Who is Dan Brubaker, & why is his book so damning? - Quranic Corrections Ep. 2

Back in 2018, Jay and Al Fadi delved into the subject of changes to the earliest Qur’anic texts, which caused quite a stir. Now, in 2019, they are delving into this subject once again, but zeroing in on a special book which has just been released, entitled: “Corrections in Early Qur’an Manuscripts”, written by Dr Daniel Alan Brubaker.
So, who is Dr Brubaker exactly? He is a scholar of early Qurʾanic manuscripts of the 7th-10th centuries AD, the earliest period of the book’s existence. He defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Intentional Changes in Qurʾan Manuscripts” and was awarded his PhD at Rice University in Houston in 2014.
Since then Dr Brubaker has continued his work researching corrections in early Qurans. To date, he has photographed and analyzed approximately 10,000 early Qurʾan manuscript folios, mostly in person, housed in institutions and libraries in Paris, St. Petersburg, Oxford, Cambridge, London, Dublin, Doha, Manama, Kuwait, Tashkent, and elsewhere.
Amongst those he has photographed are the six earliest manuscripts, which are found in Turkey (the Topkapi MS), Tashkent (the Samarkand MS), Sana’a (the Sana’a MS), London (the 2165 Ma’il MS), Paris (the Petropolitanus MS), and Egypt (the Husseini MS).
He was looking for around 7-8 corrections in any of these manuscripts in order to find out whether indeed the claim by Muslims was correct, that the Qur’an had never been changed, and that the Qur’an which we have in our hands today is exactly the same as that which is in heaven (see Surah 85:22), or that which was revealed to Muhammad between 610-632 AD, or even that which was finally written down by Uthman in 652 AD.
For Dan, this was only an academic exercise. For Jay and Al Fadi, it is much more, because their job is to take what the academics find and make it public, confronting the Muslims in public concerning their claims for textual fidelity. This is called ‘polemics’, the opposite of ‘apologetics’, the former going on the offensive, and the latter remaining on the defensive. Jay and Al Fadi’s responsibility, then, is to take the research of Dan and other academics and make it public, and that is what they are doing in these episodes, asking the question of whether the Qur’an was perfectly preserved, as Muslims claim.
Ironically, only in Islamic research are academics censored from going public with what they are researching, especially if it is critical of Islam, the Qur’an, or Muhammad, threatening those who dare go public by employing death threats and assassinations (i.e. Salman Rushdie, Tasleema Nasreen, Fazlur Rahman, etc…), or having them banned from universities by calling them ‘hate preachers’ or ‘Islamophobic’ (i.e. what happened to Jay in November in Hong Kong). This is why Jay and Al Fadi have to use KZbin to get this material out to the public.
Daniel Brubaker is the first to not only go to all of the museums and libraries physically, but to research each of the pages of all the earliest manuscripts and find the corrections. What’s more, though some of these corrections were known earlier, they have never been published. Thus, he is the first to go public and publish some of those he has found, and that is why Jay and Al Fadi are focusing on his book in this series.
In his first book Daniel has only offered 22 of the over 4,000 he has now discovered in these earliest Qur’anic manuscripts. He is not polemical and thus not interested in asking damaging questions, nor coming to conclusions on any of these corrections. Jay and Al Fadi, however, are interested in not only exposing these corrections, but in coming to conclusions concerning what this all means to the credibility of the Qur’an, and to the very foundations of Islam.
In studying early manuscripts there are three areas which researchers use; including:
1)Paleography (the study of the development of script styles which are used in manuscripts). Dr Francois Deroche is probably the best known for this area of study in Qur’anic manuscripts and has noted the differences between the early Ma’il (slanted) script and the later Kufic scripts.
2) Codicology (the study of the features of the page or book, as well as the writing material employed, or a study of the physical aspects of the codex itself). Areas here include the format of the page, the lines and ink used, and the illustrations as well as the bindings employed.
3) Radio-Carbon dating (the study of the degrading of the carbon from the skin of an animal, once it is dead). This is the most inexact of the three, because the span of years can be close to 100 years.

What I dislike about youtube is the view on this channel, is totally underrated. At least each video would yield 30-50k view considering quality of productions and consistency. It’s pretty inspiring to learn that many Muslims are now beginning to open their eyes and accept that the pile of studies showing the number of inconsistencies in their books is truly alarming. As an Arab Muslim who has read this book, I'm sorry to tell the non-Muslims, it doesn't say anything bad about the Quran or Islam. It is virtually impossible to change a tiny bit of the Quran in the modern era or even in the centuries before. His main goal is to prove that the Quran was changed not just in its early stages but over several hundreds of years to conform to the edition of the 1924 edition printed in Cairo. In doing so he and the people behind him are seeking to destroy the credibility of the Quran which Muslims have said has been preserved since its inception. What they are trying to say is that it wasn't preserved and accordingly Islam is false. This is no longer a matter of just some scribal mistakes which is why you have to read these books and understand the arguments within them. We are very lucky to have been blessed with Dr Tayyar Altikulac's response to this dastardly attack on the Quran.

@@BaSsGaZ Yes i have a copy of Dr Altikulac's book. Basically Dr Altikulac addresses every point Dr Brubaker brings up and more. He goes through each example one by one. He pretty much shows that in 6 or 7 of the other contemporary Quranic manuscripts none of the "corrections" that Dr Brubaker shows in one manuscripts is shown in all those manuscripts. This clearly confirms that these so-called "corrections" are essentially scribal mistakes. I'll try and scan it in. i'll let you know when its done and if you want a copy i'll email to you.

There are some 320 000 Arabic letters in the Quran not to mention the number of vowel and noun diacritical marks. In the scheme of relativity 800 scribal mistakes for a hand written book in ancient times is pretty low. As a percentage that is about a quarter of 1 per cent. There is a big difference between scribal mistakes and deliberate "corrections" to tie up to later edition in 1924 Cairo. Dr Brubaker's BS has not stood up to scrutiny by the expert in this field Dr Tayyar Altikulac. Now that is a "wow"!

We can read in the Koran that the template for the book (43:4) was made in heaven and handed down from there (17:105). That would mean there is just one version. If this is the case, I think the same argument must be allowable for the Bible. But this doesn’t help us much if want to trust and believe in what we read. In the Bible, we have issues such as the interpretation of 1 John 5:7 and the contradiction between 2 Samuel 24:1 and 1 Chronicles 21:1. So we can say the Bible came down from God through spirit as one version and was entered incorrectly in some versions that were written down. Can we say the same about the Koran? Let’s accept that it came down through Gabriel as exactly what was written in the ‘mother book’ in heaven. Do we have different interpretations and/or contradictions in the Koran? If there are, then there is a problem. If we are only dealing with the use of different words and phrases that say much the same thing, how much will that affect trust and belief in what is written?

Why you are not talking about the oral tradition where we have millions of Quran Hafith or Quran memorizal over 1400 years and most of them doesn’t know how to read or write Arabic. Why would a 9 years old in a village in Egypt or China or India or Nigeria momrized the all Quran the same way. You have to solve the oral tradition problem and why there are no oral variance even in the different Qraat. The oral tradition is what preserved Quran over 1400 years and literally millions and millions of Hafith scattered from Spain to China and through this oral tradition written manuscripts was always corrected because there were no copy machines or print productions. It is almost impossible for scriber not to make error specially if they are not Hafith or they don’t know the language which most of scriber are. The other interesting part is that oral tradition survived the Muslims civil wars was all the polorization and the claims of missing versus of Quran and missing all Quran like Quran Ali. There were much nastier claims about Quran variants made by Muslims scholars over the last 1400 years but none of those claims survived the tsunami of oral tradition with millions of momrizal of Quran across the earth over 1400 years.
