That is fascinating. This is the first time I have heard a 66 start up and you can really hear the country it was built in. If I had my eyes shut and had no idea what I was listening to, I could just tell this was a loco built in North America. Very nice noise, although my favourite is still an English Electric start up. ;)

The class 66 is practically a rip off version of the 201 class here in Ireland. It features all the same function, engine, motor, chassis only the body work was changed. Some say it's the opposite way round but the class 201 is older than the 66. The only difference is that the 66's body work is different and it is slightly longer (12cm)

If you take the Class 66 and adapt it to American service - increase the weight and horsepower, change the carbody to a hood, remove one of the cabs - you essentially end up with an SD70, of which thousands of variations were built.

Why is the idling rpm suddenly increased at 2:01 ?
@nounoufriend
@nounoufriend 6 жыл бұрын
It can be either cold engine to warm it or when driver switched iso switch then loco will increase rpm to build air pressure faster . They also rev because of generator load
@brianburns7211
@brianburns7211 5 жыл бұрын
nounoufriend Exactly! The EM2000 computer will change the RPM for many of those reasons. On older locomotives, they had to manually throttled up to charge air. These will do so automatically if main reservoir air pressure is too low. They also increase speed to increase coolant temperature, but also sometimes to cool down. I guess the logic is to circulate more water through the radiator.
