The police made an attempt to reason with the hijacker, then when he refused to accept, they acted accordingly. If someone is putting the lives of innocents in danger, the safety of the hostages takes priority over the survival of the suspect.

Same thing happened here in my country a few years ago and the hijacked vehicle was a tourist bus to boot. Sad to say our rescue/de escalation attempt was an utter failure. Our national police and the local and national govt, by extension, embarrassed themselves live on national TV, not wearing the prescribed wear , fking up protocols during such emergency situations. The international community feasted on our incompetence, and the mother nation of the victims condemned us for it. Those were dark times.

A person dying is never a happy ending. All of the situation is sad, it should have never happened in the first place, but we are glad no innocent lives were taken. But this is definitely not a happy situation nor ending, its not like they all went to disney world and ate ice cream, thats a happy ending. Either he was crazy, or poor, or whatever, a society should work to avoid these problems happening in the future, so that the victims dont go through traumas like that, and that no one would have a reason to hijack a bus..

I mean I don't like it either but the whole bridge was "frozen" because of the operation. No car going in or out. So the governor wanted his screentime and went by helicopter. (BTW it was already finished when he arrived.)

If that happened here in the U.S. the gunman would have burned several people to death . Wouldn’t have any real injury only to his wrist from the handcuffs .
