Thank you for the great advice. It was not difficult at all. I only did the back area behind the back seat. I put the roofing material down at the beginning of summer and then did not have time to put the carpet over it until yesterday. No bad smell at all, and that was all the way through a hot New Mexico summer. I plan on finishing the carpet and sound deadening in my 79 Convertible Beetle next year. Thank again.

By the way, New Mexico had a really hot summer with many days over 102 degrees. No smell, nothing running, great sound deadening! Awesome advice.

I've had several Vdubbers make this same recommendation. It's supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread LOL I have a slight water leaking into the cabin issue that needs to be tended to first, then repair/prevent the rust that has come along with it then I am all over this process. Great idea on the home carpet padding as well. Cost effective and as long as you know how to use some shears and can pattern things, you have it made!

New subscriber here! Hey I just wanted to throw out some knowledge on acoustics and vibration. The material your using while ok is not actually a sound dampening/proofing material. The reason it works is because of the materials density…the more dense a material the less “noise” you are going to get from it. Traditional sound dampening materials are expansive because of the material itself and the properties that are afforded it in part due to its density. Dynamat while good is expensive, I used it to sound proof aircraft engine bays that were equipped with Rotax 912 motors (similar in acoustic qualities to a beetle equipped with a 1600 - 1800cc). The two materials I would recommend to dampen on the cheap (cheap in money not on quality) would be Siless 80mm self adhering butyl rubber or Siless 157mm self adhering closed cell foam. The foam will be cheaper and may impede your interior install as it is thicker (foam has to be in order to achieve the same properties of butyl) while the Butyl is super thin and easy to cut, dart, and even shape. To finish it off I recommend using a stainless steel firewall and adhering an aluminized fire barrier material and finishing that off with a butyl sound proofing (stainless won’t burn and the extra firewall material will give the butyl something grab onto without heating up and disbonding).

Great tip. I havent tried this yet my bug is in the process of being painted. I saw someone said the interior of a car,s temp. exceeds that of a roof. NO WAY. If you don't believe me try standing on your roof barefoot in the middle of summer! I looked at the msds sheet on the quick roof website. this material isnt affected by heat until 200 degrees fahrenheit. If your car gets that hot your living on the sun.
@joestl31416 жыл бұрын
Actually the temperature in a car can exceed those found on roof tops. In the summer the interior of your car can reach 140+ degrees. Although this isn't enough to melt some asphalt based deadeners, it is enough to greatly reduce their effectiveness. Butyl deadeners not only can withstand temperatures over 400 degrees they're also twice as effective at all temperatures. Asphalt products are appealing because they are cheaper, but you'll have to use twice as much to get the same effect.

Hi Chris, I asked the manufacturer (Cofair) if there are any differences between Quick Roof and Peel and Seal. Their answer: None except that P&S has a nice pressed honeycomb texture. Same ingredients so the smell should be the same too. These days there a lot of sound deadening materials that are non-toxic. Dont buy the overpriced Dynamat sh!t. Go to your local A/C installer they have it on big rolls.

@joestl31416 жыл бұрын
Products like Quick Roof are asphalt based and their heat tolerance is somewhat low. They're also not as affective as your more expensive butyl based deadeners. The asphalt mat cam also me subject to catastrophic failure where the asphalt will lose it's integrity the the deader will release from the surface. This not only smells HORRIBLE and will RUIN your carpet while making a huge mess. If you want to deaden sound, I recommend secondskin damplifier or raamat.
@67VW8 ай бұрын
Have you used it on a VW with a modified engine?
@cubey2 жыл бұрын
That stuff isn't very thick though, it's just rubber with foil. I have used it to fix big holes on old aluminum and fiberglass RV roofs. Actual sound deadening stuff is 1/4" foam or something to help insulate and deaden sound

Taking into account the high risk you experience with some asphalt deadeners, the more expensive butyl mat starts to look like the better option. Don't get me wrong, I think Dynamat Xtreme is VERY over priced, but products like Second Skins Damplifier give you more value for money than Quick Roof. If Quick Roof does the job for you, that's fine. But I wouldn't bother with it.
