Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the vid and give some feedback if you do another - for beginner's, be careful when switching between something super basic and something that requires experience (example, you give a good beginner tip to zoom out to look at where everything is to 'plan for the future' and a beginner would not know how to do that last part - not a big deal but it's something that contradicts/defeats the purpose of the tip since a beginner like myself really has no idea what to look for when zooming out etc.

What I find very useful is starting of with dirt roads, they're insanely cheap and insanely good for layouts, when you have a 2 unit gab between roads the dirt road fits exactly in the middle of the 2 roads, so if you lay a road that sticks out about 5-6 units and then add a small section of wider road at the end and then delete the dirt you get the exact middle (: Also, 3x3 with a dirt road gives you a 45% angle pretty neat :D

Man this is just perfect : a friend of mine just purchased the game, he instantly loved your videos, but still wanted more details about starting a city. You read his mind ! I'm linking this to him right now !

6:00 good hint to force the houses to zone smaller without having the roads quite so close together is to build the roads at a normal 8 square distance (or 9 square distance) and then run a pedestrian path lengthwise through the middle, and then a few short ones crossing that. Helps to increase pedestrian counts (i.e. fewer cars on the road, and more people using public transport) and helps to keep the intersections a little further apart to help what traffic does exist move more smoothly. The paths can also link with the paths already built into the parks that you lay in. (although most of the default parks are going to be far to big. so feel to change some roads into culdesacs to allow the larger parks to fit. (it also gives a realistic way to break up the boring grid patterns, without making it completely spaghetti.) :)

It's unusually fun to watch you play because you are so slow and methodical about your construction, and yet you're casual too. Plus your presentation voice is chill and soothing. It's a good youtube video voice. A lot youtubers are either monotone weirdos, or wanna game show hosts. Makes me wish i wasn't at work so i could start a new city and model after your non-grid system..

@eternalpixie24667 жыл бұрын
A little tip when splitting a large road into two with regards to good lane use, place your large road eight units back and your smaller roads four units apart, then use free form mode and link to end of smaller roads curving them one at a time into the large road. Swap the direction of the one way which would be wrong. Doing this changes the arrows from left (or right) turn into straight arrows which makes the vehicles continue to use both lanes, when it's a turn arrow they will swap to the inside lane and cause traffic to sometimes back up. Another great vid by the way, :) and I do intend to watch you stream live one day since I've watch you from your very beginnings in your other life ;)

@sirrliv7 жыл бұрын
Finally got around to checking out this tutorial and I quite like it. Starting a new city has always been hard for me, and hopefully this will be very useful when I next give it a try. One thing I've picked up from another tutorial that I want to run by you as an idea: Spacing roads 9 spaces apart (1 beyond the guide line) thus leaving a 1-space gap between zone-able spaces, which are 4 squares deep. This way, I can build pedestrian paths between the backsides of buildings, allowing greater freedom of movement for people and bikes without needing cars. Periodic crosspaths linking up to streets can help, especially at intersections with crosswalks, but it's not entirely necessary. Also optional is the apparently popular trend among modders of building elevated pedestrian paths. While these do look cool and allow paths to cross over roads via bridges (which can be very useful in high-traffic areas where you don't want cars being stopped by pedestrians), I've found that ground level paths can work just as well, especially in residential areas. Also, for those willing to brave the Workshop, look up various avenue/boulevard parks that have built-in pedestrian paths. These have proven wonderfully successful in my cities for separating the noise of main feeder roads from residential housing while also boosting building ratings and allowing that freedom of pedestrian movement. Best of all is if you can put them behind low-density commercial buildings built along said feeder road, adding that benefit of local shopping to the list of advantages. I now almost always build my residential districts with this plan in mind: paths between houses, avenue parks separating houses from shops and big roads, shops along main roads at the borders of residential neighborhoods.

These videos are always fun to watch, even if I never can reach the level of functionality that your cities have. But a funny thing happened to me another day, while I was building island-based city, like in Batman Arkham Knight, which I appropriately named Gotham. I landscaped a small island at the bay between two major islands, just have a place to put the statue of liberty. But accidentally it was at middle of the route where cruise ships travel. So whenever cruise ship arrives to harbor, it will travel across the little island that is on its path :)

This helped out a lot with making my first successful city. I played blind with my first 3 cities and they all went to hell. Started up my next one on a different map that what you used in this guide but followed the road set up. Just you mentioning to keep an eye on the green, blue, yellow bars for the city's need of residential, commercial and industry buildings helped out a lot. I still need to work on my traffic management though since my city has gotten bigger but I really only made one way to get to any part of the city. With the city getting larger too I started running out of raw materials for industry, so I need to start expanding into new territory I think. I basically stayed in my one square of territory until I couldn't fit anything else into it. I'm about 8 hours into this city now and it has stayed profitable and never went into the negatives. Still a lot of other stuff I need to get right but trying to figure out a lot of management stuff on my own and it's mostly working out for now. Thanks for the guide, it helped a lot! P.S. has anyone ever told you you kind of sound like Criken?

Hi.. I just started a new game and trying out something you have been doing in this game... Going from 2 smaller roads to one large road.... NOW... I was using a ONE WAY road... Something I did noticed.. In order to get the direction you want to the traffic to drive (arrows).... When you change the starting point of that road, the direction is changing accordingly.. This could save you from having to adjust/upgrade the road later... Ex. You want the traffic to drive from left to right... When you build the ONE WAY road from left to right, the direction is already correct. Same goes from right to left... When you build your road from right to left, the arrows already point in the correct direction
