Absolutely MAGNIFICENT. A great artist at the peak of her powers here. There is no better pianist -- many as good - perhaps -- but none BETTER. I've watched this young woman closely for several years and cannot undestand why she has not captured a greater share of favorable attention at international competitions than she has. Could it be that her ultra-refined, mirror-smooth, highly polished, utterly brilliant technique, exquisite control of dynamic shading and consummate artstry in phrasing and overall pacing are TOO GOOD? I suspect she has made many of the judges green with ENVY. She certainly plays a great deal better than at least two first-prize winners in the past I could name, but will not. In a field overcrowded with super-virtuosi and strong musical personalities Claire Huangsci -- to me -- stands out as spectacularly gifted -- possibly even THE best.

I agree your opinion at all. Her sounds are bright, polish, powerful. I think that she had qualification of the finnalist at least.

why are your afraid to name at least 2 first prize winners that play worse? why say something like that and then not follow through...BTW i agree that she is excellent...

She has established a decent career as a concert pianist mainly doing concerts in Germany and is also a piano professor now.

It would have been more intense if she played the repeat of this sonata.

@@ilovemycatrussell9298 If you look on the wikipedia page for this competition you can find an archived version of the competition website, and go to the "rules" page, wherein repertoire selection, time limit and other instructions for the different stages can be found. The third stage has a time limit of 55-60 minutes (which will be reduced to 45-55 in 2021 unfortunately) which she actually slightly overshot. Seong-Jin Cho was able to play a second stage sonata in 2015 as he picked the shortest sonata and skipped repetition, picked the shortest waltz, shortest ballade/scherzo/barcarolle/fantasy (except for Op. 47 and sometimes Op. 39) and shortest polonaise (BTW not saying that it was a bad thing).

Outstanding technique, of which many approve, led her up to the third stage. But to my ears, the musicality she carried here never match with the grace Chopin seemed to have owned. 10 were selected as finalists at this stage. Jury didn't want her to be the one of them. Period.

Bravo Claire - Your interpretation of this Chopin Sonata draws the attention every second from the beginning to end. Please one question: between China and U.S can you explain your ( beautiful french ) first name? Thanks a lot for all.
