Hi!! i'm Pablo from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Thats not the way to prepare a mate! jajaja when you serve the mate never never move the bombilla!... you don't have make that hole inside the mate!.... we prepare mate this way: 1- warm up water around 75ºC never more than 80ºC 2- fill the mate with Yerba at 3/4 of the recipient 3- Tap the hole on top of the mate with your hand, and put the hole side down, and shake a few times and put the hole up. Try the yerba still at 45º angle... 4- when the water is hot, put a litle before you get in the bombilla, let this a few seconds to repose and then put the bombilla inside. 5- add more water and drink! don't move the bombilla for next round... when the sticks of the yerba float on water and this have no flavor(?) it's time to change all yerba of the mate and start over... Sorry for my bad english... when someone come to buenos aires, i invite you a good and taste mates! for free obviously! Saludos!

I would have to agree with Pablo. Being Uruguayan I have been around mate for my entire life. Yes there are different ways to prepare it and different ways of drinking it. There are different styles of bombillas. Some use a gourd, others a ceramic vessel I've seen metal mates. The yerba used in Uruguay is generally finer than that preferred in Argentina, however the one thing that is universal is that you never move the bombilla unless you know what you're doing. Only when you are halfway done with your mate do you re-adjust it to get the flavour from the yerba that has not been touched as yet. You do not move it as is done in this video.

Hey there! I have a problem with one of my gourds. There is a huge piece of the stem in the middle of the mate left, and I can't dig the bambilla under the MoM as you show it in this video. I don't have clogging with my technique, but I'm wondering if I should just wing it like I have been, or if I should try and carefully remove the part. I'm getting small yerba particles while I drink, though. I'm also trying to figure out if it's because I can't dig under the MoM like you do. I'd really appreciate some advice from anyone reading this!
@Circleofdrink2 жыл бұрын
You can try to carefully cut it away or it could naturally wear down over time. Or sometimes you just need to change gourds and get one without a large navel protruding in the center.

You can clean the inside of any bombilla by boiling it in water and/or using a pipe brush.

Great video! I'm curious, is it common to get a lot of the fine pieces of the yerba through the bombilla? I've steeping it like normal tea for a few weeks and finally got a bombilla to drink it in the more traditional method (Definitely more effective) But I'm still getting a lot of small particles through my bombilla, is it my bombilla? Or maybe technique? Or is this how it is meant to be drank?

Hi, I'm still new to drinking Yerba Mate from a gourd. Up until now, I drank my Yerba Mate by soaking the loose tea in a mug of hot water using a sock-like cotton filter, and I usually used about one or two teaspoon(s) of loose leaves. Seeing almost a fistful of tea being used in a gourd is very new to me. Can you tell me how many times that large amounts of Yerba Mate can be used (how many cycles / refills - in a gourd)? If it can last an entire day, then that's fine, but otherwise, it just looks wasteful to me. Thanks in advance! Loving the videos, very educational. :)
@Circleofdrink11 жыл бұрын
A general rule is to fill the gourd between 1/2 to 3/4 full. That's about 30 grams or so. Find our group on facebook to ask us all questions.

excellent pronunciation, my friend. It's the first time i listen somebody from the States saying "yerba" and "bombilla" the right way (y). In Argentina and Uruguay letters: Y (followed by a bowel) is read like the English "sh" sound Ll (which is a digraph, not to separate letters) is also read like the English "sh" sound. This is the first time I heard about this special preparation of Mate tea. I used to make my Mate simply like any other tea. How does it taste with this method? Is it smoky? Because I like smoky things and then I would like to try it myself
@Circleofdrink8 жыл бұрын
This method doesn't affect the taste of the yerba. If you like smoky mates, then the best thing to do is purchase smoky mates. Some people say, though, the traditional method concentrates the taste.

Im a mexican, so I dont really care about "being traditional" about drinking mate, in fact most of the times when I drink mate is something more similar to "boiled mate" even if I drink it in a gourd with a bombilla (my gourd is a stainless steel one) not a calabaza or squash mate gourd, but if you are really trying to teach people how to drink mate in the "traditional argentinian way" and using the expresion "gaucho mate" the "mate purist" from Argentina would kill you hahhahaha. Once the bombilla has entered the mate gourd, it doesnt move from there anymore, unless you are "rotating" the mate (dont know the right expresion in english), and you did some things in the wrong order. Other than that I really enjoyed your video, your yerba mate looks great, and it seems that you are really enjoying this beverage as many people around the world is. Btw very nice gourd and bombilla you have.

The step where you add room temp/cool water is unnecessary. It might slightly protect the first filling of hot water but it won't do more than that. Also, water that is heated to 170 degrees has been shown to extract the maximum amount of nutrients from the herb. It shouldn't be a science experiment every time you want to drink yerba mate. It should be simple otherwise it adds stress to your life instead of reducing stress.

@matbur816 жыл бұрын
Circle of Drink sorry, I didn't realise how critical my comment looked until I just read it back, I think the bomba thing depends on the mate tbh. The Uruguayan stuff can be moved easily with no problem, but Brazilian stuff (chimarrao) really sets around the bomba, so moving it from where it sets in isn't a good idea as it'll likely just block up. I'm not South American and self taught and that's just from my experience. 👍

Yup, that's right. But depending on which dialect you're using, it's pronounced several ways. I'm using the dialect of the Rio Plata region. More specifically, I'm using a "Porteño" dialect, spoken in certain areas of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Yeah when I listen to people naming the tool I hear all sort of strange things. Bomba with a hard B seems to be prevalent. Thanks! I'm new to this and I get a lot of "grit" up the bombilla with a gaucho mate. I suspect I might not be letting it sit long enough with cool water/warm water before adding the hot water? I even have an extra fine net on the end of my bombilla to help filter out the particulate.
