A somewhat short video essay regarding Clash Royale's descent into monetisation madness, seasoned with questionable facts considering most of this video was constructed using passionate memory and nothing else!
Sorry that I couldn't really find any good background footage except for the Clash animations, I was going to record myself playing Clash Royale then I realised how aspect ratios work and settled on this. I am also aware of how much of a hot take this entire video is, especially for someone who doesn't play Clash Royale too frequently LOL
As someone who primarily talks about movies, it's doubly funny that this situation drew my keen eye, especially when I hadn't touched the game for two years before making this video; just goes to show how unhealthy of a state this game is in right now and I hope with outcry from all kinds of creators, that will change!

Honestly what was most frustrating about cw2 was that we waited over a year with minimal communication from supercell. It’s strange how supercell went from being slow from updates in order to “ensure quality” to pumping out as many bad updates as quickly as possible.

@@NaidvarRambles i think the main problem is that as their player-base shrinks, they add more shitty monetization updates in an attempt to squeeze more money out of each individual player, to maintain the profits they were making before. that results in more people leaving, which makes them squeeze harder, which makes more people leave, and it becomes a feedback loop that continues until the game dies. breaking out of that loop would require them to give up on trying to reach their former profits, which is why they're so hesitant to do it, but in the long run it would be best for them. of course, shareholders don't feel the same way, as if the company doesn't continually increase profits the shareholders don't earn anything, so they pressure tencent (supercells parent company) into continuing the feedback loop, destroying the game in favour of short-term profits. supercell themselves are not a traded company, but tencent is, so i have to assume this loops back around to tencent trying to keep its shareholders happy.

idk in my opinion im really happy that the game is finally dying. these fuckers cant keep getting away with this blatant monetization anymore. it took me a year and a half of averaging 19 games a day to reach full lvl 13 max deck, only for them to introduce lvl 14 half a year later, also baiting everyone to spend all their gold beforehand just so that people are forced to spend more money, and also ensuring that the update drops 5 days before he season ends because they understand that people push for their trophy max at the end of the season which is why i was 2 games away from hitting 7k for the first time ever (which never happened afterwards), which i imagine was the case for many othe people. then after another half a year i was finally able to max that deck out, but still champions are a thing, and not having one simply makes you automatically lose games, because the cards themselves are broken but the enemy also gets faster cycle, its just insane how update after update they destroy the game more and more, its just funny at this point how much they are forcing the game into a direction where the only viable cards are the toxic noob friendly onces, and the only way to really play the game is to spend literal hundreds of dollars, and im not sure what the devs are smoking, but there is a lot more you can do with that kind of money than spend it on a meaningless game.

@firestar0724 i mean im not salty im just angry. the game i used to play every day for at least 1-2 hours kept geting worse each update for no other reason but forcing p2w and bots to be as good as possible. i dont know why people overlook how much tanks and braindead decks have been forced into the meta, its insane. the balance changes is what made all of my ~10ish friends that played the game quit, and i stuck around for a little while playing here and there, but the game hasnt been the same since ~may 2020 i believe , and especially after the release of champions and level 14.

Something that really bothers me is how they handled Masteries. It was an awesome concept, but it already feels like they abandoned the idea with how only a few cards have had their third task added. And then they even nerfed the rewards, pretending that they were listening to the community and doing us a favour by replacing gems, a valuable resource that is difficult to get f2p, with gold, which you can already get anywhere.

I dont like it they are totalt overpowered. IMO they should have ablities like legends. Have dark elixir that you get either by time or by normal elixir spent then you could use that for cards for a special attack either once or something.

I was one of the lucky people to play this game from 2016 onwards... It was so simple, enjoyable, and most importantly, there was no greed for money from the devs. Legendaries felt legendaries, Epics felt epic, even getting rares was kinda good.... But now even legendaries are the same as commons. And there were no shards to upgrade. You had to actually get the specific card from chests (complete luck), which made the game exciting. RIP 2016 Clash Royale. Who else remembers that we could always get a guaranteed epic (prince, skeleton army, goblin barrel) in arena 1? And also the free double wooden chests everyday

As someone who has played since day on and a trophy record of about 7.2k, it's sad to see this game fall down so much. It is literally pure P2W and Supercell saying ''people like upgrading their cards'' is the most annoying thing ever. It's not that we like to upgrade them, it's the fact that you can basically not win if you're underleveled, which lvl 15 just made worse. It is obvious they don't play their own game, at least not enough to understand anything. It seriously pisses me off that they are this greedy and only want money. The card evolutions aren't the problem... It's the fact that supercell doesn't give a single shit about f2p players. They made it so all our progress is now only one third of the way there and basically putting a paywall in front of elite cards. You basically can't win against someone with elite cards, even though the person with elite cards is 99% of the time a worse player with less skill but p2w and if you can pay your way through a whole competitive game against other players, something is seriously wrong. I deleted the game when the update came out (without downloading it) and I am not playing it again until supercell makes the credit card not the best card in the game. I'm serious, i will even never play the game again, if that's what it takes.

And I do agree that Supercell saying that "upgrading your cards is fun" - WITH WHAT GOLD? WITH WHAT MOTIVATION? Who wants to grind out this game endlessly by completing meaningless challenges if it gets you absolutely nowhere? It's insane how worse players can just *win* by taking advantage of their large wallets or even their parent's wallets just to feel better about themselves and to progress forward... I felt the same. Revert everything back to before clanwars 2 & daily task. Everything fell apart since then. Monthly balance change and new card release is what keeps the meta in check, extending the progress and keeping the game fresh and enjoyable. They've killed that with 3mth balance, no new cards except broken ones and creating another problem. Lv ceiling arriving sooner and people leaving mid way because of stale meta and max player bullying. They tried to fix that with trade tokens. -which further makes it worse cuz player with max cards gets more gold to actually upgrade the card and more people reaches all max which sc had to introduce lv14 rendering a vicious cycle. -magic items Same problem. -Starpoints Lmao -scamroyale -50% Slashroyale 1 was not even funny anymore At that point, they've tried to get ppl back with major updates like champions. That broke the game mechanics like card cycles which drives more ppl away once the excitement was over their heads. Now evolution. Imagine defending the evo rg. Swarm cards' out of question building can't hold it down with 3998hp(thats golem lv hp) u try mini pekka for example and for sure gets predicted with a fisherman becuz u have no other options to defend it like u would used to. U can distract the pull with skeley or anything cuz the rg clears them. On top of that, every other rg is an evo. Now put it in a 3 card cycle. And maybe they are lv15 as well. Skill would be out the window and u won't even recognize the game anymore. The road to end game of lv13 was slow but steady which is great but they've turned to the worst stating lv16 is already in consideration. I have no problem with adding lvs but its the way they implement it without thinking ahead how its gonna go down. They've set themselves up to an inevitable path of failing at this direction. The data isn't the fault and it doesn't lie. It's the peron reading it dictating its dead.

It feels like as time went on, they got increasingly lazy whilst just wishing to print money, sort of reminds me of Minecraft after it was acquired by Microsoft in some sad way. Don't get me wrong, Supercell in of itself is quite a respectable company and pretty much every mobile game and even free-to-play game developer needs to make money, thus the enticement of these systems; but Clash Royale went from receiving updates monthly and having much community and developer transparency to having none of that, barely any updates; a massive absence before they decided to just turn around and deliver arguably 2-3 really *scummy* updates in a row that's pushed people beyond their breaking point. Great explanation and summary which adds to the video! I do agree that after like a good month, give it that, everyone, and I mean everyone, will experience the veil of ignorance fade away and realise how Clash Royale is literally *dying* thanks to these crappy updates; I was first thinking I was being dramatic with my thumbnail and title but the more people have agreed with me, the more it feels like I'm preparing the funeral for this beloved game! The funny part is that I've never played the game but recently happened to get into watching videos about the history of the game and thought "Hey, this does look pretty cool". And the thing that prevented me from actually starting it is that in the same group of videos, I learned that the game recently fell off a cliff and I should have considered starting earlier. I started playing Clash Royale years ago, actually had a clan way back in high school with a bunch of my classmates and we played it near daily in between classes. I think the best example of how Supercell is managing the game is the Rage Spell. You get new cards by opening chests you earn by battling. The cards you can get are determined by the arena level you're at. The Rage Spell, when I got it, was at the second Arena Level. Around the time I picked the game up again a few years ago, it had been moved up beyond the 10th level. Checking on the app as I type this it's now at Level 14. It's not the only card that this has happened to, either. Every time I look through the Arena list, it seems like certain cards move up ever higher. They used to be spread around thematically, so ice stuff was unlocked at the ice themed arena, machinery was unlocked at the mechanical themed arena, etc. They gave up on that a while ago, however, and stuff is always moving more and more out of reach of new players.

You've taken every single word out of my mouth regarding my own experience with Clash Royale. CWII and Pass Royale took me out of a game that I played RELIGIOUSLY since Day 1. Watching it get flushed down the toilet is heartbreaking to watch. This is why I'm glad the Brawl Stars team is so good with their community. Their most recent updates made getting brawler unlocks, gadgets and star powers, and brawler skins much easier to get for free to play players.

What for me makes no sense for the clan war 2.0 system is that if you want to actually get the most ressources from the clan war 2.0 system you *have to* have *at least* 4 completely maxed deck *BUT* when you have 4 completely maxed decks you don't really need the clan war 2.0 rewards because at that point your really close to get maxed so clan war 2.0 was created for players that don't need it '_'

Me and my friends did an experiment on Clan wars, both of us using log bait with level 11 units and our trophy level is around 4000-5000. guess what, we are matched with level 14s every day lol. not even a single level 12 or even 13 player

Can't believe I'm saying this, but, as a newer player who started like a year ago, I wish I could play older Clash Royale with things like Clan Wars 1.0 and no more Champions and Evolutions and crap like that. The recent updates just seem like a shameless attempt at cash grabbing as much money as possible from the players (especially with level 15 and $100 evolution shards). It's sad to see it turn into a pay-to-win game.

I just recently started playing again after like a 2-year hiatus, and I almost immediately uninstalled the game. Not because I was losing matches or anything, but because my deck is now so incredibly outdated, I have no footing like I used to at all. I don't have the time to try to learn new strategies, or to grind and level up cards just to be on a playable field. This game is no longer for a casual audience, and that's why clash royale about to die.

The only updates I like is the one that brought the monk into the game because I just like my walking talking Uno reverse card and just watch as people just do them selves in. And the update for losers where even if I do lose, I still walk away with crowns and stuff because I’m a loser, and I constantly lose against people that can either beat me within a few seconds, or their deck is specifically made to counter mine so that I stay in my loser corner.

I started playing CR in November 2016 after hearing a couple friends downloaded the game. I was a freshman in HS then and it was lots of fun playing with ppl from my school and some from other schools nearby and with ppl local, nationwide, global etc. not to mention Friendly Battles as well as the beloved Clan Chest, I miss it so much to this day! And while I don’t play as much as I used to (taking several months “break”) I just play it a day or two and don’t touch it until many months have passed if I feel bored or curious to see what’s new/changed. I’ve bought from the Shop a bit before but never a Pass Royale, I was tempted to but if it has little value for my hard earned $ then no. It truly is sad to see the state of CR, hopefully it can recover soon.

I did a bit of research obviously to make sure my points were correct but a good majority of this was made based on passionate memory and slight outrage that this game had taken such a sadistic turn considering Brawl Stars is actually starting to reward F2P players kindly and Clash of Clans is relatively balanced in that department; it was more or less astounding to see what they were doing with Clash Royale as opposed to the other two games, which I'll probably make videos about to subtly compare their management whilst putting in actual research!

I didn't mind paying 5 bucks a month to play the game and actually max some cards, but ever since the pass change, I have refused to spend any money on the game. It goes much deeper than simpler raises costs too. I will not spend any money on the game until it is fixed, and now that II don't even have any maxed decks anymore, playing feels bad and I probably won't play much at all. I'm keeping my eyes out for a new clash royale replacement.

All of the new developments still aren't worse than the fundamental problem with CR: the main game mode is based on levels and card levels are blatantly unfair. Just one level lower or higher can dramatically change gameplay, zaps killing princesses or minions, towers not two-shotting goblins, extra hits from many cards. At two levels logs don't kill princesses or dart goblins, and so on. Therefore the main gamemode is totally geared towards P2W, completely sacrificing fairness and genuine competitiveness. Not to mention it forces people to play only one or two decks and ruins diversity. Just with that alone, when most of the game is so blatantly geared towards screwing you over, the game is doomed to die eventually. I quit long before evolutions, level 14 or 15 because it was hellish then and it's only becoming ever more terrible.

I played Clash mini and you shouldn't worry about money-cell Clash mini devs told us (the players) that they're against P2W strategy's so everything you pay for is purely cosmetic and doesn't impact gameplay(maybe other than nerves because of some toxic emotes) and it shows you should look up some gameplay, It's actually pretty fun!

Honestly I don't think the game will be easy to fix at this point, it isn't just reverting all the changes they made since whales already spent thousands just to max their cards, reverting it back would be detrimental to them as all their money spent will be down the drain. They might have been able to fix it if they just make multiple small changes back overtime, like rebuffing the pass, buffing the ways we can earn elite wild cards (not exactly the conversion rate IMO, but just the amount we can gain overtime), buffing the season shop and so on, but instead they already took it further by nerfing all those things. I'm convinced that their incentives are just maximising short term profits over retaining long term gains, since it is made really clear with all the monetisation they made with game, it is obvious enough that all these changes would have made f2ps and even low spenders lose interest in the game, but in return they will earn tons of revenue from whales. By doing so more players overall might lose interest overtime and it might lead the game to eventual death. Though I only hope the game will eventually decline to that point, I do also forsee a future where newer generation of people are being lured into the game with all the high effort ads, and have no idea about the game's crappy relationship with players from the past, causing the company to have an overall net profit while they get away with all these bullshit monetisations unfortunately

idk if anyone has noticed this but they’ve basically given up on giving players trade tokens. in the last few months there have been 0 possible ways to get trade tokens f2p and they haven’t even been on the pass royale the past couple months. the only way to get them now is by straight up buying an offer from the shop which is just ridiculous. they’re giving up on a feature basically except for the people who drop bread on the game.
