Here it is, the new project Mini. Found on E-bay but I lost the auction only to later find the higher bidder messed the seller around so it was offered to the next highest bidder...... Me. The Mini is a 1997 Rover Cooper MPI and has been off the road in a garage since 2007! It's what some might call a barn find.
In this update the legend that is Alex Toon replaces the airbag steering wheel in Project Sprout my 1997 MPI Mini Cooper

So funny, Alex must be a brother from another mother 😆 On a serious note when you disconnect the battery, put a multimeter between the two battery posts and note what voltage is going to earth, you will be surprised. Also at the same time put a amp clamp around the multimeter wire and see what amperage is going through!!. There are capacitors in ecu's that need to drain down. Rover said, when airbags came out they had a service life of 10 years (I think if my memory serves me) What diagnostics do you use Keith for doing key fobs etc?

Yes, the airbags are meant to be replaced at 10 years from memory. Modern cars can take a long to to completely power down even with the battery disconnected (30 mins or so), like you say, there are quite a few capacitors that take time to discharge. I don't really use diagnostics, I've plugged in a couple of times just to check for DTC's but never had the need to recode key fobs etc. I have access to a Bosch KTS590 if I need it

There's obviously all sorts of places who refurb steering wheels, but have a look at RetroMiniRetrim on Facebook if you fancy getting the original cream one refurbed. Elliot's work is really great and plenty of examples on there of MPi steering wheels he's done.

Thanks, yes Elliot's work is amazing. I managed to source a good original steering wheel and I got Elliot to do me a gear knob
