I love the philosophical segments, Pete. Just so you know. I studied mechanical engineering, wanted to be a mathematician only they don't get paid well. But philosophy is my true love I think. Philosophy of Science was possibly my favorite class of all. I always knew what science was, but I had no knowledge as to 'why' science was the way it was. Descartes was a wonderful bit to read about and I agree with you that he meant (in our speak) "I experience, therefore I am".

My septum was deviated in both directions and a few other things. I had surgery. I recommend it. It wasn't a difficult recovery and I can breath through my nose now. I still have sleep apnea though.

Your point about democracy and choice is interesting. I also support democracy as a concept, but I believe democracy has been expanded too much over the past 100 or so years. It's generally good that women and minorities can legally vote, but we should recognize that rights without responsibilities are irresponsible. Education has become far more accessible, but the average person is still mostly uninformed on politics, functions of the government, and the ideals our countries were founded upon. The less educated people are, the more prone they are to propaganda. If people uncritically believe whatever the media tells them, can we really say they are making a choice? I say no. This form of unchecked democracy gives more power to large institutions that influence the citizenry and takes power away from the educated voters. In order to vote, you should first have to pass a test about government and history, just as people have to pass a test about traffic laws before getting their drivers license.

Like anything else it would be as good as we design it. The current design is rich people pretend to give us a choice between two options that are not willing to discuss updating the system so we stay in status quo. So we have a one-party system, the status-quo party. The questions I ask are: What would an alternative to that look like? What would the first step to experimenting with an alternative be?
