No one living in Carlin bought into the sabotage BS. SP had been doing a good job of union busting along their lines for years and the MOW crews were very often illegals who would work cheaper than the locals but they also did substandard work. Palisade Canyon was notorious for derailments of freight trains on the SP side of things. When the City of SF derailed it shocked a lot of people but it surprised no one. Tools being found close to the site means nothing-I fish the Humboldt on a regular basis and find all the tools and pieces of iron anyone could think of. The SP were complete slobs and have left their junk scattered everywhere. So there was no sabotage, just a piss poor maintenance record, a train driver with a lead foot, an FBI agent trying to make a name for himself, and a railroad that didn't want to get sued.
@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren

Very interesting. So that could mean the rail that was found to be moved 40ft inward was either deferred mantience or shifted by the wreck because the track bed was mush. Then again that does explain why SP was complaining about a newsman taking photographs that "made the wreck look worse that it was" while I know news agencies are notorious for that to sell a story (hence their piss poor weather reports) a wreck like this? yeah you can't make it look more worse than what you see there the only way to make it look more horrifying is seeing it for yourself in person. Thank you for sharing.

My theory is this: The tracks were sabotaged by a western pacific worker. At the time SP & the WP were sworn enemies, and a track maintenance worker from the WP could have snuck to the Southern Pacific tracks and sabotaged it while he was supposed to be working on the nearby WP tracks. A maintenance worker would obviously have quick and easy access to the tools needed to move the rail inward and remove the spikes. He would have also made it look like an SP worker did it to hit the espee’s reputation. It would have put the SP tracks out of service, making them loose money, and the WP tracks would be used instead, making them gain money. But he probably meant to derail a freight train, and when he saw that the city of San Francisco had derailed and many were dead, he went into hiding in the fear of getting caught and facing life in prison/execution.

I love that you put actual, non-recreated, and Licensed 30s music in here at the beginning. Not too many people are actually brave enough to do that for whatever reason. Also you didn't just slap any song you found either, this is a very obscure and rare version of an already mostly unknown 1931 song that didn't even chart It fit the mood perfectly. Great choice. As for the video itself, its your usual great style. I remember seeing in a Modern Marvels documentary that they arrested someone for the sabotage.

Why does people's ignorance of the true cause of an event make them think that there is some "mystery" about it ? Anyone who was really honest with himself would need to admit that there are many things about which he is ignorant, and there is nothing "mysterious" at all about ignorance. The most rational explanation here is that someone in the desolate Nevada desert thought that it would be fun to derail a train and actually got away with it. It is sad that such people exist, but there is nothing "mysterious" about it at all.

I was an engineer, recently retired after 40 years on the job. We've all gone a few mph over the speed limit to make up time but we know where we can do that. We know where the track is a little rough and where the tighter curves are but 30 mph over is ridiculous. If the track really was tampered with, the accident would probably still have happened but the damage would not have been as bad. If the track was OK and excessive speed was the cause and the company covered it up and laid the blame on a person that didn't exist, both they and the engineer know they are to blame. The company for telling him to speed (if they did, or at least turning a blind eye to it if they knew it was going on) and him for doing it. Of course, this happened long before the data loggers we have today or even the Hassler tapes we had when I was new on the job.

So, the track moved over 4" after the locomotives passed over that part of the track. This would more likely indicate poor track maintenance than sabotage, otherwise the locomotives would have also derailed. Once the weight of the locomotives came off the rail it bounced back up pulling the remaining spikes out and shifted.

And to think I was going to do it. Can't wait! Edit: Dangit! I missed the premiere! Oh well. Edit 2:I have a theroy: the train was sabotaged by a worker from a steam engine builder(we'll use Baldwin for this) to then later make a propaganda theroy blaming the SP using the speeding theroy, maybe planning to have it seem that the locomotive had issues with its brakes, so that Baldwin could secure it's industry from dieselization. The loco works would easily have access to trackwork equipment to sabotage the track. Of course, this plan would backfire when the leading engine did not derail.

It was speed pure and simple, covered up by SP. Track sections back then were 40 feet long and weighed 50 lbs per foot, bolted to each next section of track with two steel plates and two-four bolts. Tracks were spiked down to each sleeper(wood tie) by 2-4 spikes through a plate on either side of track, 4 were required but many used only 3 spikes in an alternating pattern of 1-3,3-1,1-3 to save money, done even today on old track sections. There is no way a track could be moved 4” and the passing engine can clear the 40 foot gap yet stay on the following rail in a curve for another 1000 feet, let alone if the track was perfectly straight. The track was weakened by previous trains and likely no checked by the railroad as often as required. A train going 60mph would not have put as much stress on the outer rail as a train doing 90 mph. The lead engine started the failure, followed by the B units pushing the rail further out and detailing down the embankment pulling the lighter passenger cars with them while taking out the bridge along the way. Only way for the lead engine to remain upright and on track in a curve. Tools in river could have been dropped accidentally off bridge in years prior, many people couldn’t swim back then and who would want to dive into the water in an isolated area to get a tool? It would have taken 4-8 workers more than two hours to move the 2000 pound rail let alone get out to the bridge and away from it before the train passed. They would have had to use a self powered rail car to get there and it would have to be reported it would be the easiest way.

The sabotage could have been done by more than one man and they could have easily moved the rail with a horse or horses but that of course if it was sabotage. If they spun a sabotage lie back then to cover their asses with insurance companies and angry remaining family members with lawyers looking to sue for wrongful death then yeah the corporate rail executives of that time probably lied to cover that the crash was caused by speed.

Both of you are missing the point, how does a 140 ton engine clear a 40 foot gap in the rail going 90 mph in a slight curve then re-rail itself and travel 1000 foot before stopping? The video says the rail was moved 4 inches out before the train passed. The engine would immediately drop into the gravel and ties never to re-rail itself.
@Wildstar40
@Wildstar40 5 жыл бұрын
@@allanadam4553 Maybe you are missing the point. Maybe the forward engine did derail and this was all a elaborate cover up designed to baffle and twist the truth into further obscurity but it was so long ago and it really no longer matters now since all who were truly responsible have long been dead. Personally I do believe it crashed due to speed because that is the simplest and most likely reason but back then some shit heel decided to hide the truth to save money.

Good production. One minor detail, This transcontinental east-west rail traffic stopped in Oakland. Across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco. So you might consider editing where you said that the train stopped "at San Francisco". Granted at one time there were rails crossing the Bay Bridge. These however were probably local rails. Not cross country.

"Embarcadido"? LOL. "Presido"? How about the Presidio. It's the Embarcadero, the reclaimed land waterfront near the Ferry Building and piers in SF. After all the train is named for that city and would use landmarks in existence in the 1930's to name the passenger consist.. This video is a fine introduction to a wreck many of us are learning about for the first time.

It looks to me like the train derailed to being over speed. If it was sabotage, wouldn’t the power also have derailed?
@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren

Depends on how bad the damage is. The Palo Verde accident was identical where the power held on to the rails due to their weight but the coaches derailed. If it was overspeed the locomotives would fly off the bridge and be on their side. By the way the power did derail on this train (The B units are off the track but the A unit stayed on)

The rail itself didn't nescicarially need to be manually moved too much by the sabatour to cause the derailment as it occurred. All that they needed to do was pull enough spikes to allow the track to move, maybe move it off the tie plate and bypass the track circuit. The heavy weight of the lead locomotive would both help keep it on the track and help cause the track to move when it's weight is nolonger on the free section. Ever watch how much a track can move up and down as a train moves over it at a slower speed? Now imagine that including side to side movement and at a high speed.

Theory. Track moved 4" on a curve and tools in the river = sabotage. How about the tools were dropped when they built the line/ did maintenance and the track movement was caused by inertia. To much speed and the spikes were weakened enough after the Engine had passed?

A great video, just a couple pronunciation quibbles. Mission Dolores is pronounced DUH-LAWR-IS. Presidio is pronounced PRI-SID-EE-OH by english speakers. Embarcadero is pronounced EM-BAHR-KUH-DAIR-OH. All are place names in San Francisco. A good resource for checking pronunciation of unfamiliar words is Dictionary.com which is where I got the ones used above.

@@JR1300r Yes, English speakers do have a variety of local accents that alter their pronunciation of many words. I should have pointed out in my original comment that, in addition to being place names around San Francisco the examples I cited all come from Spanish and their proper pronunciation reflects their origins, since as place names there really is only one correct way to pronounce them - the way the locals do. Thus if one insists on pronouncing Tijuana as TIH-JAWN-AH or Monterrey as MAHN-TERRY no one is likely to know what you are talking about. Of course there are exceptions to this - for most English speakers the capital of France is PAHR-ISS even though the locals call it PAH-REE. But in general it helps to stick with the "correct" version - salted with a bit of your own accent. 'Right, mate!

Read about this accident/sabotage. There was a "suspect" that could not be ruled out, but also could not be proven to be the guilty party. As I recall, this person was an employee. The SP brought in another employee to work with this person. A friendship developed between the two. However, the alleged saboteur never made incriminating remarks.

That must be why many sources say SP suggested it was a disgruntled worker. Others say it was the railroad covering up for shoddy practices such as the train speeding. Sadly we'll never know.
