modern standard Arabic, but speaks and works in Qur’anic Arabic, and is doing his doctoral research in this area of research concerning the earliest Qur’anic manuscripts.
Muslims have claimed that these corrections are nothing more than simple dialectical differences, or different readings, popularly known as
‘Ahruf’, or ‘Qira’at’.
Al Fadi quickly dispels this notion, noting that the corrections which we are referring to have nothing to do with dialectical differences, or differences with how someone might read it. These differences are consonantal differences, in other words, they are changes to the actual written text, known as ‘Rasm’ in Arabic. More about this will be explained later on in other episodes.
Muslims make 4 claims about their Arabic Qur’an:
1) It is un-created, or eternal (Surah 85:22)
2) It was sent down to one man, Muhammad in 22 years
3) It was compiled completely by Uthman in 652 AD
4) It has never changed in the last 1400 years
Jay and Al Fadi can’t confront the first two claims, but they can and plan to confront the last two claims, that it was compiled completely in 652 AD, and has never changed since that time.
Thus, they are asking 3 simple things of Muslims…to show them one complete manuscript of the Qur’an (114 Surahs), from the time of Uthman
(652 AD), which is unchanged (i.e. which corresponds exactly with our current 1924 ‘Hafs’ text).
What they are asking, and what they are doing is simply known as Textual Criticism, a test which every sacred or historical book has to pass (and the Qur’an, like the Bible is both). This is the same text which the Bible had to undergo back in the 1800s, but has passed with ‘flying colors’.
What’s more, no Christian would make the claim about their Bible that Muslims are now making about their Qur’an. We would never suggest that our Bible is eternal, nor uncreated, nor that it was sent down from heaven to one man (inspired by God, yes, but not ‘sent down’). We would, however, claim that the Bible was complete in its original form, and though we admit there have been changes in the Bible since the first century, we would be clear that what we have today, because of the enormous manuscript and textual trove at our disposal today, is pretty much 99.9% the same as that which was written down in the first century AD.
So, join us as we delve into the last two claims by Muslims concerning their Qur’an, and try to ascertain whether their Qur’an can be traced textually back to the time of Muhammad, or even Uthman, and whether the Qur’an they have today is exactly the same that which we can find in the earliest Qur’anic manuscripts; or whether, indeed, the Qur’an has been corrected or not over the intervening 1400 years.

As a muslim by birth I've been questioning Qur'an since my childhood from translations. I found so many contradictions and confusing things which I don't understand it. Uthman admitted that most of the early Quranic writings were destroyed, eaten by Aisha's goat. Also, Muhammad plagiarized previous man-made writings, claiming they were devine revelations given him through the angel Gabriel. Google search and see why all of these stories written by humans are in the Quran and deemed to be from Allah. The seven sleepers Surah Al-Kahf 9-26 was written by a bishop in the 2nd century. Stories written in the 3rd century by Egyptian author called "The infancy gospel" and none of these stories ever existed in the true Bible. Sura 21: 51-71 the Moshnah passage is found in Rabbah Genesis, Sura:22-26 & 23: 50 are from "the gospel of pseudo Matthew," and various extracts from the Bible.

Dear Dr. Brubaker, Sir, I am amazed by your wonderful lecture on the lacking of the Quran. I have always considered this book as a godly book, as taught by my parents and teachers. But various youtube discussions made by traditional belief thin. and I started doubting. But still I could not arrive at a decision. I was scared to read the original religious books which were too lengthy and difficult to understand. And I could not find the solution. In such a situation, a friend of mine gave me a book on Quran, well, its title was, Knowledge of Quran for the non-Muslims". It was a very small book, hardly 125 page or so and published by the Amazon.com. It was written by an Indian author, and the language used was extremely suitable for me. From the very beginning, the author told against religions, and in favor of atheism. Then he narrated why religions were created by the money hungry people. And it narrated various ways for doing the same. Then, it narrated those in case of Muslim's religion. And everything including why regimental type of five times prayer was introduced, how it in fact targeted to conquire the world in the name of a religion etc. turned crystal clear to me. The book helped me to understand numerous unsolved and difficultly answered questions about the Quran. Now when you say, the names of Allah was later added, many lines were erased and changed etc., I understand the reasons, because I now understand there was nothing miraculous or godly, but were the creations of the shrewd selfish-minded people. Hi Mr. Fadi, in terms of embryology, I have read Galen's work. It can be found by searing "AW Meyer Essays on History of Embryology Part 2". This was written by A.W. Meyer in 1932, Professor of Medicine at Standford School of Medicine. He was an embryologist and anatomist. If you look at the above essay, go to section "Viewpoints of Galen", 3rd paragraph: you will see Galen's 4 stages of embryology: 1. Geniture- the conceptus was white like semen; 2. Second stage- became a fetus without brain, liver or heart, 3. No name to this stage, but brain/liver/heart/external features formed, 4. Peur: prenatal- all organs formed and joints movable-this is late stage. This does not match with Quran stages @ 23.12-14.

In book Julia Boghner (Embryologist, The Developmental Approach to Human Embryology) , signaling of bone development occurs before muscles. Also, Galen's first stage is white like semen, in Quran it is leech and blood clot (Aqalah). That website that you referred is bogus. You can cover your ears and eyes brother, but you will be called to account by God.

Thanks to many scholars like Jay and Dan Gibson, we are now finding out that proto-Islam originated from a form of Judaizing Christianity known as Ebionitism. There is a book out on the origins of Islam, but unfortunately, it is only in French for now. I hope it soon gets translated into English. That's easy to answer. The Qur'an simply borrowed its science from other sources. The Bible predicted the Big Bang and the creation of the universe in Isaiah 55:9; Job 22:12 and Jeremiah 31:37. And the Embryology cycle used in the Qur'an was copied exactly from Galen, a Jewish embryologist, who wrote about the same four stages in the 2nd century, 500 years earlier. Much of the Qur'an is plagiarized, so this comes as no surprise.

@@solotrue45 The embryological cycle in the Qur'an has nothing to do with a microscope, since Galen speaks of the exact four stages, the zygote, followed by the chewed meat (the Qur'an's alaqa), followed by the bones, and then followed by the flesh. the problem is that Galen made a mistake, as the bones don't precede the flesh, and that mistake in incorporated into the Qur'an, as most modern embryologists now observe.

Dear brothers, Authenticity of Quran does not come from transcripts. It comes from hundreds of thousands of memorisers who preserved it through the fifteen centuries, passed from Muhammad(pbuh) till date. Sorry that this was not done to the holy book. How can an uncreated tablet that has existed eternally in heaven contains earthly events that were already recorded by humans here on earth. Events of two thousands years ago and even less were eternally on this tablet and then recently sent down for us to note? How can the Quran be claimed to be complete? Even if the modern Quran were 100% the same as the circa 650 Uthman Quran, we know from authentic hadith that quite a few chapters and verses were forgotten by the time Uthman got around to compiling it, and further that Uthman himself decided which verses to include and exclude. How can Allah allow people to forget? Can it really be claimed that Uthman had no personal or political prejudices that might have colored what he included in the Quran?

If someone sets up a Quran printing press...and makes some mistakes in the printing....does that mean the Quran has changed? No it doesn't, as the Quran is preserved as a whole with its means of preservation. If the original and preserved transmitted text is ACCESSIBLE and existing in other books and in hearts of people....millions of memorizers then obviously the Quran is still preserved. No one can change the Quran In the name of Allah, We praise Him, seek His help and ask for His forgiveness. Whoever Allah guides none can misguide, and who-ever He allows to fall astray, none can guide them aright. Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 5 Surah Al Maidah verse 13: Then they (the Jews) broke their covenant and because of this We deprived them of Our Mercy, and hardened their hearts. Now they have become so degenerate that they distort the words of the Scriptures so as to change their meanings completely. Allah says in the Holy Quran Chapter 4 Surah Nisaa verse 46: Of the Jews there are those who displace words from their (right) places and say: "We hear and we disobey"; and "Hear what is not heard": and "Ra`ina"; with a twist of their tongues and a slander to faith. If only they had said: "We hear and we obey"; and "Do hear"; and "Do look at us": it would have been better for them and more proper; but Allah hath cursed them for their unbelief; and but few of them will believe. A trick of the Jews was to twist words and expressions, so as to ridicule the most solemn teachings of Faith. Where they should have said, "We hear and we obey," they said aloud, "We hear," and whispered, "We disobey." Where they should have said respectfully, "We hear," they added in a whisper, "May you not hear," by way of ridicule. Where they claimed the attention of the Prophet, they used an ambiguous word apparently harmless, but in their intention disrespectful. "Raina" if used respectfully in the Arabic way, would have meant "Please attend to us." With a twist of their tongue, they suggested an insulting meaning, such as "O thou that takest us to pasture!" or in Hebrew, "Our bad one!" Similarly, the Bohras twist the pronunciation of the word like fansab to fansib, and il-yaaseen to aale-yaaseen, and try to give a different meaning to the actual words of the Quran. Another point to remember here is that as and when the Quran was being revealed, the scribes used to write down the exact Revelations and memorize the exact words accordingly. The original script in which the Quran was written is regarded as Kufi script, and this script did not have zabar/ zer etc on it. It was only many years after the compilation of the Quran in a Book form, that the zabar, zer, etc. were added for the benefit of the people who did not read Arabic as their first language. What the Bohra leadership has done, like the Jews, is tried to twist the actual pronunciation of the words, and tried to give arbitrary meanings to these words, to confuse and mislead the common people from the Truth. Allah cursed the Jews who did that, and deprived them of the guidance. May Allah have mercy on the Ummah of Islam and guide them to the Straight Path of Islam. Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allahs Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allah Alone Knows Best and He is the Only Source of Strength.

How could anyone question on authenticity of the Quranic verses.... When Allah on his own has mentioned in Qur'an that -- surely we ourself has sent down this exhortation and most surely we will be it's guardian (Quran chapter 15 verse-10) Now since God himself is claiming of being guardian of Qur'an so how could we say that it is not 100% same.. There is no doubt that Quranic dilects are different same as in every language but the context is the same. For example British write Grey and Americans write Gray but the context is the same that they both are talking about the color “Gray”. On the other hand, if you read two different versions of Bible, you gonna find out not only different context but also the different text there. So you better be worried about the book you are following weather that is preserved or not. Muslims recite the Quran in their daily 5 prayers without even looking at it.
