The Indo-Europeans are not believed to have directly migrated from Africa. The current understanding is that the Indo-European language family originated in the steppes north of the Black and Caspian Seas, and from there, Indo-European-speaking people spread into Europe, Asia, and other regions1.
The earliest migrations of modern humans out of Africa occurred long before the Indo-European languages developed. These migrations populated the globe and eventually led to the diverse range of human cultures and languages we see today. The Indo-Europeans were one such group that emerged after these initial migrations out of Africa had already populated Eurasia2.
The spread of Indo-European languages is attributed to the migrations of peoples from the Eurasian steppes into Europe and Asia, which began around 3500 BC, according to the Kurgan hypothesis. This spread is not directly linked to the initial out-of-Africa migrations of modern humans13.
