The new clamp is a vast improvement as it will actually stay out to hold a figure in or to pose on display. On the original the clamps spring back in so unless you keep your finger on it all the time it's not much use. I'm glad Origins changes and improves some things otherwise it would just be a pointless rehash of what's come before 40 years ago.

At first response to the different clamp feature I was bummed and pissed but then realizing and seeing at the end of the video that you can pose him with a figure clamped is frikin awesome.

I'm sure that was the reasoning. I'm sure at mattel they had both kinds in prototype and were like "this one is more satisfying to play with, but the new style is better for figure posing" And since this line is leaning a little less into action features and more into poseability, I understand the decision. I think the best solution would have been vintage style, but with some kind of tab to lock the clamp in the deployed position.

As far as customizing him and swapping parts if you took the 2 gold gloves from the MoT-WWE Mr T, (paint them silver) the body of Clamp Champ, a extra head of Zodac (if you have one and paint the mouth in a matching skin color) and take a little light blue acrylic paint you could make a pretty close version of Zodac from 200x series.

I totally get why they changed the clamp. The old one was awesome, but was prone to breaking and sticking. I had to buy 3 clamp champs before i got one with a clamp that worked like i remembered it as a kid.

Also keeping it clamped around a foe without holding it benefits both play and display if you want to have Clamp Champ grabbing or dragging someone along.

Speaking of Clamp Champ, I actually saw it at my local Toys 'R' Us while I was out shopping yesterday, along with Ram Man, a single Zodac figure, Sky Sled (with Prince Adam, of course), Battle Cat, and Panthor (unflocked, alas). I'm surprised that my local TRU doesn't have the first wave figures, though... But that was a really nice review on Clamp Champ! I continue to enjoy watch these really awesome MotU toy review videos that you put out. It's also nice how the art on the back of the cardback shows Clamp Champ protecting King Randor, since his role was being the king's bodyguard (and later Man-at-Arms after poor Duncan was turned into a Snake Man).

Missed out on clamp champ, ninjor, and scareglow as a kid. They never showed up in my stores in Montreal back in the 80s. Now I'm happy to say I got them thanks to MOTU origins.

Love that he is a deluxe figure and comes with both his weapons. This is a major win for all those that love him and I’m glad the action feature is back. I wish it was the same as the vintage figure but I’m glad it’s back.

You're not being nitpicky, Dan. You are giving a legitimate criticism of the weapon's action feature. I had no idea how the vintage one worked, so was quite shocked to see the difference here. This is a poor job by Mattel.

Even when I was a kid, I never liked Clamp Champ or Fisto. I always thought they were too plain & boring & the designers lacked imagination. There are so many awesome MOTU characters & those 2 were at the bottom of the barrel.

Hmm. I think the alternate head should have been without showing the teeth or is the idea that Clamp Champ must always clamp everything, including his jaw. Maybe it was a disability and as child and Eternian kids made fun of him and called him “Clamp Champ” because Trap Jaw had already been taken. The name stuck and a hero was born.

Was a bit surprised that they brought Clamp Champ, never one of the 'main players', into the line so quickly, I wonder it's possibly due to the worthy note of him being one of the (sadly few) black characters from the line to allow some deserved representation within Origins. Gotta admit he was never a particular favourite of mine vintage-wise; he was released very late on when things felt a bit half-hearted, and I've never been much of a fan of characters who's whole big deal "thing" about them is that they carry an unusual accessory. A reasonable update though not really sure they needed to go the whole deluxe route with him; the extra head isn't much and has a (deliberate?) 'gone crazy' look about it. The armour also feels a bit bland, should've made more of the silver upper portion. Saying all that, I don't dislike him either... Just to five-year-old me, feels kinda weird having the likes of Clamp Champ and Ninjor in with earlier character classics such as Ram Man and Stratos.

@@DarkAlex1978 Yes totally that, that's clear by the pattern of characters from all vintage waves we're getting. I'm more intrigued with relatively "lesser known" characters - particularly to the more casual fans that Mattel are in part hoping to hook - being released so early on. Certainly with the likes of Ninjor, they're actually quite obscure to the more casual fan. Not that it matters either way, it's just an interesting pattern. 🙂
