Our last Alaska walk takes place at Alyeska Resort. It's a ski resort and mountain in Girdwood, AK which is about 45 minutes from Anchorage with great views of the Turnagain Arm and from the top of which you can get great views of the Bore Tide coming in. I'm not sure how people ski this mountain. Theirs no way I could but I think there are some gentler slopes on another part of the mountain. We had a bit of rain as we start at the top of the Gondola station, walk through the dining area, and take a minute to actually find the trail. Then it's a STEEP walk down to the Alyeska resort hotel. I hope you enjoy our virtual treadmill walk down the mountain all the great views up the valley. -H

Alyeska Resort is a ski resort in the Girdwood area of Anchorage, Alaska, approximately 30 miles (44 km) from downtown Anchorage. Mount Alyeska is part of the Chugach mountain range and the Alyeska Resort is the largest ski area in the state. It includes the mountaintop Mt. Alyeska Roundhouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
he Alyeska Ski Corporation was founded in 1954, and the first chairlift and day lodge were opened in 1959. The Roundhouse ski lodge and ski patrol station at the top of the mountain began construction in 1960. It is an octagonal building. Still standing, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as "Mt. Alyeska Roundhouse" in 2003, and now houses a museum to local ski history.
Currently, Alyeska has five chairlifts, one high-speed tram, and two Magic Carpets. Of the five chairlifts, one is co-owned by Alyeska and the Tanaka Foundation (Chair 5). Chairs 6 and 4 are high-speed detachable quads, while Chairs 7 and 3 are normal quads. Chair 4 was updated to a high speed quad in 2012. A sixth chairlift, Chair 1, was removed from service in the summer of 2017.
Chair 4 ends halfway up the mountain. The tram ends three-quarters of the way up the mountain. The interconnected buildings contain the Roundhouse (patrol quarters), and a much newer facility housing the upper tram terminal, a quick-service cafeteria, and the Seven Glaciers 4-star restaurant and bar. At the base of the tram is the modern 300-room Hotel Alyeska.
Chair 6 goes to the highest lift served point on the mountain at 2,750 feet (840 m). Several areas above Chair 6 are occasionally opened, but require hiking to access. Plans to build a new chair lift higher up the mountain have been announced.
Mount Alyeska is a fairly challenging mountain, and has a much higher percentage of advanced and expert runs, as compared to most other mountains in North America. It has a small section for the novice, but the rest of the mountain is almost entirely for the intermediate and the advanced skiers.

Thank you Henry, for that wonderful hike! Not something I could do for real, that’s for sure! I didn’t realize the trails go back and forth like that, instead of straight up and down. Now it all makes sense! I truly enjoyed it. It tired me out, even just on the treadmill!

I had just seen a program about jeaneau and I said to my wife, "I wonder if Henry has an Alaskan walk".. And I found this. Glad you started inside the building it gives good context. Thankyou for giving the celcius temparature for us people in the south of the planet!! The path you chose down is amazing and way better than the cable car. Thanks Henry, another good one!!

Hi Challis, too funny, and regarding the metric system, I was recently thinking, what if people in the US just started refusing to use imperial. How far is it to the store? Oh about 7km. Uh, how far is that in Miles? I don't do miles, but it's 7km.
@challis5513
@challis5513 2 жыл бұрын
@@CityWalks yes cause when people do use miles, gallons and inches etc I need to mentally calculate the kilometer, litre and centimeter conversion here. Just so you know, you are my travel channel so when you do these walks thats my time to go "overseas" for an evening travel mission. Don't ever feel shy to stop n show the flowers etc around you, I think this channel would have many curious eyes as my wife and I always take note of the gardens you walk past and the plants and animals we/you see on your walks.

I took this walk yesterday. It was beautiful and reminded me of the Alps, except I only remember lots of shrubs and not trees in the Alps. I don't know how they ski around all the trees. I wished I had some snips and a bag to put specimens in as there was so much plant life I didn't know. I prefer being able to see the valley below, but I understand that is not always possible. It was nice to see Melinda waiting for you at the lodge. Oh yes, I always appreciate your acknowledging up front that you brought the bear spray on these types of nature walks. Thanks again.

Really enjoying your Alaska trip. I am a little behind with your walks, due to construction work on my old house. However, I was lucky enough to visit Anchorage in 1987 on my way to Japan, then later in 2003 I went on an Alaska cruise from Vancouver. It is a truly amazing place with beautiful scenery. Your walks brought back lovely memories. 🚶🏽‍♀️👍👏

Thank you Henry. I enjoy your resort walks. I see them as small self sufficient communities, with nature as a backdrop. I think it's easy to run out of superlatives pretty quickly when describing Alaskan nature. Simple enough just to say it is beautiful. Take care.

Beautiful place. You asked about camera angles. For me, since I use these strictly to achieve my walking goals on the hated treadmill, I think the angles used in this were perfect. I use spots ahead in the trail you walk as ‘mini-goals’ throughout so I need to see the trail ahead. It’s all a mental thing for me. The scenery is great and obviously beautiful but definitely not my sole purpose in watching them.

Hi Doug, Thanks for the questions. I've never had any incidents with wild animals but I'm pretty aware of my surroundings and locations I choose. I currently wear some Solomon X ultra 4s that I like but as long as they fit well, and have good traction, they're all pretty similar. Hope that helps. -H

Hi Henry, beautiful walk. Is it safe to walk down the trail as in 24:27 while holding the camera? As we say in the mining industry, please put safety first. As to the kind of view you asked about, i'd rather gor for the higher one so we can see the awsome background, with some shots of the terrain when there are interesting things to see, like flowers, etc. But your happy medium was very good. Best regrads.

It is a very good-quality video, thanks for sharing. Csodálatos a táj ! I liked the most when you left the paved path, halfway through the recording. One small friendly remark: I know that you have to go on a paved road for quite some time but during that, could you please uplift the camera a bit and record the rocks, the many colours, lights and shades, the sky, trees, the water, instead of the dull grey tarmac/plates of the main path since I felt like driving on a motorway as the middle of the image was always filled in by the paved sidewalk with that long railing/balustrade. Of course, it can be shown from time to time to assure wheelchair users that is rollable, but not many are going to take the journey anyway. Thanks again!

I think this is my favorite of the Alaska walks. My initial thought was that it seemed a lot steeper than Switzerland but a great path down. Wonder how long it takes to hike up?? Not sure where you ski there, it all looked pretty treacherous. You asked about the view when walking down the trail, and I prefer the higher shot with ground shots interspersed so we can see the terrain too. However, whatever is safest seems the wisest course. Thanks again for a great walk today!.

Thanks so much for the feedback mags. Don’t worry, I am almost always looking down at the trail with my eyes but I can point the camera elsewhere as I walk. I saw several people hiking up or that had a hiked up but it looked very steep and challenging. -H

You ski there- where he was walking under the tram line is a run. It's a black diamond. Aleyska does have easier runs closer to the bottom for less experienced skiers. And more intense terrain than what you see here, if you take chair 6 farther uphill from where the tram lets off.
