Jaywick used to be such a great place. The beach is beautiful. Sadly it has become run down and desperately needs money put back into the town. I was bought up in Brightlingsea a few miles down the coast. I remember Butlins at Clacton well. 😊😊😊

Great video. I went there every year, as a kid,50 years ago. The fish and chip shop used to be called the dive and was a real treat. Great to see it again, especially since I moved to the us, 20 years ago. Not sure about nowadays but if you'd have walked into the "town center" and gone just off into the side streets, the pubs are hiding there, off the main drag. I grew to love Clacton because we went to Jaywick for two whole weeks and you had to learn to amuse yourself back then, even when it rained all day. Cheers!

It’s been quieter in Cornwall this summer too. We were swamped with visitors when you couldn’t go abroad during the pandemic and prices were hiked to ridiculous levels to take advantage of that. Those prices are still the same, but so many suffering with the cost of living means that only those with loads of money can afford it.

I was brought up in a seaside town myself, so whenever I visit another one, and I fancy a 'chippie', I NEVER go to a sea-front place - they're usually a bit 'meh' and diffinitely over-priced (the rates to set up a business there are always higher) - instead I'll go look down the back streets further in town (usually worth checking out anyway) until you find one where the seeming locals go. There, they are usually much better.

Hi James, I thought this video was excellent and particularly interesting to hear your views between Southend and Clacton. I live just outside Southend which was lovely years ago but due to the change in society has too many problems, ie drugs, drink and so on. Clacton was my go to resort for the day, but took 50 mins to drive. The beach is gorgeous and is usually full, as I go there on a Sunday. There is a huge drug problem in the town itself.. Thanks for this one, you are really great at this, so very interesting. And yes, us Brits love to hear the prices of everything, its our judging scale! Hope you have a brilliant holiday with Helen 😊

I was in Clacton yesterday for the air show, obviously much busier than in this video but a little down on the same event last year I think. One of the few times I would go there as local, there's nothing wrong with it but I prefer the beach at Walton on the Naze just up the coast. Would recommend if you get the chance, that has more of a small town feel to it. Also has a pier but not as nice as Clacton's. Apparently Clacton was voted the worst seaside resort by Which? magazine or something, hence the 'hate', but I don't pay attention to such things. Looks like most of the videos on here reached the same conclusion as you, that in reality if you go there it's fine.

Good morning James, My first film of yours was the Southend jobby and it was a fine visual and audible summary - thank you! Having both liked and subscribed your documentary, I should mention that I last went to Southend some 50 years ago, it has changed! I think you are 100% correct in thinking the reason why such seaside resorts are so quiet the simple lack of money, the cost of everything - a couple of quid to walk down Southend Pier (and back!) £8+ for a few hours parking? Family of two adults & 2 kids could easily spend £100+ for the day without trying, luckily they're not charging to breathe the sea-air (yet) Films are well stitched together and v.well-narrated. Taverymuchlike! VBWx

It just doesn't make any sense for anything other than a quick weekend trip, when you can pay less for guaranteed sunshine and beautiful beaches on the Med, not to mention cheaper food and drink. Britain's seaside resorts are from a time when continental travel was the preserve of the wealthy. Luckily that's no longer the case.

Used to love visiting my Nan's family at Clacton in the 70's as a mini human (born 69),... she moved back from Dundee then made it up to a Captain in the Salvation Army there,... Let your viewers know that if they aren't able to watch a video or don't have time for the whole episode to just let it run even though they may not watch it. They can even turn the sound off as well but let it run, especially with all the commercial ads, that's how you make the most money. There's a little 76 year old lady van dweller with a youtube channel that has asked her viewers to do this so she can generate more income. And, even though you think a video might be boring, remember there are those of us who don't live in the UK and we'd like to see all the different towns and cities around there so we can get and idea of what it's like. I checked out the mercury levels for Haddock and Cod and Haddock is lower and safer. I enjoyed your walk-about in Clacton, I love small sea towns. Enjoy your time with Helen, thanks for the video today.

James, the most likely candidate for what you could see in the distance at the beginning of the video is Gunfleet Old Light House, which is on top of Gunfleet Sands a mile or two offshore. There are several ruined navigation beacons visible in the area as well. The Thames Estuary between Essex and Kent is a nightmare of sand banks for anyone sailing in the area.

I went to uni in Colchester and loved going to Clacton. It is a bit deprived but people are friendly and the vibe is good in spite of that. I’m from Kent and I am used to towns like Margate and Sheerness which are similar. Posh seaside towns don’t do it for me. I like to see life lived out not a sanitised fantasy. If you want to see a resort town that has gone down hill check out Torquay. I was shocked at how scruffy and grim it’s got.

@By The Curb - James, thank you for posting your Clacton-on-Sea video 😊. The Pier gardens are beautiful and well cared for. I did wonder how you managed to walk past the fish and chip shop! Perhaps now you've seen The Pier area, as you said, if you wanted to head back this way with your kids, venturing literally a couple of miles along the sea road to the beautiful cove-like beaches of Holland-in-Sea would be good! Near Kingscliff hotel. It looks a bit like the English Riveria there, since they carried out all the work along there, and imported a load of sand, mostly to protect that stretch of coastline. Yes, beach-huts can be rented, many people rent theirs out. All depending, for half days or full weeks.

It's so expensive here, and we don't get the weather. That looks nicer than last place.

Went to Southend yesterday with a friend, had a great time on the beach, even if it is all pebbles. Will definitely be going again.

i think this place was given so much bad publicity with the programmes about the worst places to live. i remember jaywick being featured a lot but the people who lived there were all looking to just survive and make the best of what they had. it looks like ita trying its best to turn its bad publicity round with some good points ❤
