Citation V: turbulence during landing. Cockpit view!

A visual approach and landing during turbulent conditions at Danbury's airport (KDXR). We could not use the runway 17 (into the wind) because of runway length limitations. This is a safe operation in the Citation V with a well trained pilot. ATC is recorded. Enjoy!

Unfortunately this is not an optical illusion, but an antenna just left of our final approach path... It is lit at night. We use it as a "glide slope" marker on night approaches. If you see the pole to the left at your level you are correct. Danbury is a challenging airport, but we all operate very safe here. That was really cool to see a landing from cockpit point of view especially during heavy cross winds. I have been watching as many landing,take off,and during turbulence videos as possible (and how pilots deal with it) to help overcome my long time fear of flying. I use to fly a lot as a kid and a few times thru my 20's but quit due to minor panic attacks. I'm now 44 and realizing I'm missing out on a lot in life if I'm not willing to fly and need to get over it ! I have a short flight planned for August 25th from Seatac to Oakland airport and back. Trying to prepare myself and by watching vids like this one really help. Thanks for sharing !

Just got back safely from my trip, Seatac to Oakland and back...Loved both flights. Smooth sailing,gorgeous breathtaking views. I was able to film take offs and landings. As previously mentioned, I was able to prepare myself mentally for flying by watching a lot of your videos, I did not flake out and leave the airport (due to my past phobia of flying) which is what I thought I would do at the last minute...Lol Anyway, I'm already planning another trip,this time to NYC. I'm watching soo many cockpit videos and turbulence videos because on my way back to Orlando yesterday, there was soo much turbulence on my flight. It was soo bad that i set my body in a position that if we die today we're just going to die. I said my prayers and turned out I was stressing for nothing! It lasted for about 8 minutes until we found clean air. The pilot apologize and after that everything returned to normal. I'm still shaking about it until now. I've never experienced anything like that! You've also handled that plane like a champ! Makes me wonder how you pilots even do it!

***** Thank you! In 99.9% of the cases turbulence is just uncomfortable and does not have any effect on flight safety. The airplanes are designed to handle a lot of turbulence - much more than we human beings. It is important to fasten your seat belt tight. I banged my head really hard on the ceiling. Passengers not wearing seat belts have been injured in big airliners by being town to the ceiling and then smash into the seats. Often with broken legs and major injuries. But it takes much more until an airplane breaks apart. Flying is the safest thing we can do. Thanks for watching my videos & happy landings, Guido

Naeday dont be they wont let you fly with inexperienced pilots they know what theyre doing. Always think that in the 1940’s planes were so much harder to control and those pilots could manage their landings very well :))

Thank you Alexander. KDXR was my home base, so we had to sail down a hill with a 6 degree path. That often triggers the GPWS. Normally I agree that this calls for an unstable approach and a go around. When you know the approach, it’s ok. Always captains landing there. Happy Landings, Guido

Is it Auto Pilot till what time... I mean at what time in this video is AP switched off and the plane flown manually?

This really depends on the situation. This autopilot has some limitation when it needs to be switched off, depending on the type of approach you fly. On an ILS approach (if I remember correctly) the autopilot can stay on until 180 ft above the ground. The reason is that the pilot needs time to react in case there is a malfunction of the autopilot. Aircraft with CAT III certification where the autopilot can stay on until touchdown have multiple autopilots and redundancy. Where I switch off the autopilot depends on the circumstances, I do it sometimes much earlier, to practice hand flying skills. Happy Landings, Guido
