@@alohatigers1199 So as a designer (whether architect, planner, graphic designer, product designer, UX etc), you have a natural tendency to fall into the trap of wanting to design something you find to be exciting and remarkable to the point of impractical and even self-indulgent (happens all the time). A grid is a limitation or restriction that forces the designer to ground themselves and have to work and design that can be utilized by and for real people in real world situations. It makes you have more pragmatic decisions rather than one built solely on just aesthetics or even selfishness. Really good designers know how to work with those limitations to create great-looking designs that fulfill their intended goal or purpose well. Hope that helps :D

I believe the issue with the underpass around 4:54 is that it's a highway ramp with a much higher speed limit than the surrounding roads, so sims try to use it to bypass the roundabout to make a left turn. If you were to change it all to a local road, I bet they'd stop taking that weird route entirely. It's a little surprising, though, since it doesn't look like Slingshot Underpass would be faster given how long it is compared to the other roads, on top of the fact that you have to drive part of the arterial too. But I've had this come up a few times when building elements of an intersection with highway roads and others with arterials and slower roads. Sometimes sims will prefer the highway parts even if the route they're taking is blatantly stupid (e.g., going across 2 ramps and a roundabout just to return to the arterial, rather than simply staying on it), because it's marginally faster. Probably the case here.
@ulysseslee95413 жыл бұрын
that underpass is useless I think. if u want to make faster for the traffic-flow, only just an straight underpass cross the roundabout will do a good job, even just a 2-lane-2-way road.

You're right about that. The main issue was the lack of connectivity and the DDI only really working due to a couple of tunnels and ramps. I realized after a while of toying with it that I'd have to fairly significantly reconstruct the highway network to get it working and didn't want to get too sidetracked on that. Honestly, probably should have dropped the highway into the ground or raised it up and made the connections

I think that while there are ways to transition into medium looking density and mixed uses (With and without mods), one of the major contentions I have is that the game should have been shipped or by this point, patched with, the ability to have medium density and mixed use zoning. Not sure why such a useful feature that was in city builders since the 90s was suddenly "too difficult" to implement and has been for the better part of the decade this game has been out.

I'm also impressed, that despite the large transportation budget, the city coffers were full and the income was quite healthy. Also, whether one would agree with the location of any particular district or neighborhood, they all looked like they belonged and it was planned. Nothing looked like it was just dropped in to fill a void.

Excellent video. One of the best I've seen regarding Skylines. What I love is that it highlights how (and I imagine we've all fallen for this trap) is that we can get too obsessed with using assets, making our cities look attractive or realistic and can easily lose sight of it being a living space that has to function on many levels. I also think, in a strange way, this is as much a story-based game as any other. Not a story presented to us, like a typical single player campaign, but essentially hundreds throughout the virtual space that are individual to all our cities, and detail why and how any of the content within them is there and why it's situated where it is. I'm very conscious throughout playing that everything is logical, and importantly that everywhere would be a decent, attractive and pleasant place to live if it were real. As such I'm obsessed with trees and parks; although I have another mental block in that I'm struggling to overcome leaving breathing space, open areas between populated areas. I'm currently trying to improve my understanding of, and the function of the train system. I find buses and underground really easy, logical and simple to implement. I could happily spend all my time working on bus routes and underground systems for everyone's maps. Trains however feel like a mental stumbling block to me. I feel most people use far too many trains/railways. I understand they can look great and can play an important part in making a city feel legitimate and realistic, but I think they're often overused. While on the subject of city building mental blocks; I am constantly frustrated with my lack of care and consideration, implementation and use of pathways!!! For a game people claim is 'chill' I find this game more stressful and frustrating than almost any other (except when I'm doing my favourite thing; placing trees - of which I think ninety five percent of Skyline cities don't have anywhere enough to be even remotely 'realistic'). The best tip I think all Skylines video content creators from what I've seen don't stress enough is the importance of researching and referencing videos, maps, apps, etc of real cities. The world already has every solution to any issue we'll ever hit in this game, but I'm not sure enough of us (and I'm absolutely guilty of this) don't fully take advantage of the references that are available. A tip I would give regarding public transport is, as alluded to in the video, to consider it in the same way you would the road network; so that everyone has a quick/short access to a bus or underground, which via a couple of changes could have them travel to the other side of the map, or any other part of the city with ease. For example, the outter stops on a bus network should either share or be extremely close to the outter bus stop for the next district. I also think there's a lot of benefit, and pleasure, from following buses and really seeing how well the system is functioning.

25:18 - loops in the CBD or centre of the city make sense, London has one and it loops around the core of the city. The issue is it’s not a closed loop, other lines interact with the loop which is where your passenger volume comes from (transit). Got some funky transport going on in this city for sure, then again transport is always difficult, in all my builds rail is the starting point of my build as you don’t want to have to knock stuff down later.

I would love to see you review my first city. I'm not an engineer, but I do feel I've created an engineer's city. It's got a good dose of OCD and Rube Goldberg going on. I've put a ton of work into the transit and have something like 20k riders per week. We have a big over-road metro system complete with Chicago-style loop hub. 2 of our lines use 720-pax trains and absolutely require them. The road system is a grid to end all grids, which I guess is unfashionable with city enthusiasts, but I personally love the orderly nature of it. And seeing as I hail from Oregon, we have an unreasonable amount of very large trees.

When you see cars use interchanges {or the example you showed with the roundabout) to essentially turn around, it's usually caused by one of two things: 1) a vehicle cannot get to the opposite side of the road from the direction it's coming from or 2) dummy traffic. If they vehicle's destination is located on the map, turning around is often caused by improper use of one way roads and roads with medians. Dummy traffic is the games sending traffic from one map edge to another. The cars get off the highway and just meander through your city for a bit and then get back on the highway. I think you can turn this off using mods like 'Optimised Outside Connections'.

I understand where you are coming from for the critique about the lower density residential and abruptly having the skyscrapers. But...I can say that this happens more often than you might think. My old neighborhood in White Plains (NY), just outside of downtown, had this type of configuration. You had low to medium density residential. These are mostly 2 story, single family homes on both flat and hilly terrain. But you can go out to the edge of the neighborhood and get a clean line of sight to downtown. In between, are commercial buildings typically 1 or 2 stories. You are going from 2 stories to 15+ story buildings with nothing in between - not much unlike what you were pointing out during your review. My point here is that maybe you should consider, just a little bit, some realism where not all locations follow the gradual increase in stories from the residential neighborhood to downtown. Regardless, I enjoyed the video. I love watching a real city planner giving his critique of a C:S city. I'm hoping to submit one of mine in the near future and we'll see what you think.

Overall, it looks like this city was built less for functionality and more for aesthetics, which honestly, is what I'd expect from an architect - builder. However, I'm not throwing too many stones from MY glass house - my first road network in Storm City was a catastrophe. Transit was better - it got a lot of usage - but it also had giant holes which created a ton of bottlenecks in traffic. I'm currently rebuilding a lot of it to make the roads/transit better, in part from what I learned from City Planner. :-) I'm tempted to submit (when it is finally done) Storm City to this, but it's designed with such a different paradigm I'm not sure it'd fit!

For the Metro & railway system problems, mainly both system need to be build in network & better to have lots of interchange station, so that citizens can reach everywhere of your city, point-2-point routes are not good for this, if u want point-2-point, y not build taxi station, much cost lower. XDD 2nd, very small ring route is so no good for Metro, say the 24:38's Suburb as example, the blue inner suburb ring, it is useless. U can build the metro along the main road(video's East-west & North-South direction) that connected the roundabout & serve the whole area. For the buses issue at the same area, u can rearrange the routes to serve boundary streets that too far away from the metro & have a terminus at the Central plaza/landmark. For me, due to Double-decker Lover & a Hong Kong CSL player, I love to using the double decker bus fleet to do Expressway bus routes services & very late to have Metro. I build the Metro mostly reaching 100000-120000 population. In conclusion, Public Transport in game better build it massively & well connected. So, u need to think more about how your railway goes at the beginning if u want it.

But if there's one thing that triggers me in this game, it's when people use tunnels to hide their screw-ups. I'll grant that 24 years as a professional driver gives me unique insight to how roads work. But I really don't think it's that hard to grasp. If you need to put a tunnel under half your city, you have a problem. I recently subscribed to a save that has the absolute worst network and zoning layout I've ever seen in a working city. I don't even know how it was working, to be honest. I've discovered I have much more fun fixing cities than waiting for them to grow.

Maybe the Green cities homes by the Petroleum refinery were intended as local housing for the refinery employees?

You can see that this was built by an architect. He/She (don't know) allowed buildings to take up S P A C E ... That is something that even I don't really do (Biffa neither :-) ). Now I see that it really is: less is more. Especially those at 29:05 I really need to make a city now! :-)

REEEEEEEE: the entire world of Cities: Skylines is based on the dimensions of a “flat plane”, even though the scale of the maps would have to account for curvature on a “globe”. I’m not a “Flat Earther”, but I am while playing this game. 😂

I have a city named San Rico, I guess he uses default name too haha. Best city I have so far, 300k population & 85% traffic. But maybe 5x less beautiful than this one lol
