Missing Words In A Quran Manuscript

In the inaugural video of the Variant Quran channel, Dr. Brubaker introduces himself, talks about his decade-plus research into corrections and variants in early Quran manuscripts, and about the events of this week in which discussion about the preservation of the Quran has shifted.
Then, he presents a page from one of the Sanaa manuscripts that were discovered between the inner and outer domes of the Sanaa Mosque in Yemen in 1972, showing two post-production corrections on the page, and then (the main point) a third spot where three words (sab'in marratan fa- "seventy times and") that are present in Q9:80 in the Hafs Quran and in all Qurans today, are nowhere to be seen on this page. Not only were these words not written at the time of first production, but they were further not written in by the corrector who made the other two alterations on this page.
Dr. Brubaker continues to note that this verse is viable, both in grammar and in meaning, without the missing text.
Finally, he notes an interesting feature about the verse's content. Q 9:80 reads "It is the same whether or not you beg forgiveness for them, though you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and Allah does not guide the evil-doers." Dr. Brubaker points out the familiar account related in Matthew 18:21-22, which reads, "Then Peter came to Him and said, 'Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?' Jesus says to him, 'I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.'"
Dr. Brubaker suggests that presence of the concept of asking or needing forgiveness, alongside the notion of "seventy times" is interesting. The numbers seven and seventy are frequently occurring motifs in both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, but are not strong motifs in the Qurʾan.
Why did the first writer of this page not include the missing words? Why did the corrector not add them in? The possibility of a variant tradition, that both original scribe and corrector actually might have felt that the verse was correct without these words, may be considered as one potential explanation.

Hitting the core of it, it's very reminiscent of the christian position as well where they made claims which are unsubstantiated. I disagree, this is the worst thing to happen to Islam, simply because the reverence of the Quran come from people assuming it is the unchanged word of Allah.. people don’t think at all. You can not even say that there is only one current Quran ... there are dots, vowels and words that are not the same and that also change the meaning of the text, like in the Hafs Quran 98:6 where it says "Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures (al bareiyyati).", while in the Warsh Quran 98:6 it says the worst of the 'innocent' (al bare'ati) instead of the worst of 'creatures', so I would like to know, how is it possible for innocent people to also be the worst of creatures ? ... and do the Quran really send innocent non-muslims to the fire of Hell ?, or has the Quran been corrupted in this matter ? In the Hafs Quran 43:19 it says "and they make the angels, who are slaves (ibaadu) of the Beneficent, females" , while in the Rawh Quran 43:19 it does not say slaves (ibaadu) but in the presence (inda), so that it is not only a word that has changed but also the meaning of the text as well, because is it the angels who are slaves who become females ? or is it all angels who are in the presence of the Beneficent who become females ? ... in any case, it's proof that there is no such thing as an exactly preserved Quran on earth, and that has not changed over time... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGfEmISjpJqCisU

Halal Homer explain then why Jay Smith was able to gather some 24 different Quran’s, all with textual variations that didn’t align with each other and why Shabir Alli was forced to admit that there are various textual variants that ‘don’t affect the doctrine’. I noticed in that Qur'an manuscript Allah does not forgive even if you ask 70 times, exact opposite idea where Jesus says forgive 70 X 7. What's another way to say 'opposite Jesus'?

The Quran is diametrically opposed to the Bible. Even in the Hadiths, it is apparent that Muhammad/Allah is the anti-Christ. The Messiah’s heaven is Allah’s hell and vice versa. Notice that even in the Hadith, the Messiah is on par with Allah. Muslims fail to recognize that even their Hadith authors acknowledged Christ’s divinity.

@@user-ue2ck5gm8w Clearly your not Christian neither do you understand what the NT teaches, it teaches that Jesus is Gods Word who was with God and was God (John 1:1) - this means he pre-existed his human birth and in his pre-existance he was known as 'the angel of the lord' in the OT, this is whom Abraham and the prophets knew., so yes they knew Jesus but they called him 'the angel of the Lord' ..this angel in the OT is called God and identifies himself as God all over the Bible. Just like Jesus did again in the NT saying 'before Abraham was I AM' (John 8:58)

How about Stephan a Jew (and the first Christian martyr) who says it was Jesus who appeared to Moses (Acts 7:30-38/Exodus 3:2)...just because the prophets never say 'God is a trinity' does not mean they did not view him as one - all throughout the Bible they talk about the Father the Son and Holy Spirit. Any partners beside him is polytheism, even the Quran gets wrong what Christians believe it even says that Mary is the second person of the Godhead. Jesus did not pray to himself he prayed to his Father. The Son/Jesus has eternally existed with the Father and when he took on a created body via is his mother Mary he continued his relationship with the Father through prayer - this is nothing like pagan religions where they may have 3 gods or a pantheon but they are not one God. There is no such thing in history as one God who exists as 3 persons. What Christians say about Jesus is what you say about your Quran. You beleive Gods word became a book we say Gods word became a person Jesus and because he is Gods word he is eternal, so how can you say dont understand the trinity when you havent even dealt with the complete contradictory nature of your book which is both eternal in heaven and finite on earth?

✔️ *FOR THE MUSLIM - ALL 7 AHRUF ARE, AND HAVE BEEN "THE QURAN"...SO WHICHEVER ONE YOU HAPPEN TO HAVE AT HOME, IT IS "THE QURAN"...ALL TRACED BACK TO THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD.* *That being said, what is the Quran and what is meant by Ahruf?* ⁉️ *IS THE AHRUF A SECRET, IS IT TABOO?:* The fact that "Ahruf" is an Arabic term that was used by the Prophet Muhammad in his own lifetime clearly indicates that it is not a hidden secret, be reassured, that it is not a secret. It is an open study of academia in the Islamic world in relation to preservation and transmission of the Quran. It is a field within the Islamic sciences that helps explain what the Ahruf are and why they were introduced, all 7 of them. Ahruf means "readings," and since there were 7 Ahruf, it clearly indicates that there are variations between one Quran and another. However, these variations were also explained by the Prophet Muhammad...who better than him to explain the Ahrufs background? *MY OBJECTION:* My objection is what todays evangelists are doing with the science of Ahruf and totally distorting the picture and imposing upon "Ahruf" this new narrative as if a newly found secret. *HISTORICALLY:* Islamic history has always had this word. From the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad, this term "Ahruf" has been in usage. It has a thorough, written record dating back 1400+ years and it is a topic widely discussed. 📖 *SPECIALISED FIELD OF ISLAMIC SCIENCES:* However, since it is a specialised field, it is not a discussion in every layman's education, it is a discipline that requires time spent as in any educational field. 🔶🔶🔶 *A SIMPLE ANALOGY TO UNDERSTAND THIS POINT - ENGLISH DIALECTS ACROSS THE UK:* The different English dialects, words and terms used across UK; London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Scotland and Wales...each of these, although English speaking, arguably, have their own key differences, variations and peculiarities etc. ✔️ *SIMPLY EXPLAINED:* The Quran is a message from Allah, it was revealed "piecemeal" in the Qureshi dialect over 23 years. In order for the Quran message to be accessible to the other neighbouring Arab speaking communities in and around Medina, Allah allowed/authorised its reading in 7 different Ahruf (readings) to be able to facilitate the differences between each neighbouring Arab communities differences in dialect, terms and words. *TO EACH THEIR OWN:* To the Qureshi, they had their Ahruf (reading), and similarly, to each different Arab community they were given their own Ahruf, to cover the message being transferred, delivered and more importantly to be understood. *99.9% ARE THE SAME:* 99.9% of the body of Ahruf are the same, the 0.1% differences between each accounts for the variation in the other Arab speaking communities dialects, words, terms etc. *EACH WAS "AUTHORISED" AS AN "INDEPENDENT" QURAN:* The 7 Ahruf were all independently authorised by Allah and therefore taught by the Prophet Muhammad with the allowed differences in his own lifetime. 🔶🔶🔶 *WHATEVER THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD HIMSELF "AUTHORISED" AS A QURAN IS THEREFORE AN "AUTHORISED" QURAN...* Each of the 7 Ahruf were authorised by the Prophet Muhammad in his lifetime, and he, himself, taught the different Arab communities directly as per each Ahruf. *PURPOSE ACHIEVED:* The message of the Quran had to be understood by the neighbouring Arab communities in its fullness. In order for that to happen, it needed tailoring and so the 7 Ahruf were tailored for that individual neighbouring Arab community. So these 7 Ahruf helped to better assist those non-Quraishi speaking Arabs. ✔️ *CORE MESSAGE AND THEOLOGY:* The message, the theology, the law, and the rulings were not affected by any of these changes, instead it gave all these various tribes a common document with the same message, theology, law and rulings. ⚠️ *WHAT CHANGES?* The meaning of the sentences in ALL of these cases do not change. Only sensationalising, drumrolls and click-bait titles try to make it bigger than it is but it becomes an anti-climax once the viewer realises what is being presented by the presenter (it becomes apparently clear that they are charlatans with deception at the forefront to misguide people). I can appreciate honest academia work. As for disinformation and misinformation that I clearly find abhorrent, however, the likes of certain individuals are cashing in on people's vulnerabilities. None of what they say can stand up in academic circles. But on this platform YT, that caters for sensationalism, click-bait and entertainment, well the vulnerable audience is already there. *SYSTEM:* Whatever the system differences for each Ahruf, that system then consistently remains in that Ahruf (reading)...Think back to the analogy of different English dialects, terms and word usage (see whether a sentence 🤔 *AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE 0.1% CHANGE COULD LOOK LIKE:* Eg coming home, will be there shortly I'm coming home, I will be there shortly I'm gonna be home shortly Shortly I'll be home Going home (any of these variations gould be a legitimate "sentence structure" for a particular English audience, now imagine a Cockney, black country, Manc, scouse, etc having their own particularities about that sentence!?). Try a different sentence. *RECAPPED!!!* *THE AHRUF EXPLANATION:* Simply put, the 7 Ahruf were authorised readings of the Quran by the Prophet Muhammad in his "lifetime." All 7 Ahruf, are each, an independent "authorised" Quran reading. *IN SHORT:* The Prophet Muhammad lived in Mecca for the first thirteen years of his Prophethood. For the last ten years, he migrated to Medina (around 100+ other Meccans had also migrated to Medina...by the time of his death there will be over 10,000+ new Muslims, some with completely different languages). *MECCA MULTIPLE TRIBES:* In Mecca the different Arab tribes had a general, as well as varied dialects. *MECCA "QURESHI" DIALECT:* In Mecca, Prophet Muhammad's dialect was the "Qureshi" dialect, and the Quran was revealed over the full 23 years in the Qureshi dialect. *MEDINA 7 AHRUFS (READINGS):* Once in Medina, some 200 miles away, the now neighbouring Arab communities had different dialects, words and terms and so needed certain words to be translated for the Medina region Arabs. *IN THE FINAL YEARS BEFORE HIS DEATH...ALLAH GIVES PERMISSION FOR 7 AHRUF (EACH INDEPENDENTLY AN "AUTHORISED" QURAN):* The Prophet Muhammad asked Allah to grant permission for an ease in allowing these other tribes to be able to understand the message of the Quran too. Allah authorised it in this way by allowing those words particular to that tribe to be changed for that "new" community to now understand the message. The subsequent 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Ahruf (readings) came about because the "new communities" that he came to, in the Medina region and beyond, had different neighbouring Arab tribes with varying dialects and terms. In this way, Allah allowed changes that were subsequently known as the 7 Ahruf (readings) in total. The Qureshi Ahruf dialect/terms being the first, and the other 6 Ahruf dialect/terms catering for each of the other tribes that were at a distance from Medina. *WHOLE BODY OF COMPLETE WORK:* In each Ahruf, 99.9% of the words, text and message were all the same. As for the 0.1%, varied words, terms, pronunciations etc, these became specific to that particular Ahruf, and now that tribe could fully understand the message (each could choose to use any of the 7 Ahruf, that they deemed easy for them). Some companions subsequently learned more than one Ahruf. *WORD ORDER SWITCHED...SYNONYMS, ETC TO ASSIST THE LANGUAGE DIFFERENCE:* Word order appears in different European languages where verbs, nouns and adjectives are repositioned to make sense of a sentence from one language into another. Synonyms are used to give an additional description (these are simply the only things that happened with regards to the Ahruf). ✔️ *THEOLOGY, DOCTRINES, LAWS, RULINGS DIDN'T ALTER!!!*

So you are saying that because you found a error in one copy of the Quran that the Quran has been changed? Dr. Brubaker I assure you that even today there are copies of the Quran which have mistakes. It is a Muslim’s belief that the Quran will however be preserved. This means that that mistake will be eliminated in due time before impacting any individual, just like this mistake that you pointed out. In my study of the Quran, I have tried writing verses from memory and made mistakes. If someone finds those papers hundreds of years from now, does that mean that I altered the Quran?

According to koran allah created Adam when he had to create him and he struck his right shoulder, and there emitted from it white off springs as they are white ants. @Danial Alan Brubaker can you provide a chain of authenticity for that manuscript e.i. who wrote it? As you know in Islam any book written must contain with it a chain of transmission. For example if someone claims to have found a book written by alghazali we would have to authenticate it via a chain of transmission and this applies to All islamic books and there's many examples of this. We as muslims can disregard this manuscript until you can authenticate its author or authors.

And also a follow up if i may: would you say that if there are any similarlities to the codices in the hadith and tafsir books that are considered fabricated or very weak etc according to the methodology of the hadith scholars, that this should be taken as maybe mere coincidence or should this be taken as possible evidence and also cause a broader discussion as to whether the methodology of the hadith scholars is actually reliable? I ask this question because i recently read the work of the late scholar Shabeb Ahmed: "before orthodoxy" in which he analysed many narrations from the early Muslims about the Satanic verses incident. In his work, one part i found striking in particular was the section on Kab Al-Qurazi. The striking part was the fact that many of the people that the hadith scholars denounced and called liars all transmitted hadith from Kab that are hermeneutical identical and sometimes word for word identical in places.

Fascinating, that is such a good spot, both the missing words and Matthew connection. I suspect this represents a tradition that lacked the words. Otherwise 3 people (scribe and 2 correctors) would all have missed it. I guess it's possible the correctors saw insufficient room to add the missing words. Would be interesting whether or not there are any pages elsewhere where 2 or 3 word corrections have been squeezed in.
