As a Dutch history student the clothing of Willem van Oranje really pisses me off. He looks like a poor and low ranking noble and not like the very rich, high standing man he was. In the late 16th century it was custom to show off your wealth by what you wore. All these colours indicate that this was actually rather cheap. The real expensive clothing was black and reserved for the super rich and powerful. The style was rather sober after the Spanish fashion of the time which caught on in the Northwest op Europe because the sober trend fitted protestantism more. This is more second rate French style clothing.

William of Orange was a remarkable person. He went about single-handedly defying the Spanish, and had he survived long enough, he would have worked together with England to obliterate the Spanish presence in the Netherlands. His death wasn't in vain though - It caused the Dutch Navy and their Sea Beggars (basically privateers) to ramp up their defensive capabilities which would prove vital in the years to come.

This theme was inspired by a Dutch song from 1871 written for the 300-year remembrance of the capture of the city of Brielle, which had its festivities in 1872, 300 years after the capture of the city on April 1st 1572. A guy Named Erik I don't know if it's true in this particular case, but there's a tendency among English-speakers to corrupt foreign names. So, this guy's name might be 'Oranje' in dutch, which may not have anything to do with oranges, or the color orange, but we changed it to 'Orange' so it would be easier for English people to read or something. The same concept applies to Francis (Franz) Ferdinand and Catherine (Yekaterina) the Great. I'd like to note that I may be ENTIRELY wrong, but this is just a guess.

In A.I. only battles the Dutch tend to get their asses kicked early on. I played as Venice with my little Nuclear Sub hidden away and the 42 other civs in the game duked it out. The Dutch usually find themselves up against France, Germany, Rome, and Spain pretty early on. All the extra hammers early game can really be OP if you get Lucky with horses and iron and also the double uranium is really good. Far better than civ 5 Netherlands imo which is just borderline useless (shit ability, polders are the only good thing but if you have no marshes or flood plains you're not gonna get these babies and sea beggars are easily stopped by frigates, which are a premier unit in this game meaning everyone will build these if they can. Civ 4 Netherlands was borderline broken though with financial + creative and dikes for crazy production if you have lots of coastals. The unique ship was also amazing since it was basically a Renaissance era 4 space transport that others won't get untill modern era and have oil connected. Civ 4 Netherlands truly was top tier while civ 5 Netherlands is bottom tier
