"We don't trust you. Not after the way you attacked the Egyptians!" First of all, they attacked me first just because I didn't give them my incense. Second, I annexed their cities instead of burning them. Third, that was 3000 years ago!

I was never really that good at Civ 3, mostly because I didn't play to win, but to watch an alternate history play out. Usually, my strategy was to pick a Civ at random, build whatever my advisors told me to build, and only go to war defensively. Usually, this resulted in me being some sort of middling power by 2050, when the timer ran out, and I was okay with that. It was like watching AI matches, except I was doing the bidding of one of the AIs. This piece reminds me of the first time I ever won a game of Civ 3. It was about fifteen years ago, I was playing as Persia, and my dumb non-strategy somehow resulted in me becoming a powerhouse by mid game. I won a time victory. Of course, looking back on it, it's pretty pathetic (I'm sure I could have won a scientific or domination victory if I tried), but I was pleased with the results at the time. But the weird thing is, I still remember that game fairly vividly, including the game map (three continents - a large Asia-sized continent in the south and two smaller ones in the north). I remember Greece, Germany and England being rivals, and completely wiping England out after it declared war on me. I remember being excited after having built a cross-continental railroad on the Asia-sized continent that I eventually got to myself, linking my Persian west coast with the former English east coast.

Modern Armor... Modern Armor everywhere... In the meantime the Iroquois have launched expedition to Alpha Centauri. On the far end of Neverending Aztec Empire, Shaka Zulu, with his unstoppable stealth bomber squadrons is decimating mechanized infantry divisions that are defending recently annexed Pi-Ramesses. Oh and of course Gandhi has started nuclear war with Hammurabi. 10/10 would lose UN elections with Germany again.

I will always love Civilization 3. Even when the Romans think it's ok to walk all over my territory but complain whenever I pass through theirs. Even when the Romans see my new city at their borders and attack it. Even when a single rifleman with two health left kills three of my modern armors in a row.. Even when my entire empire falls to anarchy from war weariness after two turns despite building Universal Suffrage and a police station in every city.

I really did love this game with a passion. I was willing to wait 10^x turns for the rainforest in the Mesoamerican scenario map to be eliminated by global warming just so i could say I colonized the whole map. That and sending out legions of ships to try and get to the fabled cuba that the map preview showed without sinking them.

@jaguarkid140 A division of modern day soldiers isn't just a bunch of guys with guns. they inlude antitank missiles, bradleys, antitank rifles, and humvees armed with antitank missiles. Also, with modern day night vision, they would wipe the floor with enemy tanks since they would be easy pickings at night. A world war 2 tank division defeating a modern day infantry division would be astounding. spearmen reducing the strength of a modern infantry unit by even 1/5 is crazy.

Build lots of cities. Civ IV, V and VI took the city building out of the game franchise. In those games, 10 cities is considered wide, here, it's ridiculously tall.

Civ 3 uses roads as money which feeds into science which feeds into civilization power. Build lots of roads in between the initial farms to feed a new city and mines to build production. As there is not a big penalty for too many cities like in Civ 4, build lots of cities to cover all usable territory. Finally, keep large unit stacks to increase fighting power. The right terrain will help spearmen hold off modern infantry in some cases. You actually die at warlord or just give up?
@RandomStuffPT12 жыл бұрын

The RNG isn't that bad, generally a better unit would win, but I guess it would be possible (but extremely rare) for a knight to kill a modern soldier. There needs to be a huge exception though, because I cannot see stone axes or wooden rafts defeating tanks and battleships. Although then again, a moden soldier with a rifle against even an WWII tank, the soldier would be useless.
@hollywood46914 жыл бұрын
@Cotten55 i think there is a contradiction in your statement, sir
@CamanEmpire12 жыл бұрын
Depending on the size of your Empire, you may need to jump governments sooner. Ie... I pick up Republic ASAP, then Democracy, almost beelining them both, then I forcefully take Communism/Fascism from my neighbor so no turns wasted and convert based on homogenity and size of my Empire. Also... Research ICS and focus less on culture and buildings, and more on military. But don't be shy to build libraries if you can spare the turns.
@lugiawingsKH12 жыл бұрын

You're obviously a noob if you ever switch to Democracy. It has zero unit support you can't build an army on Democracy unless you're playing Chieftain.
@Agent1W8 жыл бұрын

I've been playing this game since I was 5 (I'm 14 now). I'm not a "noob", and I quite often use Democracy. I won on deity using Democracy.
@alejandrocabrera6357 жыл бұрын
Maybe the noob is you. With democracy the amount of money per turn skies up and then one can proceeds to flood the map with Modern Armors and Stealth Bombers and take one nation to another quickly before the riots start. Plus, if you build enough Universities and Research Centers you can cut research financiation and give it to enterteinment. At last it works from "Chieftain" to "Monarch" levels.
