"The people of Earth are different from us, it's true. But ultimately I believe that's a good thing. They won't necessarily make the same mistakes we did. Not if you guide them, Kal. Not if you give them hope. That's what this symbol means. The symbol of the House of EL means hope. Embodied within that hope is the fundamental belief: the potential of every person to be a force for good. That's what you can bring them." That just may be the greatest line in this movie.

I love how much both versions of Jor El (Donner/Snyder) speaks so highly of humans and their 'capacity for good'. The lines from Brando: "They can be a great people Kal-El, they wish to be, they only lack the light to show the way." encapsulates exactly how amazing the human potential can be, when fully realized, even in the darkest times. Add in Crowe's: "They will race behind you. They will stumble, they will fall, but in time, they will join you in the sun." and it shows the symbol of hope that Superman is for the world, including his fellow heroes in the Justice League. I wished Snyder explored this more in detail.

One thing I find interesting about this version of Jor-El is how much he doesn't instill a god complex in Kal. Every other version of Jor kept telling Kal that he was never going to be an Earthling, that he was greater, and that he was a deity among mortals, basically talking down to earthlings. But this version is much more chill about it. He just says, "Yeah, you're born a Kryptonian, but Earth is your home. You're definitely an earthling too."
@titan133760
@titan133760 7 ай бұрын
Jor-El, in his virtual consciousness, also goes so far as to consider himself and his wife to be products of Krypton's failure as a society, thus they both decided never to join Kal to earth. It goes to show how he never sees himself as a god, but a flawed individual who nevertheless believe in the capability for humanity to be good. It's the reason why he doesn't tell his son to be a god among men, but rather to be a hope bringer for all mankind

+awesometacular Well it can be argued that at their level of sophistication, living crystals and liquid metals meld seamlessly into one another :)The materials of the future (for us) will be "programmable matter" that can take on different properties at our command. Claytronics, quantum wells, synthetic organisms and liquid metal robots are examples of such a concept that current scientists are trying to develop. It's reasonable to assume that a civilisation with technology as advanced as that of the Kryptonians have already taken this concept to a further extent, so that their materials can flexibly combine the functions of living crystals, liquid metal and much much more.

This is why I like Superman more than Batman. People may say that Superman is too over powered and nobody can match him therefore Batman is better but that is not what Superman is about. Superman is a better inspiration than Batman because Superman inspires hope and good feelings in people. He gives them inner strength to find the good in themselves and stand together. Superman has always been about his continuing and developing relationship with humanity and the lengths he will go to keep them safe. Superman's main struggle has always been trying to achieve and become the perfect symbol for humanity to latch on to.

that is not necessarily true about batman. his father was a doctor who provide aid to people who couldn't afford regular treatment and his mother was a crusader against child abuse and it's because of that that batman fights spare others the same fate as him. both he and superman represent something good even though they both have their flaws. batman represent the unyielding pursuit of justice for those who deserve it and superman represents the equally unyielding struggle to uphold the virtues of honesty and compassion in the darkest and most difficult of times.

+spideyfan2002 Okay, I'll start a conversation, if that's okay :) I disagree with your point about Jor-El being a Hypocrite. He never forced Clark to be Superman. He didn't make him put the suit on. He didn't say that Clark had an obligation to do anything. Clark has a natural instinct and wanting to help people. He's been looking for answers all his life about who he is and who his parents were and why they sent him to Earth. And here, the Jor-El program is giving him the answers he's been seeking all his life. And he's been told that his family heritage is that of promoting goodness and hope. And again, he never told him "you have to" or "you must" or you will". He's giving him the chance to forge his destiny. Not because he was told to do it, but because it's what he wants to do. Jor -El kept saying "You CAN embody the best of both worlds." "Not IF you guide them, Kal." "Not IF you give them hope." "That's what you CAN bring them." It wasn't a command, it was a choice.

The sadness of this scene is found in the inability to change and the hope that the last chance for change in found in the lost of everything that made you unique. I tell my kids, “You were born to be great. You will be a better person than me. I believe in you. No matter what you face in life, I know you won’t fail. Hmm there's an interesting thought, if the kryptonians spread out and explored the galaxies long ago in the past it's highly likely they encountered a yellow star at some point so there may have been other supermen who lived long before Kel-El on other alien worlds but with the same power. There could even be a colony somewhere filled with them. I'd love if they worked that into the story some day.

Apart from the Richard Donner movies and Superman the animated series where Jor-El was a quiet and peaceful scientist, most verisons of him in his AI form especially in Smallville made him this cold, emotionless figure who was always harsh towards his son and would constantly "punish" him. I like this version that they did for Man of Steel where there was a balance to his character, he was a kind and quiet man with a heart of a warrior who would do absolutely anything to protect the people he cares about. Russell Crowe delivered a fantastic performance and nailed it perfectly. His portrayal of Jor-El was superb and really came across as a true father figure who only wanted what was best for his son.

Why is the general attacking the rulers when the planet is self destructing all around him?
