Civil War confused the shit out of me because I walked out of it having taken away the message “journalists like those depicted in this film are vultures who prey upon misery and bloodshed to advance their own careers/egos/desire for thrills, and only by taking a stance, by doing more than being a neutral observer, can they hope to save lives.” … I then read Alex Garland’s comments on his own movie, where he stated he wanted to make a film where journalists are the heroes, and that he thinks journalists should be neutral. I’m absolutely baffled.

I'm confused why you're confused. It tried to show the dramatic life of journalists in war; the ones who aren't "embedded" at least; I guess you are young enough to have missed to major political discourse around the embedded journalists of the latest Afghanistan and Iraq War etc. Adam is spot on about the meaning of the film in general; it's about a US Civil War; it should either be about the current discourse of politics or at least show a new Lore (it only showed a blunt empty "these imaginary alliances fight; the end").

The Civil war is apolitical, because it's based on an average western person perception of all these wars in the world that you hear about on the news. Complex conflict on ethnic, political, societal, religious and economic grounds that are just reduced to "people are just fighting the goverment because it's bad." It's a movie made from the ignorant perspective of the media that just boiled down conflicts across the globe to nothingness, like the Syrian civil war. It doesn't matter who the sides are, just that war is bad and people die in it.

On Civil War: People seem to want a "civil war would be THEIR fault" movie to validate everything they already believe but a "hey guys a civil war would be really really really bad" movie was what they wanted to make. You can criticize the ways they tried to deliver that message and it's not like they were subtle about it, but I don't think they made a mistake at all by trying to make the exact causes ambiguous and separated from any parallels that are too obvious. I mean you can say "it tried to appeal to everyone" but IMO it makes for a more productive message precisely because it's way more likely to be heard by someone who you'd want to hear it.

Also, I kinda liked the subversion of Civil War being less about politics and more of a commentary/celebration/love letter to war/combat photojournalism. It was very much the vibe of "this is what is happening currently overseas" with the set piece being the US. I feel like part of the point was to maintain a sense of neutrality from the POV for the photojournalists. I think the overall moral was left up in the air but the line where Kirsten Dunst is like "we don't do anything about this, we take pics so other people can do something about it" was definitely there to provoke discussion on the ethics of combat photojournalism. I had a friend who had a similar take as you though, and felt a bit disappointed or that it was a missed opportunity that they did not go political with it, but I think that was part of the point.

Your description of Sasquatch Sunset reminds me of one of my dad's favorite movies, Quest for Fire. It's about neanderthal cavemen going on a journey to find more fire after the one they had blows out. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I remember it being a bit gross with a sex scene, and I don't think there's any dialogue at all, since the cavemen haven't developed a spoken language yet. Sounds like it could be a similar experience of a movie.

It's an awesome movie if you don't mind that kind of humor. I personally wish it didn't go in that direction though, because every other scene is really incredible

I saw Civil War last night, and I really liked it. I found the characters engaging, and I felt like it didn’t need to have a political edge to it. It’s about journalism, which is meant not to favor one side or faction. So idk.

Honestly I think Jones drank so much of his own Kool-Aid he's less a monster and more detached from all reality. And as you said, hilarious.

Personally, one One of my favourite aspects of Civil War was the fact that you have no idea where this conflict originated, or what the political alignment of any of its characters are. It reminds me of the Cormac McCarthy quote “Before man was, war waited for him.” Conflict in its own right is the subject, and is not submitted to value judgments of good and evil. Despite the cruel senselessness of it, it remains both natural and inevitable. Every time we see violence on screen, the perpetrators of it do so with a smile on their face, as if the violent act in itself is the thing that fulfills them, above and beyond whatever cause or alliance they stand behind. Our protagonists are photographers, looking to exploit the conflict for its artistic value, no doubt to contribute to their own commercial success and prestige, not to mention the thrill they derive from it. Garland probably sees himself in Jesse and Lee, as he too utilizes art to exploit the violent nature of man, alongside the atrocities of war, in order to derive from it something that stimulates his interest and creativity. If war is inevitable, then none of us can forsake our participation, and at the end of the day, no claim to the rightful side of history is an objective one.

Sasquatch Sunset sounds like someone took the Wookie segments of the Star Wars Holiday Special and tried to make a feature length film out of it for shits and giggles.

The point is the conflict itself. Not the ideologies. It would be cool to see the backstory of the conflicts that led to the strange alliances, but then it opens up a whole box of politics and moral arguments that the director wasn’t interested in exploring. He is more focused on showing how horrific war is, who is “right” isn’t the point when everyone is suffering.
@HudzunDunDunDun7 ай бұрын
@@IF2XboxGamingVids if you're making a revisionist history film that is exploiting todays political climate, then the "lore" is going to be your biggest strongsuit. even modern warfare 2 took the time to explain the origin of the conflict. If I'm only watching to see the horrors of war I might as well rewatch come and see. I understand if Garland didn't wanna do that though. I just think that would have been a far more interesting film.

I genuinely enjoyed Civil War, I wasn’t planning on seeing it but my buddy was pumped for it. I would personally give it a 7-7.5 out of 10. Though the story isn’t as deep as I hoped, I genuinely enjoyed some of the character interactions and fucking loved the cinematography of it all.

You are way off about Civil War. I remember when i saw Four Lions for the first time... I was so annoyed it didn't have more to say than "terrorists are dumb kids that are easily influenced". But that truth has played to be truer than any other narrative. "War is bad and senseless" feels shallow... but like Four Lions... its told so precisely that I will remember it for a long time
