i would like to point out, that in some cases the roman had foreign words from the etruscian in their language, like the most famous word, populus and these words kinda destroy most vocal theories. the differences of spelling of the vocals in lating and our expectation of latin could be simply mixed in actual use and thereby random. like the use of verdura or verdure. Sg/Pl, but most italians would use both variants in the same sentence. italian ci/ce gi/ge sounds could be from the normal latin or just an italian intonation of the actual senat-principates latin. we dont have clear gramatical rules for the major population and the italian is quite transformed for the ear. (adding h, if the gi/ci rules wont work in konjugations etc.) i liked the idea, that the populus of roma spoke with amodern romanic dialect of latin, while the patrician language of the senat remained to be more semi-greek and etruscian for old times sake. they had to learn greek as rich patrician with education. they would use these terms and it would have influenced their practial use of laguage.

About the heavy aspiration in "certō", I always interpreted that as he chuckling in the beginning of the word, something that causes us Romance language speakers to sound like aspirating certain consonants!
@polyMATHY_Luke3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! If it were only this word, I'd say the same.
@empyrionin3 жыл бұрын
In fact a little bit of aspiration on this is tolerable since later on these consonants became ç or tç by means of an intermediary step (probably an aspiration). I believe this was akin to "ae" pronounced "e" by some speakers. I would be fine with that, moreso than the overall Italian accent. But then again, I might be biased, being Romanian.

I don't think that's a great idea. Songs will always have a totally different pronunciation and tone from regular speech. The Latin in OWA checks out - as it uses fairly typical phrases. But the exact pronunciation? You can't tell. Aside from the fact that the singers (in all official versions) are probably English speakers.
@guymcaulay89963 жыл бұрын
@@hundvd_7I'm pretty sure the original vocalists for One Winged Angel are Japanese. You can hear it in how they pronounce "Sephiroth" with a sort of "ss" sound instead of "th"- characteristic of Japanese speakers, as their language does not have a "th" sound.
@hundvd_73 жыл бұрын
It does, but I'd assume that's a product of having to sing in a choir, rather than an accent. You can't exactly sing a θ all that well, so you have to emphasize it somehow. (This really is just speculation, though - they could totally be Japanese, too)
@hundvd_73 жыл бұрын
@@guymcaulay8996 Totally true, actually. Idk how I didn't notice before. _Though_ the θ -> s sound change _could_ also be just because the singers are trying to enunciate it more clearly.

Necesse est tibi de Civ VI loqui! Every time I hear Trajan's opening line I try to figure out whether one of the words that should be accusative is either A. not accusative or B. pronounced with a nasalized -a the way you would suggest except that I can't detect the nasalization.

amazing to see that the first syllable stressed version of cerebrum looks and sounds almost exactly the same in modern portuguese

Thank you for this! Yes, I would absolutely LOVE to see more such reviwes from you! maybe try the greek spoken by the Greeks in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, or the Latin spoken by the Roman soldiers in Assassin's Creed: Origins. AC have always prided itself in its historical accuracy (which cannot be denied in some aspects of the game), but let's see how well thay've got it when it comes to speaking ancient languages :D

You should definitely do the civ6 versions, since I hear in general their languages across the board are more accurate.

You should look at some of the Latin translations of Disney songs, the one for “Let it Go” is surprisingly good sounding musically but I’m not sure how good the Latin is

Hi , thanks for great videos you made at your Chanel , I would suggest to make a video about the Carl Orff musics in Latin the famous Carmina Burana , it would be amazing 👍🏻

Was that truly a review of Latin in a game? Or maybe a great chance to explain the Latin stress rule? Either way, I loved it! I wish you review more of Latin in video games. How about Battle for Wesnoth?

Civilization V did not just get the latin much better than VI but is also the much better game. In fact probably one of the best games with infinite replayability.

civilization 6 has Rome as one of the civilizations to play aswell, it would be great if you made a video on Latin there. (theres also ancient Greece, represented by 2 different leaders)
