Darren G Thank you for anouther wonderful video. I have come to like your repair and maintenance videos to be at the top of the pack because you always give an explanation of why your are doing a particular job. After 4 decades of British Cars for my hobby I decided to try the ( California market with paperwork provenance ) the 74 Super Beetle that I event tally found here in Canada. I really like your informed work and your accompanying explanations, because to me they are both essential to becoming a good DIY Beetle mechanic. Keep the great videos coming please Chris !

oh man, this brings back memories. Had a 68 and then a 73 Super as my first 2 cars in the late 90s. I was doing almost 3000 miles a month and I was checking the valves every oil change. People said I was nuts for checking the valves so often but that motor ran like a watch.

@classicvwbugs12 жыл бұрын
It gives you the correct intake of oxygen and the exhaust of carbon gases. If these are not handled correctly, the car will not run efficiently, all this has to be right if you want less wear on the motor. The motor will not perform to its max potential, you can kill it if not maintained.

Sounds like a stretched valve stem,not good,only remedy is a strip down of the head,also check for cracks around the valve seat,if valves are not checked every 3000 miles then problems like this will occure,and its a simple thing to do.Good luck with your bug.

Hi Chris, thank you for sharing these videos with us!! I learned so much of your videos and the bug-me-videos. I guess your how-to vids were the spark I needed to restore and take care of my 79 bug. I don't think a weekend goes by without me working on my bug, to the great annoyance of my girlfriend. I don't think she likes you that much, now I think of it.... oh well :-) Anyways, I have a question considering the valve adjustment. In 1 case I just can't change the clearance no mather what I try. I can remove the nut without a problem but the screw-head just doesn't move and seems stuck. I've stopped trying because the screw-head is a bit damaged by now because of using to much force. Any tips to fix this? All the best, Robby from Belgium

Hi, I just bought a 1641cc engine with dual carb, I took it to a shop where they had to rewire and put a regulator on it because I had an alternator before now it has a generator, they told me thatI needed a new generator, so I got a new generator, the Idiot light still stays on when starting the car and the generator is not charging. The belt wiggles a lot when the engine is running. The other thing is, the engine has an aftermarket exhaust its back fires and blows out flames. I had my friend drive the beetle while I follow, and I saw that the exhaust was turning red hot while driving on the freeway when he slows down the exhaust cools down, and every time I pressed in the gas theres a loud tapping sound I thing coming from the exhaust but not sure

Snap On used to make a tool in an S configuration for that. I used to do my 74 Beetle all the time. However, there was a trick of the trade which I cannot remember exactly any more. It was something like. TDC, then you can adjust 1 & 3. Then rotate X degrees (can remember, but the crank turns twice as fast as the cam (360 deg vs. 720 degrees) and you go to 2 & 4 cylinders and adjust those. Almost one stop shopping, but I can't remember the sequence. Maybe someone else can comment.
