Keith, great video and incite to coversills. Dave Jag and myself spoke at great length about the old coversills when I was in Austria and you can see how much damage they cause in my older videos. My drivers side step and A post were completely rotted out. I replaced the sill on the drivers side about 6 years ago and I took off 2 cover sills and the original hence why I've had to completely renew that corner of the car. Sean

Keith, Great video & info, I think the saving grace has been the wax oil without a doubt! Cutting them down and having all the flutes open will make a big difference to moisture content in the car. Looking forward to meeting you both. Cheers Dave.

If it was sealed how would moisture get in

They are not completely sealed, you get small gaps and tiny where the air inside equalizes with the ambient air then when the the temperature changes the air in the sill reaches dew point and condensation forms on the cold metal and water collects in the sill. If the sills are open fully to atmosphere the condensation occurs at a much slower rate

I always have a moisture abosorber (aero 360) in my car and 3 more my garage work bench. If no moisture abosorber then keep the window open slightly to promote air flow.

Good advice that. I recently bought some of the big moisture absorbing bags for caravans and Motorhomes that I keep in the rear door bins of both Minis. It seems to work a treat and can only be a good thing :)

As you've got power then get a dehumidifier and leave window open a bit is what I've heard its the best way to reduce moisture outside a carcoon

If you've had the car for 12 years with no problems with rust why would you cut them off just to look and see surly it would have been better to have looked under the carpets and kept the underside of the car stone chipped in other words if it isn't broken why fix it. It was fine for 12 years Rob

Hi Rob, it was not an easy decision to make to cut them off but it is the right thing to do because it's a very well know water trap and it's not just as simple as lifting the carpets to have a look, you literally need to remove them to get a decent look inside. I will explain more in next weeks update. It also adds value to the car and makes it easier to sell as people in the know avoid oversills like the plague.

One of my minis has oversills, but the original were removed first (done by others) it is a good job and no rust problems. I vented the new inner sill to allow air flow and access for waxoil etc.
