1970s adverts are so freaky to watch - the scratches on the film (which I assume looked like that back then) and anything else that even looked freaky in the 1980s. At least The Sun adverts were on videotape - only the contents of the paper were freaky. 0:33 I doubt that they dressed like that when on Radio 1 - I am not even going to mention the crinkly bottom prior to ironing. 1:08 Peter Wheeler, skiving off Crown Court (just like schoolkids did when it was on), to do the voiceover. Whatever happened to those sort of exercise things - were they banned because someone could have strangled themselves doing a cat's cradle with the string or something? 2:30 I thought he said Batman rather than Vatman. 2:47 Tommy Vance voicing the Williams advert. 3:12 The film "Aloha, Bobby and Rose" although made in 1975, was in the British cinemas in around March 1976 according to The Times, which I assume was when the advert was on television. The first showing on television was on Channel 4 on 21st September 1984, with S4C showing it on the 30th. I have been racking my brains trying to pinpoint the familiar music played at the start of the advert - it is of course, Elton John with Bennie and the Jets, which interestingly didn't enter the British charts until September 1976. When put in a 1970s advert, it makes it even more intriguing to listen to, where it didn't before. Rather strangely, the Cleopatra Jones film mentioned in the advert was not even shown on British television until 1997 when one of the Sky Movie channels had shown it. 8:38 This is what I mean by a 1970s advert looking and soundiing freaky - the first two seconds of the advert is silent, and then all of a sudden you hear that "Bring out the Branston" or "We are the champions" jingle, which almost freaks you out if the volume is turned up a bit. The same at the end of a lot of 1970s adverts where you can still hear the action going on after the visuals have stopped on screen. 9:23 I am surprised that Woolworths continued for as long as they did - I would have thought that with adverts like that, they probably wouldn't have made it to the end of the 1970s.
