A unique, visually appealing, mentally challenging story. Versatile puzzles, unanswered questions, confusing clues and a disturbing psyche demand a lot from both the player and the protagonist, Walter Thompson.
Can you manage to make sense of it all? Should you persevere, there is a chance to find answers to your questions.
You wake up. You're disoriented. Your head hurts. Things seem surreal, yet familiar.
Your wife Martha and your daughter Dorie are not there. Why?
Looking for answers, you explore your environment and fragments of memories. On your journey you are repeatedly confronted with riddling tasks, driven by the desire to find out what's going on.

🤣 I can't think of many games featuring a circus in any capacity where anything good came of it. The circus angle is great though. I've recently watched a documentary about the decline of circuses and how many have whole families involved and the difficulties of them leaving behind everything they've ever known. Each individual processed it differently so there was this sort of sudden discord in a previously tight knit group. This game reminded me of that. It's a great premise with a lot of potential.

@@GangstaSparkleFairy Until you mentioned it, I'd never thought about the dynamics of multi-generational circus families being forced to leave the only world they've known. Talk about culture shock! It's interesting that different ways of coping lead to a fractured family unit. I suppose the changes were so radical and stressful that they, figuratively, blew the family apart. Sad.

As soon as strange things started happening, with the protagonist being a man with a family, I sort of sighed in annoyance. I'm sick of "bad dad" killed his family or whatever, therefore ensuring him to wander in Silent Hill copy number 1,000, beating around the bush of his sins for hours with no meaningful payoff except jump scares and half formed assets from the back end of Blender. This though? I like this. The implication of Martha (the mum) being super controlling and saying "Dorie's future is this and nothing more", when said daughter is clearly interested in making things, puzzles, and games like her dad? She's in her "own little world" when she's painting? Which means she is hard to talk to? How often is she painting to avoid speaking to him? Hmm... bad mum? I hope it's a bad mum. I am desperate for this to break the "bad dad" syndrome and for him to actually be a clueless, yet loving father who has to save his daughter from narcissistic, psycho mum.

That's a tired trope that's been done to death, and until some intrepid developer manages to think up an overlooked, novel approach to it, I will probably be instantly skeptical and unenthused whenever a game seems to be going in that direction. I too hope that this game offers something different in the end.

I mean the kid seems to love creating puzzles and games like her father and sketching… but the mom seems hellbent on Dorie being in the circus … even if she’s showing signs of interest in things outside of the circus. Seems like the mom is cold and removed from him and he’s the one making an effort and scheduling “family night” for weeks and she won’t cooperate. She so far seems pretty selfish and controlling… he seems kind but perhaps a bit clueless which isn’t his fault. Also, you’re insane if you think silent hill somehow started the “bad dad” trope in horror…. It’s a tale as old as time lmao literally before tv and video games were even in existence… this was common in horror writing. It’s a recycled horror trope that silent hill copied in itself lol it’s not anywhere close to some original theme or plot. I swear ppl are so weird about silent hill and resident evil as if they had breakout original ideas… when in reality they were following a trope from the jump that’s been a thing long before they were.

Wonderful video as always, Chris, but just a friendly little suggestion: a flashing lights warning may be necessary for later videos. The flashing tunnel towards the end of the demo drove my nearsightedness crazy, so I can imagine it might be uncomfortable for viewers with more severe photosensitivity conditions

Funhouses, carnivals and circuses always remind me of Strawberry Letter 23 by The Brothers Johnson that would always get played at the local fair. They're always supposed to be kiddie attractions but the teen and 20-something carnies always injected a bit of a mature slant to them that made it skewered somehow. Seems we have another "what did daddy do?" game here. Curious how the Tarot will fit in.
