So I see the two most common "shapes" for circle hooks being the one on the left in the video and the two on the right in the video. What are the advantages of each shape and why would you use one over the other?

I know the rule of thumb is m / mh with fast action for inshore. When using circle hooks would you use the same type of rod?
@502austin82 жыл бұрын
I fish in the Kentucky river below some of the locks, I use 7foot medium heavy rods and only size 2000-4000 spinning reels. 20 lb test red Cajun line and size 5 or 6 mustard circle hooks. I let the fish really take the bait before setting the hook the little taps on the rod I let them, and just use my hand and feel the line, maybe give them 1 or 2 foot of slack. After that when the rod tip bends down again I give it 4 or 5 fast reels and a strong jerk. Works like a charm.

I am just getting back into fishing after a long dry spell and I gave all my tackle a few years ago to a friend. Now having to start over. I plan inshore saltwater fishing with fishbites or shrimp. I remember back in the day that long shank hooks were easier to remove from the fish but had good success with wide mouth hooks, not circle hooks. A friend called them French hooks, great on spotted trout or snook, since they had wide mouths. Can you help me to get my tackle selection. Maybe will try live Bait like minnows.

A very helpful video Joe which leads me to a question relative to fly tying .. Does Gamagatsu or Owner make these circle hooks in a longer shank size i.e. 2x,3x,4x etc for obvious reasons? Thank you!!

I do not recommend circle hooks for fly fishing... I tried it a while back and found that I missed a ton of strikes due to the fact that circle hooks need to have a slow hookset in order to find its way into the corner of the fish's mouth, and the fact that a fly is worked through the water with a mostly straight line that has very little stretch is not a good combination for getting a hookset with a circle hook.

I agree with your comment, but I didn’t make myself entirely clear ,sorry . I was referring to salt water fish 🐠 stripers, bluefish etc. You would have a greater hook coverage of the bait but the hook length might be a detriment and tend to bend with a big keepa LOL and torque potential.. Keep up the good work. Thank you 😊

Maybe. It depends on the species of fish. When I hook a 80 lb. Blue cat. I want a bigger hook ,personally. Happy tight lines

I don't choose circle hooks inshore for several reasons. Setting the hook is part of the fun of fishing. I don't gut hook fish using wide gap Kahle hooks, so why would I bother with circle hooks?

Everyone will have their own preference with hooks. Just wanted to show some considerations when choosing circle hook size. Thank you for the feedback!

What size of hook you recomend for trevally as they have very soft lips.
@koolaidkillerXD5 жыл бұрын
For fish with soft tissue, I would recommend a heavier/thicker wire hook. This will reduce the hook's ability to rip out by distributing the force across a larger surface area. It's similar to thin vs thick hypodermic needles, there is much more resistance with the thicker needle which is why it's usually more painful. The size of the hook itself is still dependant on bait as explained in the video.
