"You may notice that the Sega version of Exerion is exactly the same as this" Fun fact: The Sega SG-1000, the MSX1 and the Colecovision have almost identical hardware! In fact, other than the soundchips (which are very similar btw), and the upgradable RAM on the MSX, their hardware is virtually identical!

+Ruko Michiharu Yes they all use the Texas Instruments TMS 9918A. Also the Mark III/Master System used an enhanced version of the 9918A that could use more memory and had additional graphics modes. And the Genesis further expanded on this with a 16-bit version of the Master System's graphics chip with even more graphics modes added and all of the graphics modes from the original 9918A removed . The Power Base Convertor for the Genesis was just an adapter for the cartridge port, the Genesis hardware was capable of directly running Master System games. In this mode the Z-80 was used to run the game. This is also why the Genesis had a second "sound" CPU (the Z-80) and a PSU sound chip in addition to the FM chip.

OK, I played this game lots when I was a teenager...but I never knew about the machine gun! We had loads of fun flying upwards moving just in front of the enemies and then hitting that fire button like a madman! That rocked :)

Exerion is one of my all time fave old-school shmups.Never seen the MSX version before. A decent port, although it can't beat the smooth scrolling of the arcade original.

+Lord Karnage Mark, does your Intergalactic Space Arcade ever run into any female space rangers? It's crossed my mind a couple times, you seem like you'd have had a few run-ins, perhaps even one who decided to stick around the space arcade for awhile... call it an "inspection".

MSX 1 lacks scroll capacity because MSX 2 got it all for itself.

Actually it does but its a bit messy: problemkaputt.de/portar.htm#vdpregisters00h07hbasicmsx1msx2videoregisters MSX 2 do "perfect" vertical scrolling by messing with register 17h, and can do horizontal scrolling as well, but it gets a bit weird because you're actually messing with the screen position register 12h, and this causes the left and right borders to keep "popping", like happens with space manbow and any MSX 2 game that does that, but well, it is hardware scrolling and don't fry the hell out of the poor Z80 CPU. Dr_Kachu san That's interesting... I didn't know that... But this sounds like it's different from the type of hardware scrolling we're used to from the NES or the MSX for example...

It is very different from the NES on the part where you don't have screen wrapping and a "four screen" setup. The NES kinda does a 512x480 "virtual screen" that you can scroll around, which with some trickery allows you to just change the edge tiles as you scroll around, saving quite a lot of CPU time. When doing scrolling on the MSX 2,you have to change the WHOLE tile map every 8 steps, when using tiles of course. There are some modes that use pixels instead, and on those you can only realistically scroll vertically.

I am color blind and that scrolling background does not allow me to see ANYTHING. just random moving colors on the screen. I can not even see where the plane is half the time.
