I've tied the same knot my whole life on everything I've ever tied on (line to line not included) and I've never lost a fish from a knot coming out, and I've caught a lot of fish, I don't even know what it's called either, trilene knot maybe. The best knot is the one you can tie blindfolded in a snowstorm and have complete confidence in. Good video, love your channel!

When replacing trebles on lures you may need to add weight to replace what you have removed for balance . This can be done by using Storm suspend strips (I think they are called in the states) also remember a sizes in singles are different to trebles. There are charts available out there to make the job easier. We also have a semi- circle hook here in UK, it’s slightly easier to get a worm on. 👍

Awesome video with a great positive message. If there is any little bit of information i can share is that switching out treble hooks is a great idea. I do a lot of bass fishing and i replace my spooks, rattle traps, rooster tails, and crankbaits with inline hooks. Hook up ratio is less but its worth it to be able to lip a bass with out getting hooked myself! Stay safe folks! Tight lines!

I remember the barbless hooks I used. Those are great to use on catch and release. Very challenging to keep the fish on during the fight. And of course much less pain and damage to the fish when removing the hook. Just use a plier and pinch the barb in to make your own barbless hook.

Nice to see someone speak something with good reasoning. I made the same choices with hooks many years ago, as well as a couple others... There is one thing with this video, & that is when replacing the trebles on a lure, the in-line hooks should be put on so that the point is towards the rear of the lure. when pulled through the water, lures with the point towards the back will simply bump over any obstacle, while they will snag into things when the point faces forward as you did in this video.

I'm going to replace the trebles on a bunch of my lures with barbless singles. It's mostly to protect the many undersized pike you catch here, whether you want to or not. For such fierce predators, pike are kind of delicate and their huge mouths are prone to really serious hook extraction problems. Also, I troll a bit in some weedy places, so singles shouldn't harvest so many weeds. I would rather miss a strike than kill a fish.

The other day I hooked a trout on a rooster tail with a treble hook. I got the fish with all 3 hooks on the upper and lower parts of its mouth and I felt horrible. Not a big fan of treble hooks either. I also didnt know about the circle hook. I feel dumb now lol cause I've been trying to set the hook instead of letting the fish run. I switched to circle hooks because I kept gut hooking fish even with my line tight and keeping my fishing pole in hand. I watched a video about gut hooked fish and that it's best to cut the hook because the fish will dispel it and live most of the time. I'm glad I watched this. I'm a very amateur fisherman so lately I've been doing some research on fishing tackle. Again thanks for the video!

Trebles are a necessary evil for soft baits like cheese, dough balls and such. Not that I target catfish that often but if I do I'll probably be using treble hooks. Also I use a lot of older lures for bass just because I inherited them, old lipless crankbaits, topwater plugs, old wooden rapalas, I leave the trebles on. For other rigs I do like to switch the lures to an inline hook especially since I got into saltwater fishing, and for surf/pier fishing its usually circle hooks or ringed live bait hooks for live lining.

For live/natural bait, im in agreement 100%. I dont exactly understand the need for treble hooks and they are very awkward to bait as well. J hooks and their variants are great for targeting very small fish since circle hooks dont run so small. Circle hooks i use for just about all of my bottom fishing situations where my target species has a mouth the size of a small bass or larger (depending on the bait size)

Good to know about that in-line hook for lures! I’ve always just clipped points or replaced with a standard j-hook, never knew there were hooks specifically for that purpose. Last time I used a treble was for catfishing and it left too big of a hole in its mouth. Trebles are okay for catch and cook but I now try to avoid using them for catch and release. Best ones I’ve found are regular worm hooks for bass, and j-hooks and circles for catfish. Another tip is to pinch the barb points down to make more of a “bump” shape than an actual barb for catch and release. Thanks for this vid man!
@mswen1983
@mswen1983 5 жыл бұрын
Fish will often swipe at certain lures like jerkbaits, topwaters, spinners, and other reaction baits. Using trebles and a "soft" rod can increase your hook-up ratio. You can minimize damage to the fish by removing the barbs, using appropriate sized hooks, and making sure you have the right gear to land and release the fish quickly. If you are after large and/or toothy fish, long-handled pliers or forceps are essential. Hook cutters (aka mini bolt cutters) can be used to quickly release fish that prove difficult to simply unhook. And make sure you have the appropriate gear to control the fish during the release, like a net, lip grip (some species should not be lifted by their jaw), and/or gloves. Long shank hooks have another use. Cricket hooks (long shank Aberdeen) are great for kids or other inexperienced anglers chasing panfish. These anglers have a tendency to hook fish deep, and the tiny mouths on most sunfish make it that much harder to remove the hook. Cricket hooks are harder for small fish to swallow and easier to remove without harming the fish even when they are in the fish's throat.

Just get pliers for trebles. Trebles don't gut hook & they usually stick right in the lip. If you are new to fishing don't be turned away by "danger" to the fish or yourself using them. I use them with 90% of the time for bass rarely screwing a fishes mouth. J hooks on the other hand have went straight through the eye or skull of many fish ive caught. Choosing hooks is more of an experience/preference & location thing. Like if you're fishing a grassy pond or a high concentration of seaweed trebles wouldn't be ideal.

I didn’t start switching all my trebles until I started fishing saltwater exclusively ... Hi, my name is Neville, and I'm from South Africa. I love watching your clips, especially the way in wich you catch Blue fish. Here in SA we call them Shad.

You been fishing for "years", hahaha I been fishing for 52 years now, I began when I was 10. That being said like you said many years were spent learning and often not helpful however even more recently (last few years have been great), I have been learning even more thanks to youtube and those like you!

My family doesn't practice catch and release we do catch and cook because what is the point of taking a poor fish a nd shoving a sharp hook into its lips and pull it out of the water for it to suffer just to throw it back and let someone else do the same thing to it

@@marcgigliello4142 yes, just like how we eat Bluegill, you just scale and gut them, and then deep fry them the bones are too small and soft to pose any threat

Growing up, we'd use the treble hook for grabbing sucker (carp) at the river. They were grouped in big pools so it was an easy and effective way to snag the 20 per person limit.

I hate hate hate treble hooks!!! 😂😂😂😂 They make no sense…. The Jig hook 🪝 is about to be my best friend I lived in Wa. State and fly fished but now in Alabama I got me a Jiggin’ pole and can’t wait to try that Jig head!!!! I tried fishing the Chatahooche with a wedding ring last weekend but the river was up 60’ and never got a cast off well one but it hung up!!! I can see the versatility of the Jiggin Poles!!! 100% effective

*They are very sharp **allabout.wiki/al6x** I would order one size bigger than other circle hooks as they are smaller than the same size eagle claw and other circle hooks.*

I agree if you're fishing for the sport treble hooks shouldn't be used, fishing for food is a different story.
