Just completed this both sides, funnily enough I had multi layer repairs at the bottom of both flitch panels. Some good progress on the Clubby👍

James Barrie Awesome sounds good man. Yeah definitely seems like a common place for people to stick bodged repairs there but easy enough to sort

I did the same job on my car, I tech screwed the new panel on top of the old one a cut them both, where necessary, at the same time with an air hacksaw. Gave me a perfect line with 1mm gap for welding.
@SimpsonsClassics4 жыл бұрын
Stewart Palmer Yeah definitely screwing in the panels before welding is a lot easier for sure is neat and keeps things in place. And yes then making a cut is so much easier 👍

It’s very easy to spend lots of money on a mini restore. Very hard sticking to a budget, but a little contingency for the unexpected can help that. Paint preparation seems to always take far longer than expected but saves loads of money when you send it for the final paint finish.
@SimpsonsClassics4 жыл бұрын
andrew hall Yes I completely understand what your saying I think the paint prep will take a while for sure just can’t wait to see it solid again aha. Thanks for watching

Not sure if you found out what the little square patch was that looks like a small plate should be there but I found out it is ment to be a front end number and I was told it is normally on the inner wing or in the front foot well either passenger side or driver's side but is most of the time if it is in the foot well it is normally in passenger side and would you recommend replacing the front floor plans first or the toe bored first?
@SimpsonsClassics2 жыл бұрын
It think it’s was a matching number to the front one. I would advise leaving the floors in place and doing the toe board first and bracing the car up before any cutting.
@186scott2 жыл бұрын
@@SimpsonsClassics I was thinking what would be easier and in have made all the bracing just have to weld the bracing in and is it in possible to remove the toe board without removing the front subframe so the front subframe can be used to line up the new toe board and hold it in place aswell
@SimpsonsClassics2 жыл бұрын
@@186scott yes I can see that working really well buddy. All the best that way you can line the new panel up with the subframe then
@IronmanG744 жыл бұрын
where is that panel from. mine doesn't have the crossmember overlap part
@SimpsonsClassics4 жыл бұрын
Graham Boyle these were bought off someone who was selling up. I think they are magnum panels but have no sticker on them.
@ClassicCarCave4 жыл бұрын
Marc, The magnum panels seem a better profile fit on top of an original panel rather than replacing the panel, Some of the old magnum panels where a push & hammer in over the top of holes just to cover them up. For example the door step repair panel is a perfect fit over the original one. Cheers Dave

Surely its better to cut out the shit and put a fresh panel in
@ClassicCarCave3 жыл бұрын
Chris, That‘s correct it‘s the only way to do the job right! I was just trying to point out to Marc that magnum panels where originally designed to plop over the top of an original panels and that‘s why there profiles are so bad, M Machine and Heritage make far better but people buy Magnum as there the cheapest. To me cutting all the grot & rust out is a must. Cheers Dave

@@ClassicCarCave I didn't know that surely they wouldn't have different press tools made like that
@ClassicCarCave3 жыл бұрын
Chris, Not now but in the 70s and early 80s they where a perfect fit on top of a panel, You have to remember even MK1 minis we being bought for peanuts as nobody wanted them hard to believe i know! Must people then just wanted an MOT cert and then scrapped the car. I hope you will take a look at the minis i have built and let me know what you think ? Cheers Dave

You did right removing that repair off the "flitch panel", that was a complete mess, makes you think how many cars there are out there that are MOT'd with repairs like that, makes the blood run cold.

A bit of an advise for next time u need to remove that kind of sound deadning crap from the floor use dry ice it will flash freeze it and it will come of real easy
