#12string. #12-string. #12stringguitar. #12stringguitarsongs
Here are 20 Classic 12-String Songs of the 1960s. The 60s were, without a doubt, the decade that made the 12-string famous. From it's humble beginnings in traditional Mexican and American folk music, the 12-string exploded into the spotlight and became the guitar of choice for the Beatles, the Byrds, the Seekers, the Animals, the Hollies, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, and more. By the time the decade was over, at least 15 songs that featured the 12-string went all the way to #1.
00:00 - Intro
00:07 - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood / The Animals
00:15 - As Tears Go By / The Rolling Stones
00:24 - Hazy Shade of Winter / Simon and Garfunkel

00:46 - Living Loving Maid / Led Zeppelin

Hey Edward. I'll tell you what. If I knew the 90s were going to be Rock n Roll's last gasp, I would have gone to more concerts and appreciated the bands at the time more. I love the Counting Crows but I wasn't into Matchbox 20, The Verve, Tonic, Collective Soul (they're from Atlanta so they're played non stop around here) or the Black Crowes. Now I would take ANY of those bands. That being said, you're right. The bands of the 60s (and 70s) can't be touched. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. Hey Dennis. True story. In my late 20 and early 30s I toured the country playing in a moderately successful NY based band for several years. I started playing at age 12. In 2005, personal problems caused me to put the guitar down for about 7 years. In 2013, I realized how mediocre I was. I think writing a handful of catchy songs allowed me to hide my limited abilities. I decided to kind of start over. I started following the advice I had given my students for years: play slowly, deliberately, accurately, and in time. What do you know, in 4 short years I was pretty good. In 2017, I started seriously focusing on fingerstyle (nobody even knows that I'm a fingerstyle guitarist since I've never played fingerstyle in any of my 200 videos). 5 years and a very consistent practice schedule later and I'm actually pretty good at the darn thing. You can be too. Never too old to start, never too old to reinvent your playing. The time is the easy part: two hours a week max (20-30 minutes, 4 or 5 days a week). The discipline and desire, that's the hard part. I have several videos on how to practice properly. And don't worry, they are just standalone videos. No sales pitch. I don't sell anything. Anyway, Thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. Mark

Hey Tom. One of my students has the same name! Funny story about HB. Thomann reached out to me about a year and a half ago. At the time, one of my videos was spiking and I was averaging about 5k views a day. They offered to send me "a few guitars" to try out. I replied with the guitars I thought would be best for both parties (I believe it was two of their newer jumbo 12s and one of their fusion guitars). A few days later, the video had finished spiking and I dropped back down to what was my average at the time (about 1200 a day). They ghosted me. About 6 months later I sent them an email with about 12 emails copied into the body from channel watchers telling me how they bought a HB because they saw it on my channel. No reply. They could have just said, we aren't interested anymore. It didn't stop me from buying three more guitars from them but it was a pretty crappy thing to do. Shoot me an email and let me know which one you got if you have time. markaranalli@gmail.com. Replies to a thread always get lost as YT doesn't give alerts to replies, only initial comments. Anyway, sorry for the mini novel. Thanks for checking out the video. I appreciate your time and comment. Take care. Mark

Loved it Mark. Super job on all of those songs. For me, the 60s was the era of the 12 string. As a Rickenbacker fan I love that 12 string. I have one, a 330-12FG but the one you’re using looks nicer.
@8MinuteAxe
@8MinuteAxe Жыл бұрын
I've been looking for a reasonable deal on a 330-12. I'm not a huge Ric fan and it would be solely to use in channel videos so I would need to find one for less than $1500. Even that's a lot to spend for something so specific. I love my Reverend. There are some guys a generation (or half a gen) before me that seem to milk a lot more out of the Ric than I ever got. The one I have was a long term loaner. It recently got sold from one of my students to another. Maybe I should just go all in and get a vintage 60s model and write it off. :o. Mark

Hey James. I hope you had a nice holiday. I'll tell you, the reverend may be my favorite guitar. I mean of ANY guitar I've ever played. Not only is it the easiest 12 string to play but there's no other guitar I've ever encountered that gives you more control of your tone by switching pickups and turning knobs. I know that doesn't sound very scientific but my approach to tone is pretty much whatever sounds good at the moment. I hope you have a great week. I can't really get into it yet. Have you tried playing wreck of the edmund fitz yet? That would be my first. Let me know. Thanks for checking out the video and always supporting. Mark

@@8MinuteAxe I have to say the lap steel is really nice. I’ve purchased two items from Harley Benton and the fit and Finnish are always very good. I’m still getting used to the finger picks and alternate tunings. Hopefully I’ll get the hang of it soon. Happy New Year to you and yours. Tony

I was enjoying your comment until you used the word "sibilance". It immediately reminded me that I told myself I was going to improve the audio in my videos this year...and didn't (I recently got the Apollo and used it for the first time on a few tracks in the new video so the music audio has gotten better and better, but the talking head part is still not very good. Party on Wayne.

Love this video! Great songs and actually quite a visual learning tool for myself. As a Songwriter, I look for creative ways to improve my music. Lately I’m honing my skills on the 12 string acoustic and loving it. By the way, I really love that Rickenbacker! Nice axes you get to play with. Thanks for sharing this!!

Loved it Mark ! Hey is it just me or does the Taylor 12 sound better than their 6 strings ? Taylor makes all their guitars to the same spec. depending on style. Example, all their Cutaways are made Identical no matter the model, same with the full bodies, etc. Due to CNC and Computer robots etc. for mass production. The only difference is the woods, finishes and inlays chosen. Which is where the price ranges come from. However, the woods usually are much the same, but in a different placement order. However their 12 is on it's own if you will ! The specs have been Changed to accommodate the 12 strings, which changed everything. I think it sounds much better than any of their 6 strings. But that's just me maybe. Hope you had a Great Christmas Mark and have a Great New Years !!

Hey Jeff. Heck yeah. If it I take the slide to anything other than an open tuning it sounds like a train wreck. LOL. It's in open G. From low to high. DGDGBD. I started playing guitar in 63, and noticed the trend towards 12 strings....... I know Walk Right In was the first but it was folk for sure. Is that the song that inspired George to play 12 string?

Great screen name! I used the Harley Benton RB-612 (about $230US). Eastwood Classic 12 ($600US) Reverend Airwave12 ($1300US) and Rickenbacker 360/12c63 ($3800). I highly recommend the first three. The Rick is a long term loan. I'm not a huge fan. They sound great but not $3000 great to me. There are some old timers that really know how to get the most out of them. I'm not one of them. LOL. Thanks so much for checking out the video. I appreciate your time. Take care. Mark

I've been trying to figure out who was the first to play 12 string on a pop record after Walk Right In which is pure folk. I'm thinking it might have been the intro to "Then He Kissed Me" by the Crystals played by ?? Carol Kaye??.........

Hey Ovalvox. You certainly know your 12 string songs. I've done both of them in various videos over the past couple of years. I just took a random sampling of songs. I cut out about 12 Beatles songs, Kicks, Space Oddity, Thank You, and many more. I was in a rush to get it done and I probably should have represented the big guys a bit more. Sounds like you're a Stones fan. Last year a viewer asked me to do Wild Horses. I convinced him to do it with me. He rose to the occasion. Mike used a 12 string to play Pleasant Valley Sunday live on just about every tour. John plays a 12 on both the original recording of Dreamin AND live. I guess your mother never told you you thar nobody likes a know it all. Even worse when you're wrong.

@@8MinuteAxe Yes Nesmith played a Gretsch electric 12-string guitar on stage but he played a Les Paul on the "Pleasant Valley Sunday" recording. On "California Dreamin'" there is no 12-string on the recording. John Phillips double tracked the intro on a Martin D-28. On the Beach Boys version in the '80s there is a 12-string electric. You are the one who is wrong so please don't try to make me out to be wrong on this.
