Dope story. If Big and Jay would have made an album...shit would have been crazy. Could you imagine, the locks, beans, Freeway, Bleek, DMX, Big Pun, making guest appearances, doing hooks, with Kanye, Premier, Large Prof, Swizz Beats, Just Blaze, producing tracks? It would have been GAME OVER.

Krzysztof TRIGGER WARNING: brooklyns finest is extremely overrated. The beat is just too busy and distracting. And Jay and Big drop some mediocre verses by their standards. With some really mehhhh punchlines that they seem overly proud of. "If my bitch had twins she'd probably have 2pacs..... Get it, 2pacs?" Uh, yeah I got it the first time big, it wasn't subtle. "Like short sleeves I bear arms" - it's just an average throwaway line that Jay seems so hyped on himself for. However, "I love the dough" was a fucking classic home run banger. Brooklyns finest was like a practice throwaway track IMO.

People are so polarizing. B.I.G., Nas, and Jay are all nice. Jay's ability to not write and still sound amazing is top notch. He was able to spit introspective street tales while still appealing to pop audiences. Not to mention, he was one of the first artist to slow down his flow in an era that everyone was rhyming fast (ala Das Efx) including himself. Nas is a dope as writer who paints pictures. His ability to be conscious one moment and gritty the next is bar none. He took Rakim torch to another level. I say this because Ra never had the same commercial success Nas did. Although, Ra did have some big records (to the ole headz I remember 86-91)... B.I.G. was an ill storyteller and put words together like no other. "I Got a story to tell" is one of my favorite Big songs. He made it cool to be Big, Black, and Cool, which help to launch the success of Rick Ross. Kudos to all them brothers. They are all great in their own way. Much Love!
@Powerule238 жыл бұрын
Jay wasn't one of the first artist to slow down his flow back in that era. Granted, Jay started off fast-flipping and slowed it down, but most rappers back then kept it basic with exception for a handful of rappers who fast-flipped as compared to just flowing. Style is everlasting; gimmicks are generally short-lived. (Fast flipping and speed rap are two different things - Das. Bones Thugs, early Jay et al fast-flipped; Kool G Rap, Big Pun et al speed rap). Rah was basically boxed-in as a conscious artist once hip-hop became thugged-out and vulgarity was the norm. I agree that Nas basically took Rah's influence to another level. When Nas first came out, he was hyped as a wonder child and lived up to expectations. I remember when his name started to ring and was featured by Ralph McDaniels. Dude blew up quick. And yes, BIG made being big, black, and cool to be be real cool. RIP to my homie. I met him in a weed spot on Clifton Place and he made sure I was good when I passed through St. James and the Ave; and I made sure he was good on my block across from LG. I miss him and think about him everyday. He was a really good dude.
@QUAN818808 жыл бұрын
I remember first listening to Reasonable Doubt when it dropped in 96' with my uncle and him saying "I don't like him, he sounds like he's talking and not rapping" Back then, it was all about flowing and Jay did not have the standard flow of that era, especially after leaving Jaz-O. He sounded like he was talking to you and conversing. This is what I'm trying to convey.
@Powerule238 жыл бұрын
QuanThaGod I agree. I wasn't feeling Jay at all when he first came out, particularly when I heard him with Jaz on the Originators. That being said, he turned a corner by the time he dropped Reasonable Doubt. There's some real joints on that album, including A'int No N--- that blew-up on the radio and is arguably the song that solidified his early status in NYC. And yes, on Reasonable Doubt, he did create a rhyme pattern what was distinctive from most other artists. He painted pictures on that album in a conversational manner that you describe, that he polished on In My Lifetime Vol I. Jay's first three albums are a measure of his growth. By the time he dropped Big Pimpin' on his fourth joint, he completely placed the game on smash as an artist and was knee-deep as a business man.
@Powerule238 жыл бұрын
***** It's funny you mention that track, because that song blew him up nationally. Not long after that track, he was pictured in the audience during a Knick's game broadcast, and was officially "that dude." That song was definitely a game changer in a lot of ways.
@Powerule238 жыл бұрын
***** No doubt. After he did Big Pimping, I started listening to UGK and 8ball & MJG. I was already listening to the Geto Boys and Outkast. By '98, the south really started to rise and the "sound" of hip-hop began to shift slowly but steadily to the southern influence.

We did see how great Biggie was though. He literally died because they wanted to take out the east coast's top rapper in retaliation for Pac. Every song he was on at that time was a hit. What's unfortunate is that his style didn't make it to the 2000s cause that's where he would have really shined (just like Jay-Z). I imagine a timeline with Jay, Biggie, and DMX all on the same tracks would have been a golden era.

A lot of people didn't. I remember Jay from his time with Jaz, then his solo stuff on Clark's remixes and Chubby Chubb mixtapes. This was around '93. I remember thinking, "That kid Jay Z is prolly one of the best out, but no one is checkin for his ultra lyrical fast style anymore." Same thoughts when he jumped on Original Flavor's joint. When he started rockin' with Big and dropped his first album I was a bit put off by the new "gangsta" image, that he never repped prior. I thought Reasonable Doubt was kool, but the only thing that really stood out to me was "Regrets". I kept up with what he was doing, and kinda laughed when on "Where I'm From" he threw himself in the mix as comp for Big and Nas. Then came Vol.2 Hard Knock Life ". From that point I believe Jay found his stride and himself as and artist and he became one of my favorites and MVP of the rap game as far as I'm concerned.

Can I live an cant knock the hustle 2 of the best songs of the 90'z
@esseen1003 жыл бұрын
@Jamaal Davis that's not it. What didn't resonate with me was J's switch in style. You probably weren't checking for Jay-Z before Reasonable Doubt. Jay-Z was an ultra lyrical MC who was competing with the likes of Rakim krs-1 Slick Rick even his mentor Jaz. But what happened in the mid-90s was him flowing with the site zeitgeist that had the biggie's the Nas' and the Mobb Deep's speaking about the street life particularly the hustling. Granted Jay-Z had more experience than them which made getting into that style and easy layup, it's still struck us who knew Jay-Z for having an original style that wasn't dependent on Street Talk feel a little bit awkward about his transition.
@esseen1003 жыл бұрын
@Jamaal Davis most definitely Bro. I don't disagree with you, Jay ended up becoming one of my favorite rappers. It was just rough seeing a dude who was so pristine style and content-wise (partially due to the spiritual affiliation that came with Jaz-O) to pop out later as a hustler. At the time Jay didn't have a street reputation. No New York rappers did except Rakim & Just-Ice.(and look at what they rapped about). I knew what he did because my guy DJ Tron who dj'ed for Jaz and Jay & lived next door to me at Morehouse in '91told me Jay was making some big moves "outta town". 😂🤣
@esseen1003 жыл бұрын
@Jamaal Davis Jay was an understudy the first 5 years of his career. Since HP which came out in 1986 until 1991 when Jay came out with The Originators Jay-Z was Jaz -o's understudy whether it was rhyming alongside of him, or even DJing for him when Jaz was a battle rapper Supreme at clubs like Celebrity International, Jay-Z was to Jaz what DJ Run(Run DMC) was to Kurtis Blow, a menti, and there's no shame in that. That's the culture culture of hip-hop. Someone who's more experienced in the game putting on someone who's younger or less experienced in the game and letting them learn the game around them.

Jay-Z is a professional biter. He sits back and watches samples that other artists use and then Jay will use that same sample in the same year. Jay quotes Biggie more than a muthafucka. Jay has a weak rap voice compared to Pac, Nas, or Big. Jays lacks emotional depth and lyrical content. He straight up lacks originality. Jay-Z is a smart businessman who happens to be a skilled lyricist. That's why he made it so far. In terms of artistry and musical impact, Jay ain't got shit on Pac, Nas, or Big.

@goneyesterday3778 жыл бұрын
Jay Z tied Big L in a battle which lead to L respecting him, and then they became good friends, and so Big L took Jay around to radio stations and other places to help put him on. When Big L died in 99 he was preparing to sign to Rocafella, and Jay has shouted him out numerous times since then and wrote about L in his book. Yet Big L fans for some reason think it's cool or somehow in Ls defense to shit on Jay. Fyi, when L died Jay already had albums more successful and more critically acclaimed than L who sadly only had one project that didn't do very well and wasn't very good. If you don't think that Jay is at least as good as Big L (Jay's clearly better), then ita because you either hate Jay for being successful, or you're enamored with Big L for being an underground MC who was killed. Lupe Fiasco had an excellent tweet the other day explaining just why Jay is a better and more varied rapper than Big L. (Also, the Freestyle argument is the dumbest fucking argument ever, in no universe is a single track indicative of any significant lack or skill or superiority over any artist, in, anyone's career, period, you want a legit argument? Biggie started NOT writing down his lyrics with Juicy on Ready to Die. This is before he ever met Jay-z. Jay-z admit he like to record in person with artists rather than recording tracks solo because he found out Biggie didn't write down his rhymes either when they recorded Brooklyn's Finest together. Here is DJ Primer talking about how he EYE WITNESS Biggie NOT writing his lyrics BEFORE he ever met Jay-z. WATCH HERE: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5nMi5amd9ycp7M Jadakiss talked about witness this. I'm sure Jay-z realize for certain Biggie was the greatest once he realized not only is he that ill, but HE'S NOT WRITTING THIS DOWN! Biggie is THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

not really, that was bigg's perception of it. maybe biggie already knew that jay didn't write due to clark saying so. so when the pad was put in front of him big fronted like he didn't write as well probably why he didn't finish the verse that session.

That's kool. & everyone has predacessors. KRS-1 career is longer than face's. But even Chris will tell you his body of work isn't all phenomenal. He also believes theirs no one living but Nas he could do a verzuz w/. & puts Nas as greatest MC. You call my opinion an opinion...& Yours a fact. Wtf? Stop it. Face can't fu*k w/ B.I.G. despite influencing his art. & i love the guy. But Notorious was next level & Special. Throw out Face's best story & I'll throw out BIGS..Let's see who wins. ..

Reggie Martin I hear you but the way he does it, if you don’t know biggie’s bars you would NEVER know and just think the bars were Jay’Z’s. I know on the Black album he said “I say a BIG verse, I’m only bigging up my brother”, but it doesn’t come across that way. It comes across as stealing cos he doesn’t even mention Biggie’s name at all when he uses Biggie’s bars, not even in the adlibs. He could at least say “like the great BIG said” or “my man BIG would say” or something! So new hip hop fans know he’s using Biggie’s bars and he’s actually truly giving homage. Like on the song “Niggaz in Paris” when he stole Biggie’s wordplay with the name Michael and “anyone Tyson, Jordan, Jackson” and Jay-z flipped the wordplay a little and used “Mike” instead.
