I’ve been interested in a CTR or GR Corolla because of what they represent (especially the CTR), track ready enthusiast vehicles which are more “affordable.” But after watching this I feel like I’m actually less interested in either car, watching these major flaws that they have, and the investment needed to rectify them. Granted driving day to day on the street one wouldn’t really have these issues, but I kind of get this “you get what you pay for” vibe and see why maybe that more expensive (insert sports car name) is justified in its pricing.

@jabito172 ай бұрын
Have a GRC with basically the same setup minus the brakes. I don’t think you need to take it to $70k to beat a CTR/EN on track, considering it was less than 0.1 second behind a CTR stock with identical tires. You could probably do: 2025 GRC Core - $39k Ohlins R&T/Annex- $2700 Camber Bolts - $30 That alone would probably dust a CTR/EN for a single hot lap well under CTR MSRP while not turning into complete ass in less than ideal road conditions. To take it to something that would do it all day without going into limp mode: 555 transmission cooler - $1500 (can’t speak to this just yet, mine just shipped) Syvecs AWD controller - $1000 Powertrain wise, if you don’t mind voiding your warranty, a tune and intake ($1300 for remote through Limit+1, $460 Sxth intake) will take you to +40 whp, 30 wtq. Not sure how far you’d want to go beyond that, given the relatively soft valve springs. Power will vary more than competitors given the amount of boost required. In more ideal conditions, C&D managed a 4.4 0-60 despite hitting 60 in third, stock. After a tune, I actually ended up driving my car in the custom mode with eco drivetrain most of the because I prefer the power delivery. This thing rips with a tune. www.caranddriver.com/news/a61687494/2024-toyota-gr-corolla-premium-test-analysis/ Suspension imo was the biggest weakness in the stock setup. Basically with the addition of coilovers you beat any ICE hot hatch on the market on track for under 43k. This is actually a tremendous value. Add transmission cooling ($2500), oil cooling (~$1500), and a intake/tune ($1800), you’re still getting a pretty decent deal compared to competitors that’ll do a full track day, all though value proposition isn’t as strong. 70k is kind of absurd. They paid 7k for essentially a cosmetic package as the circuit actually weighs more than a fully loaded core, then spent 6k on a brake package that’s overkill unless you live on a track, intake that sounds amazing (I have one) but could probably be replicated output wise for $1100 less, $600 rear upper control arms despite fairly aggressive rear camber (over -2 from factory that can go more aggressive with ride height adjustments alone) and also a $1000 exhaust that weighs +10lbs more than stock. Props to savagegeese for seeing the potential in this platform.

On the other hand, my first FL5 customer will not let anyone park his car anywhere close to curbs because he put 30k on it the first year he had it, he is so afraid of any little bit of imperfection of the exterior of the car. Did I mention how cheaply the bumper the Elantra N was made, one side of the bumper pop out with the corner bolt was still holding it to the bracket, we had to push it back during the oil change. As someone that has tracked his last 5 daily drivers, I've come to the conclusion that it's just not worth it. Daily drivers have too many compromises. Get a second car, even if it's cheap, and build it up from there. Preferably NA and lightweight, ie Miata or GR86/BRZ or at least older (lighter and slower) Mustang/Camaro/Corvette. Turbo and supercharged engines get too hot and pull boost, killing much of the fun. Light because it's much better on brakes/tires/handling and teaches you to be a better driver. Unless you're a Jack that can afford to drop $25k on upgrades, which still didn't solve all the cars problems, just make a dedicated car.

The build process is exciting but goddamn do you bleed money for the chore of doing all the work yourself. All that said I’m looking at salvage title ND1s to convert to a track toy and probably won’t take my own advice. 😂

Great video. I think that it's funny that people care about the track so much. In stock form the CTR is faster, so what. You are there to have fun and if you are slightly faster or slower it doesn't change the fun factor. Most people don't track and these are both fun to drive on the street. Where the GRC really shines is on back mountain roads, and in bad weather and snow the fun really begins. There is no contest on a rally course either. The CTR gets the win in stock form on the track, but I'll take a GRC for real world, all weather driving fun every day. I'm glad to see that you spoke about the 555 transfer case cooler. When watching I kept saying, why don't you install the 555 transfer case cooler??? 🤣 Luckily you don't have to spend much of anything on the GRC to have an amazing car on the street in all kinds of weather.

It's always amazing to me that people will drop $50k on a performance car but then not bother spending $400 on a track day
@jimsgaragetoys2 ай бұрын
@@davidzebar6876 Well that depends on where the track is in relation to the owner. I'v driven many different cars on the track and the tracks near me aren't anything to get excited about. I've been racing in different forms since the 80's so I know what I personally like and could care less about. I don't care what people do to enjoy their fun cars, the track, autoX, fun back roads, canyons, that is up to the owner. Not everyone wants to dump $400 for a track day so I don't hold that against them. But most people spend 99% of the time on public roads, so worrying about little things on the track that doesn't change the fun factor of the day does seem silly to me, but to each their own.

Have you got an oil leak on the GRC? Lot of gunk around the sump pan and your under tray is also covered in gunk

I run my FL5 with Carbotech XP12/XP10 and castrol SRF on Kuhmo v730 tires at VIR in advanced groups on HPDE and I never have had the pedal get to the ground and that’s a hard and fast track. Now I did eat through front pads in 3 days with VSA off in Type R mode. I did get pedal bottom out when I ran Endless MX72+ pads though.

Problem with the Golf R is the lack of a front LSD. You end up cooking the brakes to an absurd to degree.

Why not stay with the hot hatch theme and give the Golf R a look? If you're going American, CT4V Blackwing would be a great choice for a series.

This is very interesting and I had a lot of concerns with the braking on my Integra Type S. I did some research and chose to go with the stock brake fluid (higher temp rating than standard dot3), Paragon titanium brake shims to reduce heat transfer in the front into the calipers, and Hawk HP+ which were crazy loud but just tremendous braking force compared to stock. No brake issues at all at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park GP track, but maybe it has longer stretches that lets the brakes cool down but I also have some upgrades and a custom tune that should put the car to 360-380hp. Perhaps I'm just not pushing the brakes hard enough too with the PS4S tires. I did have torque vectoring on. Sessions were between 12 to 20 laps. Each lap was around 1:48. I guess there was also some traffic at times and even had to wait to pass a GT3 RS every session. So maybe I didn't get a chance to go full out for more than 3 laps at a time. Ambient temp was around 20C so more manageable too. I track once a year and really didn't want to go to dot4 and half year brake fluid flushes. Looking at the front and back of the brake shim, the color change speaks volumes as to it reducing heat transfer. Would be interesting how this car does in hotter weather with less traffic.

When on track, peddle dance required!! The ITS (Acura Integra Type S aka the type r twin) is so good on track!! The same is required on a STi, full traction control OFF. Extreme summer tires on the smallest wheels you can fit.

The next build series just has to be the new Mustang GT if it's gonna be a V8. I truly believe you are the guys on YT who will objectively approach that car with a realistic mindset to turn the s650 platform into a true dual-purpose machine ...and maybe even convince those of us who prefer German to American ( example: my wife's boyfriend) into an American "sports" car

I’d love to see you guys via a 2016 to 2018 BMW M2 as a long-term car. Modded up, and compare it to these. The BMW is around the same price used as these are new and it would be an interesting comparison for new versus used on a track build.

I run AP Racing calipers and rotors on my G82 M4C and they are so much better than the stock M brakes it's not even close. You also save almost 20lbs in weight up front and they look pretty damn good too.
